We don't know enough about either console to be able to predict sales just yet. I will say that I don't think Xbox One's licensing system and connectivity requirements will hurt its sales much.

Suffice to say, if The Escapist represented the average consumer, Microsoft would be screwed. :
IF, and ONLY IF the average Escapist sticks to their word regarding not buying it. It's fairly common in gaming to scream "Boycott" and then buy it quietly anyway.

My friend's list if full of such hypocrites regarding Call of Duty, Mass Effect, and Dragon Age.

For this reason alone, I think the Xbone will sell well.
That could partially be due to the fact that there aren't substitutes for those games. If you want to play Dragon Age, well you've got to suck it up and buy Dragon Age. If you want to game on a console, lucky for you there are two of them (three if you are considering a Wii U).

Of course, you might have people in the situation where all their friends have Xbones, and to play with them you need to get one. In that case, there are no substitutes.

So that might make it slightly different. I dunno.

In any case, consumers are fickle beasts.

You know only about 1/3 of the Xbox 360s sold were sold in the US right?
You might have got your stats mixed up. I believe roughly 1/3 of PS3s were sold in the States, because of its much larger popularity in Japan. The Xbox 360 did the opposite.

I really can't help but wonder who's this console aimed at if not the rich? And not just the rich, but rich that have the time and energy to deal with all the restrictions like mandatory installs.

Hardcore gamers are furious, casual gamers won't be happy to find out that they can no longer just pop the disc in and play so they'll sell it once they realize it's not worth the trouble, poor people without good internet or without an HDTV can't even use it. And Microsoft hopes to sell 400 million units of this thing? Either they have an insane marketing strategy or they simply are insane.

Of course it will sell - it's a fucking Xbox. 90% of the people will buy it simply because it says "Xbox" on it, not knowing or caring about the DRM, and the remaining 10% will be the "Well my friend has one so even though I don't like the DRM I got one to play with him" crowd.

I don't think it will sell as well as either PS4 or Xbox 360 but it will sell more than it deserves.

People on this site are gamers (obviously) so will not like the way the XO is going, but Microsoft is aiming at a huge demographic and I wouldn't be surprised if it outsold the PS4, which isn't really aiming for any demographic.

This.
The sad truth is that Microsoft has brand loyalty on its side, meaning that their accursed new console will sell like hotcakes, regardless of all the bad press they're getting and the new direction they're taking. I'm hoping that it will flop in Europe, since the majority of features are USA exclusive, but American sales are going to be indubitably high.
That said, I hope I'm wrong and consumers notice what a piece of trash it is and not buy it.

You sure about that? So far Sony has shown support for hardcore gamers, casual gamers, indie developers and f2p developers which means they even care about f2p gamers. And they've done that without trying to stomp on their customers. Microsoft on the other hand wants everybody to buy their console without giving any demographic a valid reason to buy it and all the reasons in the world not to buy it.

The gaming industry should remind itself that they owe their success to the consumers. It became a billion dollar industry without resorting to all the shit that Microsoft is trying to pull. It's funny how the publishers don't want to risk making different and unique games, but everyone is willing to risk the entire billion dollar industry by trying to control the consumer base. For the sake of us all, I hope they fail miserably.

I'm actually scared to find out. I think it will sell a decent amount at the beginning since it seems so many people buy on impulse, especially on what has worked for them before. But then (hopefully then) there will be an aggressive backlash like with SimCity 5.

In relative terms (relative to 360 and PS4): No
In absolute terms: Who knows. I can't predict the future, can you? Who can? We need to find ourselves [small]the guy or girl who can, y'know[/small]...

It will sell well, but mainly due to people who always buy the "must have" thing, and those who don't visit gaming websites or watch things such as E3 and other expo's (in other words, people who either don't know or care about it's many flaws). I am sure many gamers such as those who visit this website will buy it as well, but considerably less than those who bought the 360.

Unless the PS4 is good enough to convert a significant amount of people. But in my circle of friends at least, it's still widely believed that the online capabilities are terrible, so Sony really need to start advertising the qualities of the PSN a lot more. As well as get some exclusives that cater to the largest demographic.

24 hour internet checks (or 1 hour if on a different Xbox) is the deal breaker, that and no second hand games without large paywalls.

I mean, seriously...You are "required" to check-in constantly otherwise you can't even play single player? That's complete bullshit and there's no good excuse for such a move.
It's pretty much the epitome of "we don't trust you, you must prove you're not a thief to us before we give you permission to play the games you paid for.

Also, a camera being alway-on and possibly monitoring your every move is probably going to see some legal action taken against it. I don't care what the official statement from Microsoft is about how much they care about privacy because the only guarantee of privacy is being able to disconnect the bloody thing and put it in the cupboard, which if you did the entire console would brick up.

I think it will at the very least meet expectations. You have a combination involved here. There's a (very) large group of people who don't read gaming websites or visit forums, and parents will will buy little Johnny the X1 because he had a 360. They're in for a surprise when they see the red tape/restrictions they didn't know about, but it's a lot of sales. Also, there's people that are hardcore into Halo/Gears/Fable, or want to carry over their gamertag/score from the 360. They'll cave regardless, even if a daily spanking with a splintered wood pizza flipper is required for offline play. There'll also be people who will complain up until day one, when they're in line at launch staring at their shoes.

Microsoft will do fine, and they'll gain a lot of this "living room control" they're after too.

I think it will sell well, but only because the average person is not sensible when it comes to purchasing. The majority will not have bothered learning about it. What I'm more interested in is the return levels. That is always something companies avoid looking at.

I think it'll sell well, only because I have a low opinion of people.
Regardless of whether people acknowledge that it's shit and Microsoft doesn't deserve your time... People are weak and enjoy buying shit they don't want or need for reasons that, yea they have the power to reject the reasons entirely - but it's easier to just fork out a grand for a new console and games.

I'm rather proud of never owning an Apple product; and I'll also be proud to never own an Xbone assuming they don't fix their shit.

If they fix it, I'll happily consider buying it.

i think it'll do ok in sales the US (which is really the only place it has this "hardcore" "XBOX, Fuck Yeah!" thing surrounding it) and bomb everywhere else.

and when i say "ok" even that has some caveats as its possible even the average barely informed middle and lower class buyer will abandon it due to economic considerations.

and i think that's a shitty business plan (especially in this day and age) and they will "lose the next console generation" (although for other reasons i suspect they may be the last days generation of separate games consoles anyway).

on a side note Wii U sales on Amazon.co.uk post XBone reveal went up 800+%...
I kinda agree with you. Coming from my experience everyone (including myself) in Ireland that I know of got an xbox simply because it was cheaper and had better games at the time.

Later on in the generation when Sony's price dropped more people tended to buy a PS3 because of RROD and all the bad press that engendered.

Mind you a lot of non gamers may go for it. It is very gimmicky. And We know that Microsoft will throw money at marketing it.

I would guess with the information we have at the moment initial sales to be about even (with slight leaning towards XBone) and eventually Sony taking over because they suck less with their business practices.

No. 100 million Americans don't have broadband. That's a third of the country that can't buy the xbone as a gaming machine. They've also done pretty well in pissing off gamers. While gamers may be a small part of the market, they can have an effect larger than their size. Gamers are the guys you go to in for advice your office when Christmas is coming and you want to buy a present for your kids. Gamers are the people who work in electronics sections in large stores or in video game shops. If someone comes in wanting to buy a console for their kids, it won't be very hard to steer them towards a PS4 if you're a pissed off gamer.
