Poll: FF7 is so popular because it was a lot of people's first JRPG

I realized this after playing that game for the first time recently. I didn't understand how people could go crazy over these boring characters. All the hype made me expect that the story would be as good as Chrono Trigger, but I was disappointed. There was so much I didn't like that I figured I had to have been there when it was new to experience it truly. Back when there were over 9000 turn taking JRPGs on the playstation 1 ( was was there at the time but I was a Nintenerd), this game was most likely your first JRPG.

So the question of the thread is, is there a classic game you played well after its time, and didn't see what all the hype was about. Things like old sonic, MGS, GTA, whatever. Also to test my theory answer the poll on whether or not FF7 was your first serious JRPG, if you don't want to answer honestly because you don't like generalizations don't bother voting.

EDIT: I guess my theory only applies to those in the 15-19 age range, teens who grew up with the PS1/N64/SNES.

Nope, it wasn't my first FF. Still think it's one of the best, though it hasn't aged that well. The lego graphics I can stand, since the backgrounds are still quite pretty, but the translation is just too horrible these days.

It IS possible. PS1 brough gaming to a new audience and FF7 was the flagship RPG of the platform. Quite a few people might have had their first significant contact with a rich narrative mixed with complex game elements in that very game. That same group would also be unaccustomed to the various gaming and fantasy/scifi tropes, finding the whole experience memorable and fresh.

This is similar to my theory on why Oblivion is so popular despite essentialy being crap...

I think for my generation (20 somethings today) FF2(4) or 3(6) was the first JRPG that they played or even older NES titles. Final Fantasy was already a beloved series when 7 was released and it was the first major RPG release in CD format for a console, so yeah, it was a big deal in the same way that Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time were a big deal.

The games that I don't understand the hype about is the Fallout series. I played the first one a bit and I got Fallout 3 when it was cheap on Steam. Both bored me to death. I get that it's an RPG sandbox whatever and you can create a character as you choose, but I guess I'm not egotistical enough to find that to be very exciting.

By first good JRPG was Grandia.

What a grand time I had. After that, when I played FF7 it just paled in comparison. It's not even in my top 10 JRPGs. It's good, but not nearly as good as people make it out to be.

You need to be egotistical to like freedom?

Secret of Mana(SNES) was my first, but FFVII definitely blew everything of the current generation away with the theatrical cut scenes and everything.

My first was FF4, though my favourite always was FF6 in the series. I didn't leave my console running for a month just to play without saving for FF7 after all.

Hmm, well that debunked my theory. Or maybe I'm not asking the right people, I'll post it in a final fantasy forum or something get more accurate results. But I assumed there would be a lot of FF fanboys here who loved 7 the most.

Well tahts your problem right there you followed the hype without just trying it on your own completely ignoring the hype. Also it is normal to have an opinion idfferent from the seemingly endless masses.

It was not my first JRPG. It was my first FF game. My first JRPG was Mario RPG.
I like FF7 for a lot of reasons. The graphics were great at the time. The score was incredible. The story entertained me because I can relate to Sephiroth's theory of purifying the world by killing all humans. Also, I like turn based combat. I probably doesn't hold up that well now, but few things from over 10 years ago do hold up.

It was essentially my first JRPG i grew up in the SNES age.. But i never a SNES so i never played most of those games til i was older.. I did however own a PS1 tho.. And owned FF7 and 9.. I thought 7 was amazing at first then i learned that there were better titles out there.. And now i see its popularity simply because of the nostalgia effect.. GET OVER IT PEOPLE THE GAME WAS BAD TO MEDIOCRE AT BEST! It is no way the best of the series!! 6 the real or 3 as it was in America was 10x better than FF7 could ever dream of being!

Bah, all you youngins. My first JRPG was Dragon Warrior (or Dragon Quest if your prefer).

But yeah, the general theory that we like the "old school" games because they were the first games we played and thus hold nostalgia for us is fairly relevant.

A lot of games don't age well, especially those which were sold on new technology. One of FFVII big selling points was the graphics, CG scenes and the like had never been seen before this point so it was pretty impressive at the time.

So I like the game and still do, even though it wasn't my first JRPG. Is it due to nostalgia, maybe, but the reason doesn't change the fact that I do still like the game.
