Hmmm... how about if you get to choose if your character is straight or gay? I can see nothing wrong with that, just another option when you create your character.
I think they wouldn't include that cuz' the a lot of "horny" teenagers would be making lesbians.

OT:I don´t care if my character is gay, straight,by.Just as long as the game is good.

I, honestly, don't really care.

I learned to accept homosexuals in video games, ever since Tony in Earthbound.

I love how every option assumes that playing as a gay character would put you off, talk about bias.
Oh-HO! Bias you say?
I'm just weary, thats all. I myself am gay, as well as a geek and a gamer, hence i noticed the non-existance (as far as i can remember, for i lack memory seriously) of gay characters in my favourite RPGs - by that i mean storyline RPGs like FF and not 'totally up to you' ones like Fable.
I realise that you remarked on my presumptuous undertone, and thats the reason behind this whole poll - i wanted to know how open gamers were to the idea of important gay characters - and to be honest i'm pleasantly surprised :) I never imagined that anyone other than myself would pick option one - now option landslide-majority, and this revelation puts hope and faith into my belief that society has moved in hell of a lot more equal direction than i had expected.
I guess since you are gay then the premise of your question is fair, if you are trying to gage people's reactions, but I also think there should have been an option to just vote that a protagonist's sexuality has no bearing to gamers on whether they buy a game, you may have been even more pleasantly surprised iygwim?
Bioware have never shied away from this issue (even if slightly weighted towards lesbianism over homosexuality, imo) And certainly the Sims is the best example of love whoever you want.
Thing is, to real gamers, the game is what counts :)

I would play such a game -if it was well written- because it had a gay main character.
Variety is due. The fact is, homosexuals aren't the mildly entertaining but repulsive stereotypes they're made out to be.
At least, when not indoctrinated by the stereotype and behaving as such.

I recall the half life 2 mod Radiator chapter 2 copped some flak recently because there was no forewarning to players that loading up they would discover themselves in the shoes of a gay man in couple's therapy. It got wierder still but I think the oddball slant of the gameplay, and it's lack of any sexualised content made it an innocuous - if frustratingly difficult - title.

The game is what counts. The skill and/or subtlety with which the characters are portrayed is a part of that. For the same reason a testosterone-oozing grizzled veteran might be wearing thin in recent years, a limp-wristed dandy would similarly be a bad character to base a game around.

I really couldn't care whether or not they like men, women, both, or dogs.

Actually, the dogs bit would be kind of creepy.

I read somewhere (it might have been on this site?) that there are very few gay people in the world, just as there are very few actually straight people. Most people are just varying degrees of bisexuality. Think about it - it's true.......there's always one or two people of the same sex that you'll have feelings for during your life.

So I guess i'm saying: no, I wouldn't mind at all.
Most of the characters in JRPG's seem a little gay anyway. I mean, have you seen what Vaan is wearing in FFXII? xD

Apparently in England a survey said 1 in 3 people are gay
Where on earth did you read/hear this?
Utterly incorrect.
That would put the population on the brink of extinction! xD

In Ireland it's apparantly 1 in 25 or something....
Which is four out of the average secondary school year, which seems about right.

isnt that what a person in the public eye says if they are photographed next to a sign that says "kill all gays"?

anyway, i dont care what the main character is sexually, as long as they can hold a weapon and make the bad people disapear in a cloud of blood and gore (its a simple view point but it works)

Yeah well, in Ireland I'm sure.

Yeah, I'd be fine with a gay main caracter in any game, not just an RPG. Game developers (or the general audience possibly) seem to love them white heterosexual males though.

If the main character was gay, It would make no difference. If it was obvious that they made the character gay in order to appeal certain demographics, that would be a strike against the game, but I would still look at its other merits. Media should treat sexuality of the characters primarily as a random chance, unless sexuality is a major theme of the media, and its unfortunate that sometimes we have to purposefully put forth effort to treat it as random. It's like the problem of bigotry leading to gay pride: I certainly understand the reaction to bigotry causing people to suddenly take pride in there sexuality, but in an ideal world, there would be no such thing as gay prides, because sexuality, straight or gay, is not worth the effort of identifying yourself as different over.

I think that Bisexual would be a more interesting choice for an RPG. Opens up meaningful choices, and media tends assume that everyone is either straight or gay.

I don't think you can really put forward an accurate percentage since any percentage is more reflective of that society's attitude towards homosexuality, ie, how comfortable someone is that they won't be judged! Besides which, why does it matter?

I'm pretty sure the upcoming Dragon age has a sex scene, and if you choose a female character it's a lesbian sex scene. I wonder if they had dildos in the time of magic and dragons......

It doesn't really matter. Of course, we all know how us guys feel about lesbian characters. And gay characters, I don't really care about.
