Poll: How well do you think the Xbone will sell? (Especially considering DRM scandal)

That largely depends on what you consider ?well?.
Considering the apparent refusal of large quantities of enthusiastic gamers I suspect it to sell worse than the Xbox 360.
The question remains how this will influence the less informed nor as critical mainstream market.
And on a side note just because Sony hasn't said anything about DRM doesn?t necessarily mean that the PS4 won't have it. At this point it just means they dodge the bullet better than MS.
So it also still depends on what the competition has in store.
In any case I also expect them to sell more than the original XBox.

So I just narrowed my choice down to more than 25 million units and less than 76 million units.
Considering this my tip will be roughly 45 million units in 6 years.

Is that ?well? or is that ?bad?? - Id say mediocre.
If this holds true then it would still be a collosal failure for MS.

Well we will see.

Best case scenario: Sony releases PS4 without all the invasive and restrictive nonsense, consumers flock to the console that clearly puts them first, and Microsoft's "publishers first" ideology falls flat on its face (because maintaining greater profitability per sale means nothing when you've got 20% market share).

Worse case scenario: Sony releases PS4 without all the invasive and restrictive nonsense, consumers split between the two consoles because they care more about maintaining a gamerscore than protecting ownership rights, publishers see greater profit per sale with Microsoft and begin to shift support/exclusives to Xbone, and Sony is forced to adopt similarly anti-consumer policies in order to keep pace.

Worst case scenario: the PS4 is exactly the same as the Xbone and we just don't know it yet.

Its entirely dependant on what games it has, and what the pricing is overall. The whole "needs to be online once every 24-hours" thing, the whole second-hand scandal, and the inclusion of a premium online service (AGAIN) has seemed to have put a lot of people off buying the console. However a lot of people are as of yet unconvinced as to the power of the console and are just waiting to see some actual game footage.

So im not sure how it will sell, but im going to say right now that it will probably end up trailing behind the PS4, but only if the prices are somewhat similar.

No, I don't think it will sell well. The only way I see Microsoft even coming close to their numbers is if the NFL ticket thing takes off. Also it depends on the price of the PS4, but there are far too many problems right now with it.

While I won't be buying one, as I am a PC only gamer, I still think people will eat these up. I think too many people either don't care or most likely don't even REALIZE all the stuff that is going on with DRM, online requirements, restricted rights of second sale, not to mention an always on and always connected HD camera, infrared capable no less that sees in the dark, and microphone.

I would never let one in my house but supposedly the pre-orders are "breaking records", if you can believe that coverage, so who knows. I have just little enough faith in the American public to think the new console will sell gangbusters.

I talked to my cousin and he fully acknowledges it sucks...but he is getting one because his friends are getting one and nothing I say can sway him.

I hope the console is good, if only because I don't want my aunt (who is in financial straits) to buy a console day one that will charge for used games (he borrows games off me because they don;t have much money)
Thats pretty sad, maybe if she's in such bad financial shape she should consider not buying a new console day one however, not trying to be a dick mate but it might be a good idea for that money to be used elsewhere :/.

Conversely everyone I know who has thus far been a big xbox supporter has said fuck it, and decided to bet on the PS4 or a PC. I'll be sticking to avoiding the Xbox next gen purely because it's never managed to really appeal to me, Halo alone cannot justify a platform purchase. That's why my 360 is in pieces and used as coasters.

OT: I think it will do pretty well in the US, it'll fail and die in Japan and the rest of Asia, and in Europe Xbox has never been as huge as it seems anyway, except in the UK. And since in the UK a lot of it's features aren't available and a lot of what they've shown off will probably be a PS4 and PC game too, I think it'll do okay with the people who buy 4 AAA gamess a year (FIFA, COD, AssCreed, maybe Battlefield), but that's also not sustainable for Microsoft. The PS4 will do better among the enthusiasts such as myself who buy a minimum of around 10 games a year and discuss games on forums like the losers we are.

It is really too early to tell.

I live in Germany. Here game consoles are very popular, but most people who buy one do so for their children or are generally not that interested in gaming, like people are on this site. They may not even be aware that there is such a thing as DRM and don't understand the fully implications of an always-on-console. To them a console is just a thing to play games on.

I think that these people could end up very offended, once they bring their console home and discover the fine print.

I brought up my nationality, because a lot of the features that the Xbone advertises, to sugar over the Evil, are related to Television. And the problem is that Television in the USA works completely different, especially different from parts of europe.

For example, that whole NFL-Stuff will be utterly pointless outside the USA, since almost nobody in the rest of the world cares for american Football.

It'll sell because of idiots who just want it for stupid reasons like:-

Parents who get it for their twelve year old so he can play Modern warfare on it, so they can ignore the little shit for a bit.

Meat heads will buy it for the Fifa games and play Fifa exclusively online.

People who have done no research into it and buy it just because xbox.

Yes, it will, at least in the first week or two, because most people don't follow the news/don't like changes/don't care about facts and rumors about Xbone. Although, I am not sure about what will happen in a month after launch.

It will sell undeservedly well. Like it or not, the strength of the Xbox brand is strong enough to overcome any pre-release criticism from the hardcore gaming crowd, whom are ultimately a minority.

It will most likely bomb in Japan, but that's to be expected. The Xbox and the Japanese gaming market have never got on well.

I think people can smell B.S. Having the kinect forced on consumers is a very "microsoft" thing to do and maybe if they can find a good use for the kinect and get people recommending it to their friends, then maybe their console will sell. If they keep the kinect the same as it is now and i will use Steel Battalion as my example, people who bought it will be returning it. I think this gaming generation people will invest in their gaming PC or mac more than ever. Most games come out for all systems anyways now, and i can still use my 360 controller with my computer, the xBone can't even do that!!!

well here in the UK the xbox one has already broken pre order records at Blockbusters so that may be some indication

I think it will sell well, but only because the average person is not sensible when it comes to purchasing. The majority will not have bothered learning about it. What I'm more interested in is the return levels. That is always something companies avoid looking at.
I'm especially waiting to see what happens when clueless parents buy it for kids and return it a few days later because "what's with needing to be on the internet? and no used games?"

I'm also wondering how many will be resold pretty soon after release, so that people will buy second hand (ha ha!) consoles rather than new ones.

About 40-60% as well as the Xbox 360 did. Mostly because a lot of console players don't have that good of an internet connection and partly because Microsoft is trying to sell something with THAT many restrictions to a place that touts itself as the freest country in the world.

I'm sure that the Xbone will do alright within its first week, but I can only see sales tanking once the non-gaming mainstream gets its hands on the unfavorable details.

If Sony can capitalize (and it looks like they are), then I think Xbone will do poorly out the gate. The people that don't know a lot about consoles usually ask for advice/check online (at least I would hope they do) and would see all this negativity and steer clear. Those of us in the know, already know to steer clear.

At this point, unless Microsoft pulls some clever trick outta their sleeve, only Microsoft fanboys/hardcore exclusive lovers (looking at you Halo) will be buying Xbone at release.
