Barret is a stereotype I'll give you that, but the rest? I don't get you.
I never played the vast majority of that list as I never owned a Playstation and am incredibly poor...
Chrono Trigger is awesome, but the character developement is, let's say, almost non-existant.
Half Life has you barely know anything about the people you're allied with, except that 90% of them magically worked in Black Mesa and also magically survived. It doesn't even explain the Vortigauns becoming good guys in HL:2.
That's all of 'em that I've played.
Final Fantasy has, for example, the scene where Tifa is literally inside Clouds subconscious and helps him piece together who and what he is. It also explains a lot about her.
Barret has the flashback scene where Coral is burned to the ground and then his showdown with Dyne.
Aeris' backstory is expained by her adopted mother, then enforced later by Professor Ghasts memoirs found in the town near the northern crater.
Cid's story is told by his woman, how she ruined his dreams and he hates her for it, and later you find how Shinra have been taking his assets from him for years.
Red XIII you find is the last of his race, wo believes his father a coward and traitor but finds out that his father was a hero, later his grandfather dies at his side.
Vincent was a Turk who was betrayed and experimented on by professor ghast. You meet his love interest in a cave and he has a set of flashbacks that explains even further.
