States and the monopoly of law & its enforcement is bullshit. Poly-centric law would be so much less corrupt.

In general, I enjoy their services. Its good that they keep order, and that we're not left to marshal law. That and that most of our police force are like commando units and dont fail at catching a guy who's messed up in the head with a machete makes me feel all the safer at night.

My personal police force, well, there's two good ones, and the rest are pigs in every sense of the word. They fail at their job, and I cant wait for the revamp we're getting later this year and seeing all those bastards go. An 80%+ crime rate and over 3 murders a month in a year (statistically, we didnt have 3 murders a month, just 35 in a year) is not acceptable, especially if you're going to say you dont like if I defend myself with my own means.

The concept of law enforcement? Obviously needed.
The current use of it? Often corrupt, brutal, dickish, and utilized for all the wrong reasons.

In the U.S. the type of cop you encounter depends on what state he's in and how much trouble he gets on average. Which I'm sure is typical where ever you go. For example I live in the state of Michigan and the city I live in is pretty devoid of crime so the cops around here are just bored. But the cops you meet that operate in the inner cities of Detroit are pretty toughened up. Also being a cop is tough, on a daily basis you have to deal with the ugly side of society. It's not a fun job but somebody is doing it and I'm thankful for that.

Would be?

It was not and is not.

I have respect for the Police. In the UK they are actually forbidden by law to go on strike, so they really do have a thankless job and they can't do anything about crappy pay really (since in the UK they cannot strike).
What an incredibly pointless law, if the police were to go on strike, who would be around to arrest them?
-The Army
-Military Police
-Other police not on strike
-The threat of instant unemployment

Fuck the police.
Why doesn't the government train US to police OURSELVES?
I can't believe you're asking that question seriously. Off the top of my head: because their's no way to ensure Due Process or The Rule Of Law in an anarchic policing system, it has led and leads to great levels of corruption and false denunciations, and results in warlord-like political structures appearing.

By making the people the police, you'd be removing all checks and balances on them.

And besides, the people denounced eachother in Nazi Germany and in 1984. Surely you'd hate to live in such a dystopia?

I would say they vary significantly by region, but they're pretty important around here.

They're good people doing an unpopular but important job. I respect them, I just hate it when they enforce the law on me.

the cops in Winnipeg have a tendency towards unnecessary violence, so I'm not a big fan of them.

It's on a person-by-person basis really, but way too many cops in my area are huge racists.

For example. My best friend (who is black) and I in college used to meet at a sushi place every Wednesday that was equidistant (about a half mile) from both of our apartments. We had just got done eating there with some girls and went back to our respective homes, he on his bike. As he's pulling up to his place, some cops pull up and point a gun at him (!!) and ask if he's just robbed the Little Cricket (which is a small convenience store chain usually placed in poor areas). He's terrified and tells them that he hasn't and he's just getting back from a sushi place. One cop asks him about his bandana, noting the colors. He responds, "This? This is a SCARF!!!" (he dresses like a guy straight out of an Burberry catalog). At this point the cops start telling him to watch his mouth, but he refuses and says "I see what's going on here" (implying he's been profiled) and walks away. The cops let him go. Pulling a gun in a guys face just like that? I think you should lose your job and maybe even be charged yourself.

I've even seen some of my friends become cops and then start acting overtly racist, and trying to justify it. That tells me its just part of the police culture here (I'm from Charleston, SC. I swear race issues aren't that bad overall here). I'm pretty sure one of them even pulled a line straight from Matt Dillon's character in Clash.

The good cops I know are actually older ones. I have other cop friends who sell fake IDs and are likely guilty of police brutality. Another black friend of mine became a cop and then quit after only a few months (and now yells "Fuck the police!" out of car windows). I don't know about other places, but there's definitely something very wrong here.

Police officers have a rather taxing job. Some of the stories I've heard through various people makes me wonder how they keep their sanity at night. Keep in mind they have to put up with ignorant, uninformed human beings at the bottom of the barrel who put their pain and suffering above the safety of others. This is why they are essential.

With that being said, some police officers can and are "bad people" to a certain extent. But within the same token, a good amount of former thieves and criminals became police officers. What better place to operate in preventing what you used to know best?

dude, i heard from a guy i work with who has a degree in psychology both criminals and law enforcement are wired the exact same way

I doubt that the country would send the army at police officers refusing to work, and I similarly doubt that military police would do so. They're not exactly going to charge into all of the cops' homes and jail them, that would be pretty counter-productive to getting them back, unless it was a small strike I suppose. Instant unemployment is also counter-productive to trying to get police back on the streets. I think if the police were angry and organised enough to perform a large strike, the government would pretty much be forced to give in, or accept anarchy.

Of course I don't think the police are paid/treated so badly that this would be likely to happen, fortunately.

I feel guilty around them. Like they'll find something about the way I'm walking and throw me in jail for it. "Chewing gum in public place, eh? TEN YEARS!"

It's completely ridiculous. Probably my mum's fault, I've noticed any time my young nephew does any thing slightly mischievous she's always 'STOP THAT OR THE POLICE WILL COME LOCK YOU UP!' I will have gotten the same treatment, no doubt.

My uncle in the law enforcement achieved a "hero"-certificate and a reward for saveing a woman from a house which her husband was about to light on fire.
Now tell me why the hell i should hate people like that?
It's disgusting that people "hate" the police. sure some are corrupt and being dicks but that happens alot of other places.

What i dislike however is politicians... that's for another time

They're people like you and me, not perfect and not here sent by the devil.

If you say fuck the police you're an ignorant hate-filled goon who stereotypes the entire job by the minority of assholes that work there. And chances are, you'll be calling them up when your getting robbed and you'll be the one eating your words.

Ragy post? Sure but I've had it with people who generalize people everywhere because of the minority of issues. They do more good than harm (in most areas I'd assume) so yeah. FFFFF
