Ugh, I object to the 'cis' label.

What label would you prefer to have, then?

What's wrong with just using male and female? You don't need to go appending prefixes to describe the baseline of something.

If other people need additional parameters to adequately describe their gender, than so be it, but otherwise plain old male and female suits it just fine.

Excepting, of course, that there are rather obviously large numbers of people who are intersex. Intersex being the most obvious, but hardly the only, group that would fall into the "other" category.

(Unless, of course, the second line was a continuation of the attempt at "oppressive white male" humour, instead of a confirmation.)

Cis female here and I'm pretty darn happy to stay this way. I've never really questioned my gender, only femininity. Such as I used to hate wearing make up, and I was told I'm "not a real girl" because of that. I was also told I'm "not a real girl" because I wax instead of shaving. Possibly the dumbest thing I've ever heard, but there you go.

I've sort of had this. I get told I'm `emasculating`, for the weirdest crap. Like beating a guy at poker. Oh shit how manly of me to know how to play cards.

I kinda wish that stuff wasn't attributed to gender at all. That way boyfriend could get over himself and admit that he loves Disney movies just as much as I do, and I wouldn't get shit for liking games. Ah... if only.

I got shit for "staying in all day playing games"! I got some shit at school for beating boys at football. I wish my boyfriend would admit to loving disney movies too, he loves The Jungle Book and he admitted to really enjoying Beauty and the Beast and Toy Story, otherwise he won't watch any other ones with me and yet I know he will really love them, if not for the stories he will love the music. He keeps hinting at Frozen. I've seen it, when I had it on he insisted it was crap and wouldn't watch the second half. Now he whistles the tunes on occasion, knows the words to some of the songs and hints at watching it. If only!

Well, for the most part, yes, male and female work perfectly well, but occasionally additional parameters would be useful.

Things would be a lot better if those additional parameters weren't needed so often, but that's been slow to change.

I have no idea how it works, I was so confused by it. I don't understand how waxing = not feminine. When it was said I just couldn't really talk other than go "wha? I don't even...". It was said by someone who is usually very open minded, very mature, and very intelligent. It made it all the more weird and stupid and random.

One thing that comes to mind is that waxing is painful and painful things aren't feminine, dainty flowers and all that.

Ignoring things like menstruation, pregnancy, higher pain resistance on average etc. of course.

Did you only read half my post? Yes, additional parameters are sometimes needed or at least useful. No problem, use them when they help. What you're calling 'cis' is the baseline, a lack of extra parameters, so no need to add anything.

Mate, I still manage to nick myself with a safety razor from time to time. (Always on the tip of the chin.) I'd be liable to sever my own windpipe if I tried a straight razor.

Ah, seem to have missed your point entirely.

Anyway...I really don't like the idea of claiming a default of this sort of thing. Even if one group is much more numerous, deciding that they are the default is very othering for the other groups.

There is nothing old fashioned or unenlightened about men wanting to behave like men and women like women.

However, there is something very wrong with individuals pushing that expectation onto other individuals. Whether someone wants to do things in keeping with their traditional gender roles or not is their choice, and nobody else's.

(I'd also question the relevance of the majority of society supporting an idea or not)

The "vast majority" also adheres to a different version of what "men" and "women" are and what their "roles" are compared to even fifty years ago. Which kind of leads to the question of "so what?"
