The police are vital to a functioning society, for without them there would be no fear from disobeying the law. Sure, there's a few crooked cops, but for the most part, they're here to protect and serve, and they deserve respect.

Like all people in positions of authority, there are good ones and bad ones. Without the police, I would be one of the few people who would be able to get by just fine... but I prefer not having to kill people on a regular basis, so put me down for "Important for keeping order".

I have respect for the Police. In the UK they are actually forbidden by law to go on strike, so they really do have a thankless job and they can't do anything about crappy pay really (since in the UK they cannot strike).
What an incredibly pointless law, if the police were to go on strike, who would be around to arrest them?

OT: I haven't came into contact with many cops, but the ones that I have always seemed like genuinely good people. Sometimes they can be overzealous, and there will always be some who abuse their position, but overall I greatly respect the police.

Trained cops with common sense and reasoning = Great. They're important in keeping this world from utter chaos.

Shitty, uneducated, arrogant, power-tripping, ignorant cops with shit training = Terrible, and the reason why law enforcement as a whole is frowned about by a lot of people.

Necessary for keeping order and all that, but the Met expecially are little better than thugs with badges.

They were an alright band. I especially liked-

...oh wait, the ACTUAL police. Whoops. Yeah, they're okay, mostly. Some of them have bad attitudes. You know the type. "Gotta make my quota, so let's hassle a guy for the flimsiest reason I can think of." Pffftt..

I've read somewhere that if you were a cop, you'd be corrupt too,
ever hear the proverb: "what would you do if you knew you couldn't fail?"
kind of works like that, because you can do whatever you want since nobody can fuck with you if you're a cop,

Depends on the area they work. I have nothing but respect for metro police.

But coming from a small town, the cops around here are just a bunch of old, stupid assholes with nothing to do but harass teenagers and turn a speeding infraction into a ten-patrol-car traffic obstruction. No respect.

Most cops I believe have good intentions. I just think most of them may be a little naive: they haven't noticed that in Britain, justice itself and the law have not been on speaking terms for quite some time now.

Well, despite the awful reputation the police have around where I live (there have been many high-profile cases of police brutality and incompetence in recent years), I still think they are important for keeping order. The area would be a sty-hole if they did not exist.

Seeing as how I've never been in trouble with them, nor have I ever seen a dirty cop, I can say I like them.
The job they do is necessary.

I believe people who uphold the rules of a corrupt government to be of questionable morality. The fact that there are so many cases of police brutality and policemen abusing their power should be enough for people to advocate for the current system to be changed.

they're normal people with good intentions until a few years in the service, then i think the skin starts to thicken - certainly for city police nypd/metropolitan scales. i've had a few experiences with "bad cops" which turned out ok and equally had great banter with a great many.
as an organisation they have a really hard job and they for the most part do it fairly badly but you can't blame them, it's a logistic nightmare. red tape and policies make things harder.

i wouldn't hesitate to call them if i needed them and i truly believe they'd turn up and try to help.

As an organisation in the country(ies) that I have lived in? Good as a whole, some are excellent others are dodgy and a tiny minority are absolutely horrible.

As a career? Don't really love it but there could be worse things.

As a fetish? I prefer nurses.

It's a noble profession, but like all subsets of humanity, it has it's share of dickheads.

All in all, I support 'em.

I never understood hate for the police, other then being sore that you got busted for something or hating authority. Yeah, getting pulled over or arrested for something sucks, but everybody has the same chance if you are doing something illegal. They are doing their job, as you are doing yours.

The world would be a LOT worse off if we didn't have a Police force, despite what people think. If nothing else, people behave more when they know there is an authority figure who will bust you if you do something wrong.

They're an unfortunate necessity. The justice system wouldn't work at all without them, and without a working justice system, it's the stronger over the weaker. Might becomes law.
