I was just looking up Christmas on wikipedia and I came across some thing mentioning that in America it's apparently illegal to call a tree Christmas Tree and has to be called some thing on the lines of Holiday tree. I don't know if this is 100% true nor did I %100 understand the reason as to why, I was wondering if some one would kindly explain this to me. This is not meant to cause any flaming nor is the question meant to be bashing or attacking America nor do I want to see America Bashing of any kind this is simply me being curious and I would normally research this but I would rather get answers from fellow forum dwellers along with finding out your opinions or take on this matter.

I don't believe that it's illegal to call a Christmas tree a Christmas tree in America and I may have just misinterpreted what I was reading but from what I've read it seems to be frowned upon.

Again this is no attempt at bashing or offending any one just to create an interesting discussion along with satisfying my curiosity. I don't want to see and bashing or flaming please... keep it clean.

Also as a sub question I have added a poll asking which do you call your tree, do you consider it a Holiday tree or a Christmas Tree.

I doubt it's illegal.

And it's a Christmas tree for me, owing to it being a tree that I get at Christmas time.

It is and always should be a Christmas Tree.
I mean, if you don't celebrate the holiday, then people shouldn't say it offends them when others do, you know?

It's a Christmas tree. although I hate christians being arrogant about it, the holiday is called Christmas and therefore the tree you decorate specifically for that holiday is a Christmas Tree!
People need to stop getting offended so easily, if you really have a problem with christmas, don't celebrate it, don't try to call it something else just because it makes you feel like you're being christian or something...

Wait, that's apparently illegal? In the USA? (I refuse to call the US 'America', since America is the term for the two continents (including North America and South America), not the country...) Surely that's more likely in the UK with all the political correctness over here. Anyway, I call it a Christmas Tree, always have, always will. Screw the council for telling me not to 'offend' non-Christians....

[small](Note that I have no problem with non-Christians, I just don't see why we need to avoid 'offending' them when very few, if any, non-Christians take offence at such things anyway...)[/small]

I'm in Scotland, and most people I know here tend to just call it a tree.

Some examples:
"I've got my tree up already, how about you?"

"We really need to go out and get a new tree at the weekend."

You get the idea.

Well, if it's illegal the 12 different vendors in Home Depot parking lots and public schools that I pass on my way to and from work all need to change their signs. Everyone advertises them as Christmas trees. I've never heard of a holiday tree (though I have family who've gotten Hanukkah bushes before). Not being religious myself, though, I'm just going to pick up a Festivus pole and leave the mess of needles to folks with more patience than me.

They're likely referring to public places, such as office buildings, the post office, schools, and whatnot. You can't have a "Christmas" tree up there because Christmas is a religious holiday and you can't be shown as expressing a religious belief because it's discriminatory. My high school, for example, used to put up a tree every year, and we'd collect food and gifts for local needy families underneath it. Then folks bitched because they didn't celebrate Christmas and didn't feel they should have the holiday "forced" upon them.

Holiday tree?
Really? That is the most stupidly absurd thing I've ever heard...

It's obviously a christmas tree.

Well I all honesty I'm a Christian-turned-Agnostic I'm not very religious at all, neither is the lot of my family yet we still put one up and celebrate Christmas and name it a Christmas tree.

I don't get the whole 'offending' part neither, if I want to hang a tree up or sing Christmas carols I should be allowed to do so. I can't see why any one Jewish or Muslim would be offended by it, if it's not part of their religion then do not celebrate it, most of us here aren't offended by them when they celebrate their holidays in fact a good amount of us couldn't care less.

At my university, most departments have a Christmas tree and it doesn't seem to piss anybody off, regardless of religion or background. I hate it when local councils assume people of different ethnicities feel put out by everything. Some of my friends don't celebrate christmas and they think all this political correctness is stupid, that its just a cynical ploy by politicians to get people to vote for them.
Holiday tree my arse.

I remember hearing about this and got irritated because (and please correct me if I'm wrong) I don't think anyone else has a tree for the holidays. I think they wanted to change it because they wanted to be politically correct or some bs. But it was quite awhile back.
