I like the way you think LaughingTarge. Myself,I carry a pair of kerambits, and my trusty USP wherever I go. Had lots of training in Silat, and Eskrima, and the basic USMC martial training.

Pocket knife (one of those with a little knob you can use to flip the blade out like a switchblade). I use to carry it all the time. As I improved at martial arts, however, I haven't carried it as much. Maybe I'm just arrogant or something, but I've learned I'd rather avoid a fight than win and be tried in court. Not carrying a weapon encourages me to find other ways to deal with trouble. Besides, weapons are everywhere if one looks hard enough.

Still, fair fights are for suckers.

Depends what you call a weapon. I haven't actually taken things like a knife or a gun with me to parties, but if I'm up late at night and I hear sounds around the house I will bring something to hit with with me when exploring the sound. Be it a pen or a glass.

i carry a pocket knife. But it's mostly for cutting open packaging.

i don't need to defend myself where i live. We've had 1 crime in 20 years and they never did catch the guy.

I do not feel so odd for carrying now. I usually carry a CZ 75 B in my truck. I sometimes carry a S&W M&P40 compact, as well as a Taurus 850 CIA.

I prefer the CZ as it was actually the first handgun I bought. It has an excellent track record as great weapon, 9mm is an easy size to obtain ammo for, and it has the highest capacity of any of the above mentioned guns. Also the only one I have actually used to defend my self. That was a few nights ago, I shot a coyote.

Oh and I do have a carry permit.

Edit: I do not consider most folding pocket knifes weapons. They look like they should be useful, but really a 2 1/2 inch blade or shorter (usually shorter), designed to be held the way they are. It is a tool, a simple cutting tool. I actually stopped carrying knifes I carry a razor knife that has storage for 5 blades in the handle. Much more useful as a tool.

I am working on a way to fit a lawyer into a bullet. Just aim, fire and the victim dies of old age while mired in litigation.

For everyday use I am usually carry a small three inch folding knife but I am looking for a straight edge that is legal in my state.

Old enough to carry a tazer fist (its like brass knuckles but there are tazer spikes across the knuckles). Only bring it with me when I go to Oakland or bad parts of SF.

A couple of blades, although they aren't strictly for self defense.
Knives are universally useful.
It's not that I feel threatened where I live or anything, I'm just a firm believer of expect the worst; hope for the best.

Basically, this is just another form of insurance. I have auto insurance, but I don't expect to run into another car on the highway. I have health insurance, but I don't expect to end up in the hospital for weeks on end and run up huge bills. I have homeowners insurance, but I don't expect to have it burned down when I come home from work. Weapons are merely a form of insurance. Never had to use any of them and hope I never will, but I will not be caught with my pants down.

Criminals don't follow laws, so I can't expect some legislature or police force to be able to keep me safe. I'd rather be judged by 12 than be carried by 6.
This man terrifies me.

Bit heavy on the testosterone in this thread... Statistically the most likely victim of a 'self-defence' weapon is the owner.

'I never leave the house without an M249 SAW, two katanas and a pocket Batman. Pull the string and he inflates to full size and beats up villains.'

Seriously though, learn to box. It is extremely unlikely you will accidentally punch yourself.

your criticizing LaughingTarget simply for being prepared. Its a reality that people are mugged, wounded, and killed in America everyday and he doesn't want to be the victim. Even if you can't imagine bad things happening, violent crime still occures in Britian and it would be wise to prepare for it. I am not recommending you break any laws, but faceing the reality of the day is not paranoia, and it is not healthy to simply ignore it. No warm blooded warm blooded American would ever object to you taking such precautions.

Why are there the same amount of votes for "Always" as "Never"? Whats that about? Some seriously paranoid people out there, I mean the only thing you are ever going to need those weapons for will be other people like yourself attacking you... or maybe a dragon, but they dont exist so stop being ridiculous.
It's always for me because it's just a habit. I put on pants every day without thinking about it and it isn't because I'm paranoid about people seeing my Superman boxer shorts. I don't even think about it, I put on pants, shirt, IWB holster, SpringfieldXD, slip the knife sheath for the SEAL knife on my belt under my shirt, hand the HideAway knife around my neck then head out the door.

As I said above, which is the philosophy held by the vast majority of martialists, it isn't because we go out afraid of the world or expecting trouble, it's there in the off-chance something may happen. The folks at VA-Tech would have loved to have me in their class when that nutjob burst in, they thought it could never happen to them, but it did.

1 in a million still has a 1 in it. I'm ready for the 1 but know that the other 999,999 is what will most likely happen.
Its just not in my nature to hurt people, I dont really care for being stabbed up but I cant imagine anyone making the conscious decision to do so as I am never armed... what would be the point? Also, I live in Britain. Fire Arms are illegal and I can probably get away unscathed from a knife attack, I have lived 19 years here in some pretty rough areas and never been mugged or attacked... I must be lucky or something.

Woah, woah, woah. I was not criticizing anyone. Especially not someone who could kill me alot faster than I could even scratch him, see I have a way with words. I dont need weapons because people like the way I talk to them, I can be very disarming. Actually just this saturday I stopped a very angry and very drunk man from attacking one of my friends simply by talking to him, I told him that nobody appreciated the fact that he was swearing quite loudly in an area populated mostly by the elderly and that it wouldnt do anyone any good to fight... that worked perfectly until my friend started saying "yeah, yeah!". :D
Drop a few compliments here and there and people probably wont smash your face into the ground... oh and carrying any kind of blade or fire arm is illegal here too.

I carry around a pocket knife or two, but not for self defense. I carry them around for practical reasons, you never know when one of those things could come in handy. Now if I was being attacked by someone who had full intention to kill me, I might consider using it for self defense.

I don't like it either, but when push comes to shove, survival is the top priority. I won't charge into a battle when I can get away, but I won't get caught in that situation where I can't escape or where I could stop a lunatic from doing something the pieces of paper our legislative bodies generate never stop. Bullets go through paper, no law protects anyone, only those that who wouldn't do that sort of thing in the first place.

I'm a non-interventionist, right libertarian. My political philosophy is "I leave you alone, you leave me alone". Still, I recognize that there are those out there who simply chose to not leave me alone and, instead of living life as a victim of others, I'll hit back and hit back with the biggest thing I have with me at the time.

You can't face down thugs and villains with nice words and appealing to their good sides, they don't have them. They're bad people for a reason and appealing to their civility or pointing at a law is outright pointless to this class of individual.

I grew up in East Los Angeles, which is not exactly a nice place either. I've got the street smarts and know enough about criminal behavior to outright avoid it. It all falls down to motive, opportunity and desire. I can't do anything about the motive, but I can impact the other two. Opportunity by avoiding certain places at certain times (or just certain places) and making myself an undesirable target, both by being armed and other things like not flashing signs of wealth.

Paranoia? Nah, I don't go around afraid. I'm comfortable and for the most part don't think about anything horrible happening and enjoy life. These skills and thinking patterns are just ingrained into me from an early age. Minimize your exposure to crime, minimize your appeal to criminals and maximize your ability to keep yourself safe.

Ultimately, my personal safety trumps everything else. I will kill if I have to, I will maim if I have to and I won't lose any sleep over it if I do. It is something that may be necessary to ensure I can continue my life in the same capacity as before the altercation.

Not everything can be solved by diplomacy. I will paraphrase America's 26th President, Theodore Roosevelt, "Walk softly but carry a big gun."

My goal is to go to my grave without having to pull a weapon in anger, I've already managed 28 years and am still going strong.
Its good to see that you arent the type of person who walks around with the safety off, that kind off person would have told me to "go fuck" or something by now... or at the very least some kind of hippy.
I just naturaly dont care for violence, thats who I am. I would much rather debate, but people get quite angry when you best them in a battle of wits. These are the types that I avoid, but carrying a weapon doesnt make you this kind of person.
