I'm not an American, so I'm not sure if I should be asking this ... but why do people call Obama black?

Ann Dunham was as white as bone ...

I mean, I hear Americans say he's black, and people labelling him as America's first black president ... but isn't all this simply adding to the problems in the first place?

If Obama himself places importance on being black, despite coming from a multi-ethnic partnership, then why should it be a surprise that people are going to be playing the race card?

Isn't Obama and his supporters who place any importance on Obama's perceived blackness (whilst detracting the importance of his mother's influence on him, both genetically and culturally) just as guilty as those that say it detracts?

Besides ... why would Obama himself place great importance on his biological father's heritage anyways?

Barrack Obama Sr. didn't even raise him ... Lolo Soetoro did ... an Indonesian national.

Despite being a single parent with a 6yr old child (eventual president), Lolo Soetoro (quite a wealthy man) requested her hand in marriage and despite an eventual divorce I had heard he was a magnificant father figure to Obama. If Obama wasn't playing the 'race card' as you put it, then why doesn't he honour his father's Indonesian background, and his mother's white ethnic Kansas upbringing, or Hawaiian education?

As such, if Obama is playing the race card ... then why is it such a shock others are too in America is basically the question I'm asking? ... I don't condone racism ... I just see both obama and the racially motivated individuals hypothesised outh there by Carter as equally guilty of perpetrating racial agendas.

I'm sure that some of the people against Obama are racist, but it's probably a small number of people. Most of the people against Obama are Republican, not necessarily racist.

I don't hate President Obama, nor does his skin color make a bit of difference to me unless he himself makes it so.Sure,he's kind of a doofus sometimes, but who isn't?And compared to the last Bozo who held the office,he's doing OK.
I think a lot of people who think they hate Obama actually are just partisan nincompoops who would hate anyone from the "other" side of the aisle.A lot of them probably thank God on a daily basis that they have a Democrat in office again so they can boost up the ratings by boosting up the hatings.

Carter can go shove it then, along with Bill Cosby and whoever else thinks those against Obama are just racists.

I am sick of the race card being used. ENOUGH ALREADY!

I hate his policies, not his race.
What about his policies do you hate?

Also, claiming that people don't like Obama because he's black is just stupid. Some people might dislike having a black president, but not everyone. I think most people dislike him because they're not used to things changing that much. So, when somebody says there should be some sort of health-care reform everybody freaks out and starts calling them communist (not that there's anything wrong with that (cookie?)).

There is a huge issue about race when it comes to Obama. I don't think anyone's saying "If you dislike Obama you are a racist, pure and simple", but a large number of people that do hate him base their hatred mostly on his skin colour. Look at all these 'tea party' idiots, their only criticisms of Obama are that he's a muslim, a terrorist, born in Kenya, a witch doctor. These are all racially motivated lies, that would not have happened if he was white. John McCain wasn't born in the USA, and when it was raised, it was quickly shot down by both democrats and republicans. Why couldn't the same have been done for Obama?

A lot of the criticisms of Obama are completely unjustified, made by people who are trying to justify their racism by making ridiculous assertions about the presidents character. There is plenty to criticise about the current administrations policies, but the far right have decided to make it a race issue.

And I think some of you need to read the article. Saying "There is an inherent feeling among many in this country that an African-American should not be president" does not mean "Everybody's a racist". I think we could probably all agree that there are many who fear the president because of his skin colour, and that Jimmy Carter has a valid point.

Racists are inevitable, however, I don't think all Obama haters are racist.

There's certainly a definable number using various racial slurs, should anyone actually be bored enough to sift through YouTube and other such Internet hot spots and find how many messages contain a racial slur and the word Obama.

I don't hate Obama. But if he was a white man, McCain would be in the white house.

That's all I'm saying. People wanted to have a black president so badly they would've chosen a random guy off the street if they had to.

But I'm already in the targeting sights of about 6 million Obama supporters, so I'll stop there.

Just because people dont agree with him, dont mean they hate him, or that hes a racist.

Its appalling how quickly the race card was played, and they should be ashamed of themselves.

There are legit complaints and issues with the guy, and to the majority of people, race has nothing to do with it.

So one or two random racists show up at a rally of some kind, and suddenly 40%+ of the country are racists?

Gah. What he's saying is that a lot of dissent is due to racism. Which is clearly his opinion, and entirely unproven. Not that dissent=racism. Though it seems that some elements of his miserable little party are using that equation....

I think it's weak to pull out the race card but, all the "tea parties" are missing to be considered a klan rally is the white hoods. Come on, seriously, only a few people were African American or Hispanic.

Hatred in America has gone completely out of control.
I see so much vitriolic hatred it makes me glad I?m not living there/

Why do you Americans bother hating Osama Bin Laden when you obviously hate each other far more?

PS, before you even think it, I didnt confuse Obama with Osama Bin Laden,

I don't even see why Americans are so against health care reforms.... especially considering that the current system just isn't working. Just seems like the Republicans are playing with people's lives and are just resentful that they won't get political points for fixing it.
