I want to see a game with a gay main character. Hopefully, the game would also be good, but you can't have everything. But yeah, that would break the dull mold. I don't buy boring games.

Yes. Maybe its the wanna be writer in me, but storyteller's are supposed to reflect the world with their words, their movies, their stories. The world has gay people. Therefor, your story should have gay characters.

Now, I don't see why people seem to assume that gay = THERE WILL HAVE TO BE A SEX SCENE. I mean, gay people think about sex about as often straight people do...which...is quite a lot, but its not all they think about. They also think about money and saving the world and when their new issue of the Escapist comes in...

As for RPGs, yes they need more options cause more options are always good if they're well written and fun...though, I will say that the fact that you can't seduce Kaiden as male Shepard in Mass Effect pissed me off cause...Kaiden is HOT man! Really!

You've not played Jade Empire, Mass Effect, KotOR or Fable, then? (just to name a few)
I've played Mass Effect and Fable, but in fable there isnt really a gay main character and in Mass Effect unless you play as a woman and try and get with the girls they arent really openly gay

A charachter's sexuality is of no more relevance to his/her worth and likebility than say his preference for cheese or lack thereoff, and thus matters nothing to me. I don't like cheese myself, but of course wouldn't have thrown Fallout 3 away is the manual or game had stated that the Vault dweller was a conneseur of cheese. Same thing as if it had stated that he/she was gay. There is absolutely no reason not to include gay characters, but like their preference for cheese, it should be a statement/fact relevant to the gameplay options or plot if mentioned in any greater detail, not just something trown in to be "progressive" (or lack thereoff, by considering homosexuality a big deal in 2009).

As RPG's are all about immersion and choices, I think that if a game includes relationships or sex, then it should include gay options as well - no reason not to do so. And if a game puts me in the boots of a preset gay character, fine by me - just as long as I get some sweet magic or mininukes to play with too.

I guess since you are gay then the premise of your question is fair, if you are trying to gage people's reactions, but I also think there should have been an option to just vote that a protagonist's sexuality has no bearing to gamers on whether they buy a game, you may have been even more pleasantly surprised iygwim?
I never really thought of using 'It really doesn't matter' as an option, and i've been reading all of these comments - and i AM pleasently surprised at the number of people who really don't care, its a heartwarming change of paradigm.

I don't see why not. As long as the game is good, the protagonist could be a transvestite that enjoys snuff films.

Yeah, i'm not counting games like Fable - they are a different kind of RPG. Your told to make your character yourself and if you don't like the plot -fine just go explore the world.
I'm not counting games where you CHOOSE to be gay, but ones where the storyline is written with characters in mind - FF and Tales for example.
Although thinking about it i remember that Zelos from Tales of Symphonia had some bi tendancies towards Lloyd.

I dont reckon I would. Not cos I dont like gays. But because the developer would have most likely put him there as a way to get there game noticed. Ans Shit like that pisses me off.

Well my Mass Effect character turned out to be a lesbian. I guess Spectres don't have the "don't ask, don't tell" rule.

I think it would be brilliant; a nice, refreshingly new persepctive and a different way to game.

wouldn't matter at all to me.
Provided that the game is a game i would want to play, i don't care who the main character is.

It would be nice to see more gay characters in games, but I don't think it should be pushed on the players. No focus around the actual homosexuality, no "Oh, you're gay?" statements, nothing that particularly highlights the whole extravaganza, just let them be there.

The option would be fantastic, and by all means, add as much focus on romance and stuff as you like, but in games where story is the main aspect (Mass Effect, for instance), if one of your crew's gay (male crew, to be precise) then let him be an option if you play the male commander - don't stress it, don't put focus on the gay thing, let it be an option, natural like how the world is.

I am awful at this. But yes, give more gay characters. No, don't put focus on them. Just let them be part of the entire picture, like we homosexuals are in the real world.

This is actually a difficult question for me. I say yes now, but I wonder if the main characters actions and decisions involving romance would put me off while playing. The only homosexuality I've run into in a game besides the opportunity to marry the same gender in Fable and The Sims is when a bi-sexual side character made a pass at the main character in Vandal Hearts 2 and that was played for laughs.
