It would just ruin the mood of the game. Because there Gay stereotypes that will ruin the Character. For instance would Halo be as badass if Masterchief made out with Arbiter. Or if Marcus wrote a love poem for Dom. One moment will be from blood sraying manlieness to... well gay manlieness and make the rest of the game ackward.

Im going togo ahead and state the obvious. the number of straight gamers drastically out numbers that of gay gamers.

For most straight gamers, playing a Gay main character who they cannot relate to, may keep them from enjoying the game.

And you can continue complaining and arguing about it, but until a gay game Dev creates a game, you (probably) wont see this happening, and it (probably) wouldn't sell well.

Well, one of Torchwood's main characters is gay and I don't mind, so I don't see why I would mind in an RPG either.

If you're thinking of Jack then his character is Bisexual but the actual actor is Gay

Non-demonic gamers also outnumber demonic gamers, but people still bought games from the Devil May Cry series. Non-super soldier gamers have made Halo massive. Arguing that people won't play as something they're not in a medium so full of fantasy and science fiction is a ltitle ridiculous in my opinion.

Playing as super soldiers is cool, and manly.
Most gamers like that.
Most gamers wouldn't like being a gay guy.

It's pretty simple, this really isn't a debate.

(Given that I'm about to unironically use the phrase 'I beg to differ', I'm fairly sure that this is, in fact, a debate)

I beg to differ (see, told you). Concepts such as 'cool' and 'manly' are really pretty slippery, changing over time and meaning different things to different people.

FUN RANT BEGIN NOW! In Japan, muscular men are regarded as more likely to be homosexual, whereas skinny guys are more likely to be straight and 'manly'. Hence why we look at the JRPG's and go "I'm not sure if this protagonist is male or female" and feel uncomfortable, whereas in Japan they're much more the norm. To speak in terms of manga, 'yaoi' is written by Japanese women and hence is about their 'heterosexual, manly' ideals - slender, beautiful bishies - whereas 'bara' is written by gay men and hence features muscular men. They're both gay romance/porn stories, but the ideas of masculinity are polar opposites to ours.

That's why so many manga have slim lead characters, who we would normally consider androgynous. It's their idea of heterosexual manliness. I'm not saying it's better or worse, just to show you that there is no one universal ideal of 'manliness' for developers to be going for.

Besides, heterosexual people play unmanly games. Harvest Moon, anybody?

Similarly, I don't think it's safe to say that it's 'uncool' to be gay. Look how much of the entertainment industry is gay outside of video games.

I also think you really don't speak for 'most' gamers, or even 'some' gamers. You speak for you, just like I speak for me. You don't want to play a gay character? That's your own thing, but no-ones going to force you to buy it and play it against your will. But we gay gamers want the option, just the OPTION, to be able to choose to pick up and play a game with characters we can sympathise with, because that's an option we don't have. That's what isn't open to debate.

It doesn't really matter. Are any of them really straight?

Look me in the eye and tell me this guy isn't gay:

I don't think it matters. I'll play a game whether or not the main character is gay.

Actually, that's a lie. I really dislike sex in mah vidjya games. If I wanted to watch virtual side-boob, I'd have purchased a hentai game. If a character, straight, gay, or otherwise, is openly really sexual in the game I won't play it. :(

I mean 'softcore' sexual, not sensual, which is different.

In Japanese culture, he's certainly the straightest straight guy on the planet.

No, really.

cool story though, bro.

And if you want the OPTION to play a gay character, make a game yourself.

Dont expect it from people who are making the game they want to.

The RPG template tends to be: you are a sword wielding unlikley hero with a huge destiny, you amass a party of quirky companions, the most important of which is a beautiful woman who you inevitably fall in love with - a love she inevitably returns.

To break the mold this is often played with: swords become magic, guns or cards, the beautiful woman can become mildly attractive and the quirky companions are interchangable with braindead AI drones.

I was wondering about the love mechanic - do you think that the main character, or secondry characters could be gay or have gay relationships with other characters - No Sex, just acknowledgement.

I was wondering how far you could take 'equality' before it became known as a 'gay game'.

Personally i think that gay secondry characters would be fine, no sex; just diologue that reflects that they care for each other.
Although im really not sure if kissing would be well recieved, so i'm on the fence there.
The closest I've come to this would be Makoto from Enchanted arms, and I'd actually say he was transgendered rather than gay, but in any case. It didn't bother me at all, so if there was a game based around a homosexual in a videogame as the main character(it will probably never be released) as long as it has decent gameplay and story, it won't bother me at all.

gay is fine in a game I suppose as long as it adds depth to the story and isn't for sensational media coverage.

I suppose I have no one but myself to blame for feeding this troll but.. did you actually read my post? You are not "most gamers" and hence can't speak for "most gamers". You do not know that "most gamers" would actively steer away from a game in which the protagonist is gay. If you do, that's you own thing, but you are objectively wrong here. Just look up at the poll results. "Most gamers" don't have a problem with playing a gay protagonist; they care more about the quality of the game.

To turn your logic back on you:

If you want the option to play as a manly space marine, make a game yourself.

Don't expect it from people who are making the game they want to.
