I like the "SNES, Genesis, Turbo GrafX" generation mostly because that's when the console war was really a war. Sega vs Nintendo was awesome!

*sigh*

Those were the days.

Back in the day things were better. At least thats I have been told. I honestly was not around back in the day and only caught the second half of the 16 bit era. Everyone has a favorite time though, whats yers'?
anyone who tells you gaming was better when ## was a missile, they're an ignorant bint

I mean, c'mon, the original Doom? You can pretend it's fun to look like a gaming expert, but deep down in the chasm of your soul it's boring the shit out of you.
Just because you don't like a certain style of gaming because it is fairly old doesn't mean it isnt fun. The control scheme I admit is a bit dated now but they have plenty of programs that allow full look mouse control with the old 2d sprites. Hell you can even play Doom on the 360 now. The only modern games that captured what Doom 1 and 2 were about was Serious Sam and Painkiller, and it certainly wasn't Doom 3.
He's not wrong. Doom is boring as piss to me. Marathon, on the other hand. Give me something to analyze as I'm blasting through hordes of aliens baddies. That's what I like. Admittedly, I never played much of doom, though i'm justified in not being able to get into it.
First off its boring to YOU, thats fine, not everyone likes the same genres or subgenres of games. Curlycrouton however made a blanket statement that everyone finds doom boring as shit.

Second you say you haven't played much of doom and you are justified in not being able to get into it, in what sense? Dont enjoy the mindless killing? Is it the graphics?
You apparently missed the part where I mentioned a very similar carnage-filled violencefest of the same era of Doom, that I enjoy very much. Do yourself a favor and look up the Marathon trilogy. They're quite enjoyable shooters, more so if you take the time and brain power to digest the various terminals scattered throughout the levels. I do not find the slaughter or graphics keeping me from immersing myself but something about the game itself that's just bland and uninteresting and subtly whispers to me, "I'm like marathon, but without the cool sciencefiction bits".

I do agree with Curlycrouton where I've tried to play an old school game that is supposed 'the shit' and found it bland and uninteresting compared to games that are out now. I don't find most old games interesting and think a lot of people feel the same way but say otherwise because they want to fit in or be an elitist prick.
I admit I have not played marathon myself, I have heard of it but never given it a try. I will try it out though if I can find a copy of it.

Nostalgia undoubtly plays some effect in old school games, people tend to look more favourably upon games they have fond memories of. I would say alot of old school games don't stand the test of time. Newer games have taken what was revolutionary back then and added it as just another standard feature further improving upon what came before it. Take the orginal Half-life for example, back when it was first released it was something new and exciting. Now if you replay it most new games do a better job of most the elements that made it special.

There are however still old games that have not been supassed gameplay wise even today. If you like turn based squad games, X com is still your best bet. It has a great amount of depth to it and is still fun.

I wont comment on weather people want to fit in or be an elitist prick when it comes to choosing what games they claim to enjoy as I just don't know. What I do know is what games I genuinly enjoy be they old or new, Doom just happens to be one of the old ones I still enjoy.

Wii - far too useless to be commonplace, twitchy controllers, no support for gamecube controllers in the main menu, STUPID cheap speaker that completely stops immersion, gimicky games...
Eh? We keep playing with GC pads on Brawl and MarioKart.
Look again at the post, "in the main menu" _ see i use the GC controller all the time for SSBB but you need to use a different one to start the game, which is just plain lazy on Nintendo's end.

PS3 - Lack of games. Badly designed store. Annoying see-through controllers and skittish motion sensing. None of the potential it was sold on being put to much use...[snip]
Your reason against the PS3 don't really seem to hold weight, It has games, whats wrong with the store design? Whats wrong with the see-through controllers? Ok you got me on the motion sensing, that does get annoying.
I assumed i wouldn't have to get into the games thing since its been a key argument against the ps3 since its inception. Basically the ps3 has a massive lack of what i like to think of as 'standard' games - it has crap games and great exclusives but the middle ground between the 2 extremes has basically been taken by the 360. So as a ps3 owner once I'm done with the MGS-type exclusive, hyped, brilliant games you don't have much until the next one comes around.
(try looking into Game or a similar store and look at the width of the ps3 section compared to X360, Wii or PC)

The store argument is that its slow, tedious to navigate, completely doesn't fit in with the normal ps3 black/sleek feel and gives no clear indication of whether you've just started a download or not.
Let me clear up that last point, compare to the Xbox store where you get a little tick to show you've downloaded or are downloading something. Once you start a download on the ps3 store you're redirected back to where you were before so absent minded browsing leads to doing the same thing multiple times - sounds stupid I know but I've put this past ps3-owning friends before and I'm not the only one. Anyway this thread is about personal opinions so even if me and my goldfish-minded friends are the only ones its still a valid point.

The controller's see-through-ness to me adds to the cheap feel of the controllers ? it's clearly supposed to mirror the sleek finish of the ps3 shell but they didn't use thick enough plastic so it feels like they're cutting corners? Which is not something you want from the most expensive of the 3.

But in all honestly the reason that the ps3 arguments don't hold much weight is that despite owning all of the new-gen consoles I'm still a PS3 fanboy and I love my big shiney monolith ^_^
Touche.

You won't have to find a copy. Before they were eaten up by teh evilzorz microsoft, Bungie released the source for Marathon. Shortly thereafter some people went and adapated it (and the dev tools associated with it) into a version for windows, OSX, and linux. Head to Source.bungie.org and you can grab it, and it's sequels for free, as well as a variety of user-made scenarios.

I can see people like older games for sentimental reasons, I just don't get how they're seem to think the SNES was the greatest video game console ever. I have fond memories of it, but I certainly don't think it tops my Xbox, nor does it come close content to wise to me.

2004 was an epic year for games:
GTA San Andreas
Burnout 3
Katamari Damacy

That may have been gamings greatest year ever and I've been playing since the atari/coleco/intellivision generation.

Really difficult choice, but I had to go with the last generation, purely because I'm still on that one.
My only real experience with the newest generation is the decidedly average Nintendo Wii (not that I was very surprised about it though... I knew it'd be gimmicky and be waist deep in carbon copies of Mario, Metroid Prime and Zelda games). But the Xbox 360 and the PS3 look awesome...

Since I'm a massive RPG fan I would have to say 1996-2000 were the best 5 years for gaming ever, they certainly have a far higher ammount of great RPGs.

I really can't answer this. I've been through every gen mentioned, and they all had high points and low points. One thing I miss from the first is stuff like Maze Craze. Maze Craze was and is so much fun.
