Q) Has the Wii U scared you off buying an NX console?

A) While I am hesitant about purchasing the NX, it has little to do with the Wii U scaring me off of a potential purchase. In fact, part of the reason is due to how much I have enjoyed my Wii U and the experiences it has provided. That I'll get onto in a bit though.

What puts me off purchasing an NX is the fact that we still know next to nothing about it. We know it is coming out in March 2017, and we know it will have the upcoming Legend of Zelda game on it, but we pretty much know nothing else about it. There are rumours it is a console, rumours it is a handheld, rumours it will be digital only, rumours it will use cartridges; I can't tell if I want an NX because I don't know what it is. Without knowing what it is, I naturally have no plans to get it, and I will only start considering whether I'll get an NX once I know what it is.

As for the Wii U; I've loved the system to bits. An I don't mean just the games on the Wii U, but I mean the system in of itself. The Wii U has a lovely menu screen, clear and simple to navigate. It has an easy to utilise digital store, and Miiverse has allowed me to converse and make friends with many fellow Nintendo fans. It has backwards compatibility with the Wii library; my favourite game library of all, and a range of controller options. The cream of the crop for me though is the Wii U GamePad, which is easily my favourite controller I've ever used. The controller is a perfect size and weight for me, and is filled with wonderful functions such as a touch screen (which makes typing so much easier), off-tv play, dual screen gaming, separate screen gaming, and gyro controls.

The game library of the Wii U hasn't blown me away quite like the Wii did; and it so far lacks an exclusive game that I crown in my heart as the best of the best, but it has still provided me with plenty of enjoyment. Child of Light and Project Zero: Maiden of Black Water have been my favourite games on the system so far, but I have also enjoyed the likes of The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD, Super Mario 3D World, Splatoon, Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Pokk?n Tournament, Hyrule Warriors, Nihilumbra, Wonderful 101, Star Fox Guard, Trine 2, and many more. Combined with the gameplay options that open up thanks to it's backwards compatibility with Wii games, as well as it's virtual console, and there has been plenty gaming wise to delight me with the Wii U.

It is perhaps my desire to give the Wii U the usual minimum of five years worth of focus, to continue to have fun with the system, that I've actually paid little attention to the NX news and rumour mill. The unknown of the NX is of little interest to me whilst I still have the Wii U to enjoy.

I hope Nintendo makes some serious sequels too (Mario Galaxy 3...), but innovation is better than stagnation, and at the very least, Nintendo consoles are well constructed machines, so I can't be that disappointed. We shall wait and see.
Not wanting another monochrome shooter is not the same as wanting gimmicky controls. The Gamepad's greatest contribution is off-TV play but there is nothing innovative about a second screen. Not since the DS was doing it 8 years before Wii U did it. Honestly, the second screen on the Wii U is kind of a nuisance when it's not being used as a another TV. On the DS/3DS you don't need to look up to see the top screen or down to see the bottom screen. Both screens are in view with no head movement involved. In 2011 when they announced the Wii U at E3, I said this is just a console version of a DS. It was a bad idea put together (and named) for the wrong reasons.

After all the gimmicky controls we have seen in the last two generations, people still strongly prefer traditional controls. Nintendo just likes the gimmicky controls because it sets them apart, so they don't have to compete.
Making this clear: These are my opinions about how I feel about the Wii U, not what the world thinks. I liked the motion controls and the Gamepad. Yes, they were sometimes difficult at first, because I didn't have the muscle memory for them like the rest, but I adapted and got better and frankly, found the motion/Gamepad controls to be better in games like Splatoon. I liked the dual-screen functionality for ZombiU and XCX. They made the games more fun!

The brown shooter is everything that is wrong with AAA gaming, but what I was talking about was even down the controls. I can't stand playing FPSs on controller because they are sluggish, but there are legions of players who have developed a shitton of skills and muscle memory using controllers for FPS, so it's completely standard now. Sure, it's great to pick up a controller and be comfortable, but I've been playing since Atari 2600 and I have had to adapt to at least a dozen different controllers, from Coleco to Atari and NES and SNES and N64 and GC and PS and Xbox and K+M and Wii and DS and now Wii U. I was happy that the Wii U supported both a traditional and the new Gamepad. I have no intention of buying a PS4 or X1 because everything about them is identical to the last generation. The games, the controls, the bullshit. Just iterated. Nintendo doesn't just iterate, and that's why I'm not put off by the Wii U.

I've gotten tired of Nintendo's games long before the Wii U had a chance to scare me off.

Also, as I have pointed out several times before, the WiiU is the only current console that reliably runs its games at 60 fps
Sure, but then their games are pretty lacking graphically, and most of them only run at 720p.

What ''brown shooters'' besides probably CoD are coming out this year? I guess Doom kind of counts, but it looks cartoony to me as well.

The NX better wow me like I've never been wowed before or I'll never pick it up after being burned so bad by Starfox Zero. I just want a regular console with a pro controller bundled in there. Have your gimmick 2nd controller with a screen function, but don't make it packaged with the console so Nintendo and devs don't feel obligated to use the gimmick on games.

Also, don't give it a stupid name, especially one that sounds just like the console that came before it. You got no idea how many of my coworkers have no clue that the U is an entirely different console than the original Wii.

The only thing the Wii U (and to a lesser extent, the Wii) has me worried about in regards to the NX is the lack of support. I like my Wii U, but Nintendo are desperate to bury it and move on, and besides 2014 they never made great efforts to give it some titles consistently.

The NX might have some games I'm really interested in, but what if it underperforms and Nintendo decide to just move on again when the next Xbox and Playstation come out?

The reason I would argue the Wii U is awful is that the tablet controller is irreplaceable.
Yeah well no shit.

So if it breaks you are out of options.
It's a good thing they made it durable as fuck and one has to wonder what in the hell you are doing to the damn thing to warrant this being a big issue sans a really unfortunate series of events.
So you agree that the controller is awful yet felt the need to be impolite. I can see where this is going. I guess I didn't go into making a thread about Nintendo not being perfect with a thick enough skin at the ready. So I apologise for sounding butt hurt.

I agree the Wii u controller is well made and I've kept mine in good condition, but the fact that you have already agreed that making the thing irreplaceable is a bad move sort of renders your point pointless.

As long as it has the sequel to the Game of the Gen - Splatoon I will probably buy it.

The entire idea of making a console where only one player has the primary system controller is ridiculous. If I am not mistaken, you can't even use the Gamepad on the NSMB U in multiplayer mode to play (it used a parents tool) and at launch you had to use Wii Remotes.

Try to imagine if the SNES launched with only one, non replaceable controller and the system only supported one hooked up at a time. The second player was required to use an NES controller instead.

i find it hilarious that everyone shits on Nintendo for having "Gimmicky" gimmicky controls and meanwhile everyone is lapping up Oculus Rift and PSVR like no tomorrow.

the VR Headsets are probably the biggest gimmicky things out there since the Wiimote. XD

some 480p games like Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime 3 look better than some 1080p games of today. XD

Yeah, not me though. I can honestly say that I am not currently interested in VR.

A fair bit, yeah. Outside of the Platinum stuff, there wasn't many games that I cared for. I just think I'm caring less and less for Nintendo's staples to be honest, they've become a bit boring.

Still, if they do have exclusive Platinum stuff for the NX I'll probably pick one up eventually.

The Wii U has more exclusives on it I give a shit about than the PS4 or Xbone.

Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze
Super Mario 3D World
Splatoon
Bayonetta 2
Hyrule Warriors
Mario Kart 8
Smash Bros U
Xenoblade Chronicles X
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate
Super Mario Maker
Yoshi's Wooly World

The PS4 has precisely two games I want to play and can't play on PC - Bloodborne and Disgaea 5 - which is why I have a PS4.

Since Killer Instinct came out on PC, there is literally 0 titles on the xbone I want to play but can't do so on my PC.

If you hate Halo and Uncharted there's little reason in my opinion to even own these consoles if you have a gaming PC.

Oh wow, things got ugly fast.

I have no real desire to buy an NX after the Wii U failed. I don't hate Nintendo, I just don't trust them after this launch. I may change my mind in the future, but that's only after they've earned my trust back. The Wii U wasn't a bad console, but it feels like a slap in the face as a consumer for them to change it now.

the fuck you on about OP?

The Wii U is the best console this generation and is basically a fucking gamecube. small userbase, but so many freaking awesome games.

at least it actually has a unique library instead of just generic turd party shit and Remasters.

Dat RemasterStation 4...
Tell me about this unique library of yours. Remember key word " Unique". Your words not mine.
what do you want to know?

how the wii u library doesn't consist entirely of generic turd party shit like Call of Duty, Ass Creed, GTA, EA Sports games, etc?
I don't see the difference between the yearly releases of Mario and the yearly releases of Assassins Creed. The only real difference is that you evidently like the first more then the latter. I also don't see the moral difference between the cheap DLC practices of other studios and Nintendo's habit of forced scarcity for amiibos, locking content between different versions of the same game, and their attempts to monetize the assets of youtube lets players. I mean, their not worse then other companies, but they certainly aren't better.

Also, a little silly to mock the third party remasters on Ps4 when Nintendo has hd remasters of Ocarina of Time, Majoras Mask, Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess...

really? you think Mario 3D World, Mario Kart, Mario Party and Mario Tennis are all the same now?

Also, a little silly to mock the third party remasters on Ps4 when Nintendo has hd remasters of Ocarina of Time, Majoras Mask, Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess...
1. only Wind Waker and TWilight Princess were HD

2.
The Last Of Us Remastered
Uncharted The Nathan Drake Collection
Beyond 2 Souls Remastered
Heavy Rain Remastered
GTA 5 Remastered
God of War III Remastered
Tomb Raider Definitive Edition
Quantic Dream Collection
Injustice: Gods Among Us Ultimate Edition
Gravity Rush Remastered
Final Fantasy X/x-2 HD Remaster
Final Fantasy Type 0 HD
Final Fantasy 7 Remastered AND Remake
DMC Definitive Edition
Dishonered Definitive Edition
DMC4 Special Edition
Constructor HD
Cel Damage HD
Castlestorm: Definitive Edition
Borderlands: The Handsome Collection

But sure. Nintendos 4 Zelda Remakes TOTALLY outweigh all of those on the RemasterStation 4.

not directly, because the wii was the same way...

pretty much everything nintendo screams as "innovation" or touts as a feature, it's pretty much something I don't like or couldn't muster up even one fuck to give about. I've played enough of their flagship titles to know that the new ones don't offer anything I'm interested in, and their games lack pretty much everything I like in games.

also reflected in this, is their controllers, dear god did they get it right with the gamecube, but then they threw that away with the wii and wiiU, so I can only imagine the NX will be similar to that.

ps4 pretty much has the exclusives I'm interested in that aren't on pc, so nintendo is going to have to try 8 billion times harder if they want my money.

also holy shit, jeffers apparently had a younger sibling that's come out to play

it comes across like the kid who needs attention "look what I can do!" because he's a C student who is below average in pretty much everything in life.

Cool, but I have no interest in spending my money on it...like at all.

also you're referring to that game that had an artificial supply, hence they were selling for 90-100 dollars a pop for years, let alone if you could find one, and are just now getting back down to 65 bucks? That game?

yeah fuck that, Blizzactivision usually takes the cake on price gouging, but nintendo isn't far behind them when it comes to money.

Xenoblade Chronicles X came out december and there's still heaps of stock of it on the shelves......
