I'm a huge fan of Bioware, Starwars, and the idea of a Star Wars MMO that probably won't suck, but to me TOR looks like its gonna be to Rift, what Rift is to WoW.

Guild Wars was a great game, and I've played it to death, but it has some real keys flaws, the gear system is oversimplified, yet at the same time its not as ridiculous and massively central as it is for WoW. The skill system worked really great, as it forced players to put thought into planning out strategies and builds for all the content, but at the same time, there wasn't really anything to advance or earn other then elite skills. The instanced explorable areas were good and bad, they made questing much less ridiculous as you never had to wait for anything to respawn, but they also made the game sort of a single player experience with a massively multiplayer co-op component. With Guild Wars 2, Arena Net is pretty much re-examining every flaw they can find in MMO's and trying to fix them. From what I can tell the game will either be really good, or great. There's a lot of hype, sure, but I think a lot of it is justified.

Guild Wars 2. TOR looks like it'd be fun, but similar to many other MMOs out there. Guild Wars, on the other hand, did an excellent job of breaking the mould the first time and seems to be outdoing that attempt this time. That and I really can't afford subscription fees and don't want to get bogged down trying to get my money's worth...with Guild Wars 2, I can buy it, play it, and take a break if I feel like it without worrying about losing money because of it.

EDIT: Vote is 1:1 so far, wow.

I've been really excited about The Old Republic for a long time. The amazing world of the Old Republic with the expertly crafted storytelling of Bioware, it just seems like the perfect combination.

Uhhh...

The first Guild Wars broke the mold last time?

How?
Low level cap, no stupid grinding the same shit over and over again, instanced everything, multiple tiers and forms of pvp, should I go on?

I'm playing Guild Wars now and I'm doing literally nothing but grinding. I've hit the level cap and gotten the 70 armor set, and I now have nothing to achieve except Hall of Monument points. I'm going through quests, which due to the restriction of going in groups, you get minimum xp and loot (the loot with which you can buy nothing of value). Yes, everything is instanced, cutting you off from the world entirely except when you're in hubs.

What do you mean by multiple tiers, and as far as PvP goes there's absolutely no learning curve in the arenas. I don't count the battlegrounds as PvP because the primary objective is killing NPCs.

I am looking forward to both, but somehow I think GW2 could be the game that holds longer my interest, because I think that I will play a few class stories in SWTOR and then drop off.

You know, I wouldn't go to their manifesto. Mostly because of just how mean spirited it is. Sure, they're doing neat things. But they always talk about how much better their game is than the rest of the industry.

There's enthusiasm and then there's claiming that the rest of the industry sucks.
They are not claiming that the rest of the industry sucks. They are claiming that they are creating a different game, they are making a step forward in MMOs.

They are not going to follow the herd and create a MMO with the same old stale combat. They are not going to create "Trinity" classes. No, in order to create a new MMORPG, one that is different than the hundreds of others WOW-clones out there is to change everything.

Dynamic Events replace quests in GW2. There are 1500+ events. These events can be triggered by the player or they just happen themselves. Doesn't matter. The point is that these events will continue to unfold, whether the player is there or not. If you participate in the event you can stop those ogres from raiding the human village. But if you don't, that village is going down. It's going to be destroyed and rebuilt by ogres, with their architecture. Then the players can take back the village. But if they don't, the ogres will continue to take over other villages. And once completed these events start again after a certain time. But every time could be different, depending on when the players stop the ogres.

The classes in GW2 do not follow the traditional Trinity system. There is no dedicated tank and healer in GW2. The most effective heal is your self-heal skill. Every class can deal damage, support and offer control in their own unique way. A warrior can place banners on the battlefield to buff allies. An Elementalist can use Water attunement to heal allies and buff allies. And there are no single-target buff skills. All of them are either point-blank skills or ground-targeted.

There is no gear grinding in GW2. Max level armor is not hard to obtain and there is not this one set or armor that is better than all other. From level 1 to level 80 the player can choose what armor to wear. You can obtain the best gear in the game from everything. From Dynamic Events, through dungeons, through World vs. World vs. World PvP. The only difference is cosmetic.

Just check out the main site and the wiki if you have questions. Or ask me! I'm always happy to answer!

@ TypeSD: Thank you!

By making customization of your skills essential even from the first few levels, rather than offering an onslaught of X Damage in X Way abilities to fill the screen and make characters clones of their own class. It allowed/encouraged cross-class builds, also from early on.

It doesn't separate everyone into servers, so anyone can play with anyone else with the game (probably done before Guild Wars, but it was done well here). It also focuses on a story-based progression, the likes of which only hit WoW in the WOTLK (Death Knight starting area, basically). The world changes as you progress through it, and missions will adapt to your progress in quest chains accordingly. Basically, it builds itself up as a Cooperative-RPG with MMO aspects thrown in.

Of course, the clincher is that it has no subscription fees. I've not played it enough to say how it works at higher levels, but the impression I've gotten so far is that customization and playstyle is significantly more important than your level and gear. Most MMOs can't claim that, where a great player at level 50 will stand no chance against a level 60 in high-end gear.

I could go on, but the jist is that places priorities on very different things to most MMOs, and it shows in gameplay.

The way I am looking at it is that GW2 will do more to advance the MMO genre.

Before I say this... I am NOT saying this in a negative light.....

ToR is taking the WoW approach. Its taking an established format and structure, refining and polishing the hell out of those mechanics, and then adding its own spin to the genre. Exactly what WoW did to ever quest, FFXI, FQ2 and every other MMO that existed before it did.

For that.. I think when the dust settles.. ToR will end up being the bigger more popular game compared to GW2... however, much like GW.. GW2 is going to end up offering more innovation, and offer differences that go outside of the MMO norm.

So.. My vote would be GW2 (though unfortunately due to circumstance I will likely end up playing TOR even though I really dislike star wars mythos, and Not really all that interested in WoW-ish game mechanics) If your looking for a new MMO... If I had the ability I would jump into the one that does things differently rather than the one that just spit shines the brass off of the doorknob that is the industry standards. Because unless your moving to something dramatically different, whats the point to move to something eerily similar?

Definitely Guild Wars 2. This game is awesome; play it and see for yourselves. I guarantee you've never played anything like it.

The Old Republic is cool, don't get me wrong. It looks like it will be a lot of fun, and is clearly a well-made game with heavy emphasis on story. If I were to play two MMO's I'd certainly play both. Only one sub definitely makes that possible.

I probably shouldn't vote since I'm looking forward to both equally, and I'll be getting both. GW2 seems to have very great ideas in store in how to make an MMO fresh and fun. While TOR is going to deliver a very strong Star Wars storytelling experience like you'd expect from Bioware. And hopefully along with some cool gameplay mechanics, I am already liking the optional quests that you get automatically and the fact that you can let your companions gather resources and do crafting because, HEY, you're a hero, you don't have to craft if you're not an avid grease monkey.

So yeah, I'm looking forward to both equally and well, I'll see which one I play more when I have both. Depending on which game offers me the most fun, which to me often means which has the best roleplaying environment.

Old Republic most definitely. I didn't even like Guild Wars 1 so to be honest I didn't even know a second was being made.

Gonna go with Guild Wars 2.

Everything I've seen from The Old Republic just looks more and more like WoW, and I quit WoW because it eventually just got boring. I think I'll end up giving it the same response I gave Rift. "Yep. That [specific mechanic] was kinda cool, but I really wish it wasn't just another WoW."

Meanwhile, Guild Wars 2 is looking like it will do something new instead of just seeming to say, "Yeah. Uh. We're totally making new stuff!"

The last Star Wars MMORPG failed miserably. This new one looks pretty yes but I don't think that Star Wars is the sort of Universe for an MMORPG with leveling and stuff like that. The only exception I would make for this is if one of the classes was 'Star Pilot' and spaceship battles and space travel was fully integrated into the game. Until then though I'm not interested in entering that universe.

Guild Wars 2 makes more sense and even though it's in the realm of the tried and true fantasy elements I still it looks far more polished and more fun.

Basically, all of what you just described is optional and isn't necessary in any way to advance the main quest. HoM stuff is just bling for GW2, I should know, I'm at 45/50.

Oh yes, and the tiers of PvP in Guild Wars

Random Arena
Team Arena/Codex Arena
Heroes Ascent
Guild Versus Guild.
