Hell no they won't, they're gonna be fed on a healthy balance of rock n roll and classical! Billy Fury followed up by a dose of Chopin!

I would let them listen to it, not todays mainstream crap but more of the underground stuff.

Hilltop Hoods
Buck 65
Lupe Fiasco
stuff like that.

Now i know those are all rappers (please tell me i spelled that right) but i dont know any hip hop songs or artists. ive probably heard them but i dont know what genra they belong to.

But personaly i listen to Punk Rock mostly, i listen to everything and everything but i think the biggest precentage of what i listen to is punk.

[small]dont judge me just because im different.[/small]

I always thought that rap was mindless and shallow, but I appreciate hip hop. I've heard some of Mike Shonoda's stuff and it's great. I'd definitely be up for more stuff like that.
What exactly is the difference between rap and hip hop?

Inside the community, it's always been known that rap is merely a vocal technique while hip hop is a style of music, but not the only style, where raps are often found.
I just treat hip hop like it's nu metal and rap like it's hardcore metal. The former is good most of the time and has a bit of depth to it and the latter is shallow most of the time with a few exceptions. I'm not sure how to determine the differences in any other way.

I find it funny how most people here think that all rap is violent and only talks about bitches and hoes. Just like people think that all cartoons are for kids.
People , there are exceptions to EVERYTHING.
I mostly only listen to Lupe Fiasco, RZA and Eminem as far as rap goes. Granted Eminem can be a little iffy but a lot of his songs are fun.

It's obvious to me that MOST of you on this forum know nothing about Hip-Hop, Rap, or the differences between the 2. Hip-hop is about creativity....the ability to tell a story or deliver a message, be it positive or negative, while entertaining & moving the crowd is just ONE part of hip-hop. Any moron can string words together that rhyme...just look at Fred Durst. No one here would judge Punk or Rock simply by what they hear from Limp Biskit or Pennywise, so why do it with Hip-hop? Use that 4 lbs. of grey matter lodged inside your skull and actually RESEARCH hip-hop, instead of judging it by the standards of a few talentless "rappers". 99% of the crap you hear on the radio is perpetuated by record company fatcats that are only interested in bottom-line economics rather than content & creativity. Please, those of you on this forum that know about real hip-hop, educate the ignorant masses on here that claim "I hate rap/hip-hop", yet own every album from Eminem.

P.S. - Mike Shinoda was an MC long before he got with Linkin Park.

I listen to rap and hip hop, why should I deprive my children the same opportunity? I think artists like Jay-Z are extremely talented, despite what others may think, and not all of this music is about drugs/sex/violence. Some is uplifting, and I've actually found inspiration in a number of rap songs.

Maybe it's because I'm a musician, composer, and a producer, but I have absolutely no interest in lyrics. If I want compelling text, I'd read a book. I listen to music for the music.

That's a very interesting argument I've noticed a lot of people tend to make. I played the alto saxophone once upon a time (high school, only 3 years), so I can understand this to a point. While it is true that most rap doesn't use "real" instruments, many people seem to forget - not saying you're one of them - that a great many rap songs can use "real" instruments. I remember my high school days being able replicate many then-popular songs on my saxophone.

Something pretty ironic that many people either fail or don't care to realize is that there are many songs, especially recently, that utilize the mighty guitar to provide some of the melody behind a song, or some other string instrument. Reunited by the Wu-Tang Clan took advantage of the absolute insanity only capable of a violin. Still D.R.E. by Dr. Dre created his melody with a ukulele. D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune) by the immortal Jay-Z featured both a guitar and a soprano saxophone for his songs.

Not saying you're argument is invalid (mostly because you were actually respectable with your rebuttal, I appreciate that :p); just saying that rap beats aren't as simple nor as one-dimensional as the average person believes.
What's wrong with "fake" instruments? In the eyes of classical composers in the 20th century, all instruments are real.

:]
Oh, I misread your post. Sorry about that.

If i ever have any, they'll be forced to listen to it. they can chosoe what they wanna hear themselves, but i'll be damned if i had to put headphones on every time i wanted to ehar something, and i like rap music (the non-gangsta kind) so they would eventually hear it when i put it on for my own sake.

I agree entirely, and I hate to see people dismiss Hip Hop as a whole because what they hear on the TV is shit. Everything on TV is shit, it's all made for money. I wouldn't, however, say all Rock is shit though because I overheard a Nickelback track.

It's funny how people immediately thought of people like Lil' Wayne, Soulja Boy etc when I mentioned Hip Hop. I respect the people who mentioned artists such as Buck 65, Sage Francis, Atmosphere etc in this thread because they've actually looked under the surface of mainstream rap.
