Poll: Hating your art

Since I've been here, I've noticed that a lot of escapies are artist in some way. In case you didn't know, my field is film. Anyways, Something I've noticed is that I never seem to like what I have created. Every time I finish a piece, I always find flaws in what I create and I feel like I could have done better. This isn't limited to film with me, I also feel this way with paintings, tags, graphic designs, even doodles. So I want to know, does anyone else feel disappointed when they finish their work?

An artist who can look at his/her work and find the flaws and sometimes not be satisfied with it is a common aspect of good talent. It encourages self improvement and ultimately I find the verdict of whether or not such art piece is good or not lies in the audience.

I am often not satisfied with my witting and sometimes feel I went half assed on it (I do sometimes ) and more often than not I have peers commenting and respecting my good witting skills despite my resentments.

Disliking your own work is not a bad thing at all because thinking your work is perfect can have a negative affect on your own skills I find.

Yeah whenever i draw something I look at it and its just not how I
imagined it in my head. Same with the stories I write.

Hating what you do is what drives you to become better.
It's practically required.

This is true, though I'm not sure it's required.

I usually have some sort of odd combination of pride and distaste for everything I create. There are very few occasions where I've been completely satisfied with my art (in any of the mediums I'm partial to).

I have a books worth of story about my IP Kirisani but I always tell myself that they suck and just leave them buried.

Now I look at other people's art and I feel inadequate.

That's how you know you enjoy what you do.

I've never been satisfied with something I've written, and only consider something finished when I can not find what is wrong with it apart from my gut instinct.

Which has only happened about once.

I always have trouble pointing out anything I like about my art. And although I'll look at someone else's art and really like it, I'm incapable of saying what I like about it, because I can never pinpoint it. Instead I point out what needs improvement, and my friends begin to think their art sucks because all I can do is critique and point out what they did wrong.

Over Half my family are the artsy types and I've noticed that if they're not disliking their work then honestly, it doesn't seem to be that good. Basically what I'm saying is that if you're not critising your own work all the time then you're not an artist, you just think you are.

Indeed. I can't even paint an abstract with canvas and oil without going "DAMN IT, I suck! I give up! I'm a goddamn disgrace to talented artists" at about a quarter of the way through.

Same goes with the books I've started. "Oh, come on, COME ON, nobody's going to read these, because you suck, and the whole world knows it! You can't write for shit!"

I almost always feel a sense of pride once I'm finished. That feeling lasts for a only a few seconds, and that's when I start hating things again.

I did some paintings a few years ago and every time I look at them I notice more flaws, same thing with the short fiction I wrote.
