Does anyone fully agree with Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw's views on games? I do, but I hear a lot about fanboys complaining.
You must live an awful dull life if you don't like any games. I don't fully agree with him because a lot of the games he claimed to hate I loved. I know that he likes some games, (Portal, Silent Hill 2, Fatasy World Dizzy, etc.) but he's a critic. He's supposed to rip it apart and search for the faults even if he enjoyed it. He also is a comedian, so he has to be funny every week as well.

He generally has valid and intelligent points, but nobodies ever perfect. He does occasionally talk out of his ass a bit, but that has been rare in my opinion. I'd generally trust his opinion 20x more than the more mainstream reviewers, but it's not as if I'd never buy a game he said was crap.

Edit: Just remembered, I would say that you really need to be able to form your own opinions to get anything out of his reviews. As many people have said if you only bought games he said were good then you would own VERY few games. The point of his reviews is to hear what the absolute worst parts about the game are, and then form your own opinion based on that.

Generally I'd say that if the things Yahtzee talks about in his reviews don't seem like huge faults to you, then go ahead and buy it, cause generally everything else is great and you will love the game.

Even when he trashes games I like I can't say any of his comments are unfounded. In fact I agree with most of them. Even after...what is it, 4 years now?...Yahtzee is still very refreshing in an industry that hails every half decent overly hyped "cinematic experience" as a masterpiece.

And anyway, it's not like he hates every game he reviews. At least a third of his videos go "I really enjoyed this game. Now here's what sucked about it."

His rhetoric is used from the perspective of someone who seems gaming as an imperfection along a route; a means to an end of art; the gaming experience, if you will.

The difference between opinion and fact in this case is clear; Yahtzee's slant is of course, in part, that of an entertainer but with a semi-subjective semi-objective view - his opinions of what is 'objective' are in themselves subjective.

Since everyone plays games for different reasons and has different expectations then Yahtzee's observations must be taken as what they are, and any further interpretations are one's own reflections.

Anyone who changes their opinion of a game drastically after watching an episode of Zero Punctuation clearly has no pre-prepared slant towards said game and so bear little to no significance in such an issue.

Sorry for the overly in-depth analysis but my University course just ended and I have a date to impress on Saturday. Heh.

The fact that Halo ODST got all around good reviews is proof enough that we need a person like Yahtzee.

The amount of people slavering at Ben's feet is absolutely sickening.

I don't think he genuinely wants to be "agreed with", it's just a form of humour. If you seriously give his reviews any weight in what games you purchase your library must be pretty empty.

Some games I've agreed on, others we've had completely opposite views. It depends on the game.

I just want to point out Option 4 of your poll here: I have no idea who this "Ben 'Yahtzee' Croshaw" because I'm daft.

...and you call us fanboys?

OT: No, I don't. He's clever and is capable of remarkable insight, but I tend to take a more charitable view of games than he does, being as I go into a game looking to enjoy myself rather than rip it several extraneous new ones for the enjoyment of an audience. The man is vicious because we demand viciousness of him...honestly, I'm not even entirely convinced that he agrees with himself all of the time.

Dude he is a game CRITIC. Not a reviewer, he isn't here to sell the damn things, only to inform us of the let downs, oh and to present it in a manner that is appealing to viewers, thus the humour.

Personally, I watch Yahtzee for a laugh, even if he did insult Guitar Hero, I don't care, I laughed, then watched the next one. I think you have had your favourite game insulted or something like that, and you didn't like it, if not, fair enough.

What it is with me, I just accept the fact that he hates 99% of the games he plays. I just look at his complaints, and decide for myself if the factors he loathes will actually prevent me from playing a game, instead of crying that he doesn't like the game that I like.

*Checks watch* Oh, it's been a whole day since someone made this thread. Bout time.
OT: He hits critical points in games, and I judge it by how badly he rips into it. If it was harsh, but he throws in a few advantages the game has, then it's probably good. If he is harsh, without any advantages, then it probably won't be great. I never take him to his word, however, and prefer to play the game myself before yaying or naying it.

Primary purpose is entertainment, yes, although IMO he hasn't been as entertaining lately. Perhaps being forced to review a torrent of blockbuster games has blunted his snark. His complaint about Conviction (guns blazing gameplay? Uh...having played the game, NO) was incredibly weak tea.

The problem with taking him seriously is that for every 3 parts honest criticism there seems to be one part dishonest objection. Perhaps that is an exaggeration, but it's sad that he feels compelled to stretch the truth so often to get a rise out of us.

And enough with the toilet shock jockery.

im not a fanboy, yes you are... meh people have to take into consideration that the purpose of his reviews are to expose the games flaws which other critics might not do. i still get a game and am generally happy with it like bfbc2 so it doesn't really matter to me his reviews show you whats wrong with games in a hilariously over the top fashion, more power to em.
