I tried to like Eve. I really did try. I have tried it several times over the last few years. I was just not able to get into it.

I have a job, and a wife, so I don't play much more than that. But I have more time so I get to play other games as well. It would suck to only play one game. :)

Geez, that's like 5 reasons in one. Too bad you don't have enough time to try out the RPG's you supposedly write. Also, don't worry, once you have a girlfriend for any length of time you'll realize she really doesn't take up any gaming time. In fact, it might even add a little. Nothing like having a pointless argument and following it up with head shots.

Sigh.

Anyway, I've tried this Eve game twice, and I just can't get into it. I also don't really like the game mechanics very much.

Im not playing it because games are (for me) a combination of two things;

1) Having fun

2) Winning

Neither of these apply to any MMO game ever (MMO combat has always been horrible) and I don't like clickin on the same thing just to watch a bar/number change - not my idea of fun.

I'm guessing EVE is reasonably good, just like WOW is...

I think EVE has a steeper learning curve, perhaps space games aren't as 'immediate' as fantasy swords n sorcery stuff, and from what I hear, if you dont find some decent people to play with in your trial, you're probably not going to sign up.

Of course that's an issue with almost all MMOs, but, I think more so with EVE, its perhaps not as 'newbie friendly' and 'instant fun' as many others.

From what I've heard of it, and yes, I'm talking from a 'never played it, so I have no clue what I'm talking about' perspective, its a more deep and mature game than most MMOs, nearer Civilisation than Gauntlet.

I think essentially EVE is the kinda game a minority will love, rather than WOW which the masses will 'quite like'. I'm in the 'I LOVE WOW' camp myself tho.

Good thing you didn't start playing games a decade or two ago. Games that you can't win, aren't new. Some of them you could get a kill screen if you're amazing, but most people would never get that close. I think it's just your number 1, for me. Having fun. I could care less about winning anything.

Ha ha, she's not really a gamer. I don't count the occasional wii session as gaming (I still have some dignity). I tend to book off a weekend of distractions for the RPGs. We only really get a chance to do this once every 6 months, I actually enjoy the process of the system creation.

Also, that. Winning + fun = good game. There needs to be a better blend of MMO and shooter. Something based around exploration and team work rather than levelling or better weapons. I understand it's one of the things EVE is actually quite good at doing is the in-world community. But economic space sim is not a good start for me!

Oh boy... I know you're trolling for badges, but I'll just have to enjoy this more:

1 - It's a bad "game"... Really bad.
2 - I refuse to pay for a job.
3 - I thoroughly refuse to pay for a bad job.
4 - There's no story, the gameplay can be fully replicated with Microsoft Excel, and if you can draw, which I can, you can even make your own graphics without forking over enough money to feed Africa.
5 - I already have Microsoft Excel, so I can fully replicate the gameplay without paying for it monthly... If I'm ever that desperate though, please shoot me.
6 - The "game" is truly atrocious... If WoW is really bad, EvE takes "bad" 10 steps too far.

...Must I truly go on?

It's brutal. It's cutthroat. It's sophisticated. It's incredibly complex. I love it.

I resent that.

I've really found it interesting to see peoples' opinions on it. I see many people who have played it and say it's not right for them; that's really understandable. It's hard, it's slow, it's complicated, and it's poorly documented. But its difficulty and harsh penalties make everything you earn rewarding.

When I pulled my corp out of a bad alliance last week, it stranded one of our members in null-sec. They lost their ship, and I'm going have the corp pay most of the replacement cost since a corp action was almost entirely to blame for the loss. But the guys in my corp know that as a CEO, fairness to members is my top priority. So they stay. I've had several people stick with the corp for over a year.

Good thing we pulled out. A director in the executor corp of the alliance decided to take over and boot all the corps out of the alliance and take it for himself. That meant any corp that had put up a station in our null-sec area instantly lost any diplomatic ties with other alliances in the region and probably lost their investments.

I just don't see this kind of depth in other MMOs' social structures.

Then there's a few people (like you) who just say out of hand "it's bad."

As the resident EVE addict (5 years and running deep into my 6th) I can accept and agree with those of you who have valid opinions.

Those whos opinions I feel are invalid are those who think it sucks because some 5/6 year old reviews say it does (unfortunatly unlike that other MMO, EVE doesnt get reviewed every major expansion, which is a shame as come Tuesday there will have been nine of them), and those who think it sucks because Yahtzee said so.

Then again those are more of a personal hate about anybody who claims any game sucks because they have heard about it from critics. Seriously, don't people have a free will anymore?

Those of you shouting "shit" at any game without actually playing it, most of these games (MMOs, FPSs, pretty much any genre) have demos so why not grow a thought pattern and explore them on your own?

Please note: This is not me being EVE Fanboy. I am fully aware that EVE is by no means everyones cup of tea and I respect the views of those who have tried it, or other MMOs, and dislike it for what it is.

This is more of a rant about how people tend to devalue a game like they have played it when all they have done is found of out of date information, an in-date review (pointing the game out in a bad light), or (on the Escapist) because a British person who tends to pour cynicism into the games he touches said it was bad.

I feal the same about every game I hear people whining about without having a go, and will happily try any game myself before buying or condemming it (even resorting to torrents if a demo is not available).

Sorry to hijak the thread, but when I read through the first page and saw more than one "becuase yahtzee said its shit" (or along those lines) I just had to vent. As I said, I respect those of you who have valid opinions about any game.

Pre-Edit: Yes this is a bit of a rant and I apologise. Just take it as a rant about how people should make their own minds up about every game rather than a fanboy rant about eve ok? Comon guys you know me well enough to know I have a reason for these things.

It's not that you like EvE, as much as I hate it personally I can understand someone else might like it, although I'll also be temped to think of them as extraordinarily boring people. It's that your thread wasn't so much a "Why I like Eve", but "why don't you like eve? what's wrong with you?" kinda thread.

To further explain why I hate eve, to me, all you stated in your post is boring grunt work. I don't care for political ties, and drama, and all that bullshit. If I did, I'd care more about real life politics which actually matter... I don't join a game to deal with drama, I have enough of that as is.. I join it to play a bit, and as far as gameplay goes, I think Yahtzee put it best when he said "the user interface couldn't possibly be any less intuitive unless your monitor was at the bottom of a fucking well". On top of that, there's no ACTUAL gameplay... It's all played out on a spreadsheet with animations... I'm sorry I find that as enjoyable as sticking needles in my eyes and pumping out the fluid...

I took a brief glimpse at EVE and didn't see anything that appealed to me, so I didn't bother looking further. It's not like there's a shortage of games out there... I can be very picky and still have too many titles in my "to play" stack. (Or my "to buy" list, thanks to the madness of the holiday shopping/release season.)

Found the gameplay to be pretty slow on my first try of the game (trial version), but then again, I heard how players were able to create this wonderful atmosphere by building up mega corps, and even huge alliances, and consequently the resulting wars.

I would say, for a game that 'old' (as in, has been in existence for a while) , trying to fight your way to the top to enjoy it along with the big dogs, would be a hassle, another reason I decided to play WAR instead of starting anew in a different server of WoW.

Edit:grammar and what's not.
