Poll: FF7 is so popular because it was a lot of people's first JRPG

I hate the majority of JRPGs, but FF6 was awesome in my opinion. Wasn't my first JRPG though.

FFVII was not my first good RPG, that title has been taken by Golden Sun. I didn't play FFVII until about four or five years ago. Did I love the game? Fuck yeah, it's great! Is it my favorite JRPG? No, definitely not. Right now that's a toss up between Golden Sun and Tales of Symphonia (sure Tales is an action RPG, but to me it still counts). I'll say this, to me FFVII is a good game, good enough for me to play it through several times. However, although I will never get bored of it, it will never be the best JRPG I've ever played.

It could be ... My first JRPG was actually the un-numbered Final Fantasy for the SNES. I can't remember the title but I do remember the giant ice-squid boss thing and being stuck in the ice dungeon shortly after defeating it...Wasn't Final Fantasy VII also the first '3-D' RPG? I could be mistaken as I was never a PC gamer >.>;;

My first one was FFX, which is my favourite. I liked FFVII because of the comedy and the minigames, and when the comedy got lame, i still liked the chocobos.

I never though FFVII was the best JRPG I'd ever played, but it had a fun plot, some good characters and a few touching moments in the middle of all the crossdressing, MR T references and incestuous racing birds.

By first good JRPG was Grandia.

What a grand time I had. After that, when I played FF7 it just paled in comparison. It's not even in my top 10 JRPGs. It's good, but not nearly as good as people make it out to be.
Mmmmm.. Grandia.

/polishes 325 hour savefile with everyone's weapon and magic skills at 99.

Though actually I think my favourite JRPG, and the first really good one I played, was Breath of Fire 3.

Probably the first "true" JRPG (or rather, first game that can fit into most of the stereotypes) I played was Lunar: The Silver Star. It still ranks as one of my favorite RPGs of all time, and it still annoys me that I never beat the sequel. I also played Phantasy Star 2, FF 1 and 2 (US versions) before FF7 as well, but I don't know if those all fit into the JRPG mold like other games do today.

First JRPG? Dragon Quest.

FF7's popularity largely stems for it being the first one to jump to mainstream in North America, having a decent enough story for the time, and pretty solid graphics for the time.

Also, it was quite easy, and so it wasn't too difficult to get involved in. It moved at a fairly brisk pace, so rarely did you have to hover around somewhere and level up.

Edit: I also want to boldly support the love for Grandia. Despite the atrocity that was its voice acting.

"Oh flame burn 'em!"

For me it was my first true FPS, but I don't count that as the reason why I like it. I think for me the blend of seriousness and humour throughout the story was what keeps it my number 1.

Boring characters? Try most well realised characters in a game ever...
How to phrase this without sounding like an FFVII "hater"...
Hmm...

Okay, here goes...
The characters seemed to be fairly generic stereotypes, and in terms of usefulness, all of them completely interchangeable in gameplay (a trend that the the FF series thankfully got out of in time for IX).

The following series and games, I would argue, have far better, more realized characters:
Silent Hill
Tales (though still being quite stereotypical)
Half-Life
Chrono Trigger (didn't play Cross, don't know if it applies across the entire series)
SNES generation of the SaGa series
Mario RPG/Paper Mario
Fallout 1&2
Planescape:Torment
Eternal Darkness
Grandia
Lunar

Barret is a stereotype I'll give you that, but the rest? I don't get you.

I never played the vast majority of that list as I never owned a Playstation and am incredibly poor...

Chrono Trigger is awesome, but the character developement is, let's say, almost non-existant.

Half Life has you barely know anything about the people you're allied with, except that 90% of them magically worked in Black Mesa and also magically survived. It doesn't even explain the Vortigauns becoming good guys in HL:2.

That's all of 'em that I've played.

Final Fantasy has, for example, the scene where Tifa is literally inside Clouds subconscious and helps him piece together who and what he is. It also explains a lot about her.

Barret has the flashback scene where Coral is burned to the ground and then his showdown with Dyne.

Aeris' backstory is expained by her adopted mother, then enforced later by Professor Ghasts memoirs found in the town near the northern crater.

Cid's story is told by his woman, how she ruined his dreams and he hates her for it, and later you find how Shinra have been taking his assets from him for years.

Red XIII you find is the last of his race, wo believes his father a coward and traitor but finds out that his father was a hero, later his grandfather dies at his side.

Vincent was a Turk who was betrayed and experimented on by professor ghast. You meet his love interest in a cave and he has a set of flashbacks that explains even further.

FF7 was good in its own right. There were many JRPGs available to people at the time, and FF7 was better than a very large portion of them. So no, I don't think it's all about it being people's "first love".

There may be a significant amount of people for whom it was the first, but I think that has more to do with it being good enough, and a significant enough step forward from a lot of the 2D ugliness that came before, that more people actually tried it to begin with. As all geeks know, correlation does not imply causation.

As per the title, FF7 was my first ever JRPG. I actually bought my 2nd PS1 after a friend showed me a trailer on coverdisc he had just to play it (possibly the only time I've ever done so).

The scale of it blew me away compared to anything I'd ever played, and while I know that some of the other FFs are "better", they'll never compare to FF7 simply because it was my first, and it introduced me to JRPGs.

Actually the only gaming item (as in merchandise) I have sat near my PC is a figure of Red XIII.

FF7 was not my first JRPG. I played plenty of JRPGs before FF7, some better than others. My first Final Fantasy game gave me a bad first impression of the series. It was the DS remake of FF3. I honestly didn't like that game very much. Then I played FF7, and I was amazed at how awesome it was. The graphics are the only thing that hasn't aged well, but I'm not picky when it comes to graphics, so I don't really care. By the way, I played Chrono Trigger BEFORE FF7, and I thought they were both equally good. Some may disagree with that, but even so, I think FF7 lives up to its hype.

By the way, my three favorite JRPGs would have to be Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 6, and Final Fantasy 7, in no particular order. They are all awesome in different ways.
