Its good to see that you arent the type of person who walks around with the safety off, that kind off person would have told me to "go fuck" or something by now... or at the very least some kind of hippy.
I just naturaly dont care for violence, thats who I am. I would much rather debate, but people get quite angry when you best them in a battle of wits. These are the types that I avoid, but carrying a weapon doesnt make you this kind of person.
I would never carry a gun if I could trust people. Basically if everyone was non violent I would feel no need to ever be violent myself. As it is violence is sometimes the only defense against hostile actions of others. I am not going to be a person that ends up waiting an hour for the police the one time I really need them. So I will take care of myself. Not to say that I will always rely on my self. I am just prepared to not have to rely on others

There are two kinds of people that carry a weapon. Their are those like me and the other poster who carry only for self defense. I have never purposely shown any of my weapons to anyone but friends. There is never a reason to "flash your piece" that is simply for those individuals that fit into the second catagory.

The ones that carry to feel tough. Those are the ones you have to look out for. The ones that the people who hate guns like to point to and say "this is why gun permits are dangerous you get vigilantes going off half cocked." Not true. I hope to never have to use my gun against a person, however I am prepared to do it if the need ever arises. Almost every person I have meet who carries does it for the first reason.

I think gun safety classes would do a lot more for preventing accidents and unsafe practices then simply trying to legislate people who do not seem to be following the law anyway.

Meaning: Teach people how to properly handle a weapon and a situation where they may need to use one. It does not even take long.

I learned it in the military, and have always had respect for weapons.

Well I never thought I had to, but then a couple of years ago I got mugged. Sounds pretty average right, plenty of people get mugged.
Thing is that I was walking to school. My school is 5 minutes away when walking. 10 seconds of those 5 mintues is through the forest I got mugged in. Also I live in Coquitlam, BC. Its a tiny ass mountain town in Canada. What the hell.
So now I carry a 5 inch folding knife that I clip on to my belt wherever I go.

I live in America, a hotbed of violence in itself, and I live in the areas around Baltimore City, a city perhaps more violent than New York. I always have a knife on hand just in case. I have also learned basic defense moves to protect myself. These include bone manipulation.

Yes. For example, when in the Army, I carried a rifle like any other soldier, but my particular duties meant that it was unlikely I'd be pressed into an attack (unless the situation were quite desperate I suppose).

I have, at times carried a handgun outside of government work, but I do so rarely. The problem is, my own handgun (Springfield XD .40 Sub-Compact) is difficult to actually conceal, and as such I have to carry it in the small of my back. If you've never done it, rest assured it's impossible to sit comfortably with such a weapon wedged there. Basically, for me to carry my weapon around I have to be doing something where I feel my guarnteed discomfort is outweighed by my percieved personal risk, and that doesn't happen often (my life may not be exciting enough).

No I don't carry any weapons for self defence, thats illegal in my state.

I am looking at getting a Leartherman pocket knife, not a multi-tool, for use at work. Although it does have a carabiner (i do rock-climbing as well!) and a bottle opener (essential!).

Not even sure that I'd think of pulling a pissy little knife like that even to scare someone.
If I had a good sized butterfly knife though, well that would scare someone just with opening it fast enough.

I live in Las Vegas, 4th most dangerous city in the US. And as I said I have personal experiance.
Vegas is harsh, i dont even go down to the strip without a knife, i usually go with others, but im the biggest guy usually, so people assume i would take the attacker down
I used to live on D Street. It just wasn't safe to be outside after dark there.
i live in a nicer part of town, and i only go to the bad parts of town when i have to, best way to minimize the chance of anything happening is to avoid the chance

Really an XD sub is difficult to carry? I can carry a Glock 32 with an IWB holster and I don't even know its there. SOB carrying is uncomfortable not to mention hard to reach.

I usually carry a CZ 75 B in my truck.
Woo, a fellow CZ user! Although mine's in .40.

OT, I lived in a high-crime area. My car got broken into 3 or 4 times (nearly stolen once) in the span of two years. I would rather not be unarmed if I surprise the thief in the act, or if someone tries to carjack me (like they did my dad in a Safeway parking lot when I was a kid.) So I did get my CCW and I do carry my CZ-75B when I have reason to be concerned. It's not often that I do it anymore, but it does bring piece of mind. I'll probably get something smaller (CZ-40P or P-06) in the future, but I don't expect to carry it more. Plus I'm still a college student, so taking it with me to campus isn't an option.

I did also carry a 4-inch pocketknife, but that was more for utilitarian purposes. And I seem to have lost it somewhere. :(

Unfortunately, because of my slim stature, I cannot possibly carry a weapon on my side and hope to conceal it (even the sub compact is tall enough to be noticable in most attire). The front waist carry methold is one option I've considered in the past but for whatever reason I'm not entirely comfortable with the prospect of pointing a weapon at my junk :p. Shoulder is almost certainly best combination of comfort, ease of access and concealment, but such a choice requires you wear a jacket of some sort at all times if you want to continue concealing.

Really, if I had it all to do again, I would choose an even smaller weapon for the purpose of concealed carry, but I'm not terribly willing to make such a purchase anytime soon.

This type of thinking gets you killed.

May I recommend everyone read Put 'Em Down, Take 'Em Out, Knife Fighting Techniques from Fulsom State Prison, and get those very dangerous movie style ideas of a knife fight out of your head, k?

Another good read is Cheap Shots, Ambushes, and Other Lessons by Marc MacYoung.

I always get a little squirrely when I read these sort of threads and see posts from people that carry knives but have their heads full of shit they see in the movies.

Personally, I used to carry a switchblade back in my young and dumb days, but I lost the damn thing somewhere so I'm finding a replacement, I'm probably going to get a KARBAR TDI Knife. Been reading a lot of good stuff about them, and I'd like to check one out.

I have a XDm 9mm but it's a bit too bulky for daily carry. I'm shopping about for a compact pistol if anyone has some recommendations.

Never needed to, and I probably never will. If you want to fight like a man, fight with your hands.

I live in the UK, have for 29 years and have never needed a weapon. I've used my jiu jitsu but thats about it. No ones above getting choked out.

I will never carry a weapon. The chance of being caught with a weapon, being charged and losing my job is far higher than me using a weapon to defend myself. Most of the people on the street I can out fight or out run. I'm never worried, even in the dark. Peoples fear of crime is much higher than their actual risk of becoming a victim. Its a paranoid society.

EDIT: Actually I lived in Texas for two and a half years out of that 29. Now that is a scary place. I figured it was a bit late to carry a gun as all of the natives had been shooting since they could walk. It wouldn't improve my chances.
