I think that guys get it as well if you claim to be a fan of specific geeky things that have a large hardcore fan base.
Basically this. Any woman who isn't used to this by now probably actually is a poser.

Then again, I acknowledge that the default position in many cases is that "geek" girls are posers and that can be annoying. i.e. you're playing shooter of the week and you make it known that you're a girl so you get harassed or trolled; solution: don't let gender be a part of it, and don't let the trolls troll you about your gender (you really should know better as far as trolls are concerned).

Here's my two cents.

The whole thing goes back to the stereotype that Geeks are unattractive/not as attractive as jocks. Therefore when an attractive girl says she's a geek it seems a little suspect.

This is bullshit I know, I'm actually friends with two attractive geek girls, but that mindset is there for most people.

What you should watch out for is when people say 'OMG, such a nerd.' because if you are a true nerd then you wouldn't have to tell anyone.

If anything geeks accusing someone who is trying to "act popular" of not being a real geek is the opposite of sexism, its holding them to the standards to which they'd hold other guys.

I'll get out the popcorn and a front row seat in this thread.
Someone alert Boudica, MoonlightButterfly and itsthesheppy already and let the games begin.
Opponents shall be found along the way.
And with some luck, someone will say something intended as a humorous post wich gets interpreted as "sexist" by another party.
Or even better, someone says something ACTUALLY sexist and the rock starts rolling.
Ohh boy, nothing like a bit of glee on rainy days like these.

I sure did get my money's worth out of this front row seat.

Ya'know, I've heard people say stuff like this a million times and I still don't understand what it means. I like The Big Bang Theory, what does that say about me? Seriously, noone has ever explained it to me.

I avoid playing games with men. If I do play with them, I do it without any gender identifying attributes. I'm over the online minority. If I'm not with friends, I'm a faceless mute. Have a feminine name? lol you trying to be a gurl? Have a cute avatar? Same. Speak? Sexist slurs, creepy people hitting on you. Do well? Get back in the kitchen. Do poorly? Sexist slurs.

I've given up. A select minority of male gamers have ruined online for me.
A woman? On MY Internet? THIS IS A BOYS ONLY ZONE. DIDN'T YOU READ THE SIGN?

It's popular and it's cool to hate on popular things, don't you know? It's all edgy and shit. Also shows how smart they are--like, they are so above that TV show and stuff.

*rolls eyes*
Well, yeah, you're right about that, but the hatred usually comes from something specific, doesn't it? I mean, people hate Twilight (I've only seen the first movie and thought it was bad, don't know how the others are) because they think it made vampires wimpy, just like they hate Justin Bieber for... well, OK, I don't know why people hate Justin Bieber (even though his "rape happens for a reason" comment was incredibly stupid).

... ya'know, you're right. Maybe people just hate stuff that's popular. I know I've done it more than once.

Well that's shitty. Also weird, always use a female avatar if it's an option, never encountered any of this stuff but then as you say it's a minority.

Wait that's not true, In wow once some dude decided that boring the shit out of me with Nirvana trivia would some how make me interested in him. That character died quickly. So never rolling an elf girl in anything ever again.

I'm pretty sure I've done it myself to girls - of course I think there are such things as girl nerds, and there are plenty of them. But then there are also plenty of high profile types who simply treat it as an affectation. You know the types - camwhores and pornstars, mostly. They just stick a mention of it on a web profile, pose with a console pad, and be done with it.

Sadly, it isn't easy to distinguish between legitimate nerds and "poser" types, so my advice is not to try. Just give them the benefit of the doubt*.

*With the possible exception of Lisa Foiles, who I have yet to be convinced by.

The gaming community has a problem with sexism because a lot of nerds just need to get laid. Seriously sexism crops up when people get lonely or unfulfilled. It goes away when they are happy. It is true for both genders.

Since in a lot of ways nerdy behaviour is seen as an unproductive timesucker and since a lot of nerds have atrocious social skills in general it is an undesirable trait to be a nerd. So a lot of nerds are sexist because they haven't had a lot of action and so they form a little boys club.

But its OK to call bs sometimes. I've had undesirables try to infiltrate my social circle because they had no luck anywhere else. My social circle is nerdy and a lot of the guys don't have a lot of experience. I'll test that undesirable to expose her. Sorry, not all predators are men. But that's the only situation where I think it's OK.

Bronies are the current male equivilent on the internet I'd say. For women, the claim is that they're attention whores and for men, the claim is that they're gay. The insults are a bit different, but the sentiment is the same.

As far as hostile geek circles, I think the best example is the MOBA scene. Doesn't matter what your race, gender, creed, etc is; you step into a game of League of Legends, Heroes of Newerth, or Defense of the Ancients as a new player and just let the hate wash over you.
And yeah LOL is an awesome game full of horrible human beings.

'You haven't seen every episode of Astro Boy? You're not a true otaku.'
I honestly doubt anyone ever said that to you. An "otaku" is someone who has an obsession in which they don't leave their house aside from necessities i.e. buy food, work, etc. They are essentially shut ins. So I doubt yo ever truly met one.
I did say that I had changed the exact words to fit the same format. No they didn't use the word otaku, but they did say I couldn't be a true fan of anime because I hadn't seen Astro Boy.

I've never "quizzed" anybody, that'd be rude but if a cosplayer from the same series as my friend does not recognize her, even though they're part of the same game, then yes, that thing in my mind does light up, I do get the smell of someone being a "poser".

I don't think this needs to be gender-focused. Some may think girls tend to not be into their fandoms and such as much but from my experience as an anime fan there's a pretty good female presence so there's be no reason to question their knowledge based on their sex.

Now, if you actually try and make points and don't know what you're talking about, I can of course correct you about stuff in a polite way, it's not about your sex but more about the truth, I would hope people would be able to tell the difference.

This is all that needs to be said. Male and Female do it. They're not real nerds. Right click view image to see actual size.

I'm sorry, but that's a pack of lies. I grew up loving science, math, movies and video games, I grew up playing Magic The Gathering, D&D and Warhammer. I've read the Lord Of the Rings, Issac Asimov and Arthur C. Clark. I read both Marvel and DC comics. By any logical definition, I fit the term nerd. And guess what, I have two x chromosomes. Women being nerds and geeks is not a derivation of a norm. There's Ada Lovelace, the worlds first programmer, Marie Curie, nobel prize winning physicist, I could go on for hours. A nerd is a type of person, and the term is not defined by sex or gender.
Eh? I don't understand. Are you sure quoted the right person?

EDIT: To clarify, you are responding to a point I didn't make.
I'm responding to your statement that the norm for a nerd is being male, while females are outside the norm.
