Anyone sick of this? Anyone sick of people using "2" as a substitute for "to," as well as other substitutes like "u" and "ur"? I'm not talking about web acronyms like "lol" or "brb," (I use those too) but just the people who even flat out claim that just because they're on the internet, no spelling and grammar rules apply.

Recently, I had an encounter on Team Fortress 2 with some kid who pretty much thought he was cool, and thought he was a great troll, but he couldn't spell or type anything grammatically correct to save his life, which I pointed out; which then lead him to reply with the excuse: "dis is tha internet, not scool" or something like that.

What with the internet becoming more and more a part of our daily lives, and even going into our school life; I feel like if this excuse becomes the norm, it's only just going to get worse for them, and it's downright insulting to those who don't use this as an excuse for misspellings.

I try but I am dyslexic so sometimes I mess up. However I don't mind 'u' being used but I never understood 'teh' as its the same amount of letters to type :/.

Seriously, who came up with the idea that spelling and grammar doesn't apply to the internet? Nobody's gonna understand what your saying if you don't. I had no idea what the title said besides "mild rant".

If it's in (most, with exception of slower paced games like Minecraft) games I don't mind so much, but I don't like it on forums. It looks like you don't really care, so why should anyone else?

I always make a point to spell correctly but sometimes I mess up. I also make sure I never never use "u" instead of "you" or "teh" in stead of "the".

The internet should be like Sanctum where when you type something, Microsoft Sam repeats it back to you so that you know precisely how stupid you sound.

But then people would spam JOHNMADDENJOHNMADDENCHEESECHEESEROLFROLFROLFROLFROLFCOPTER

The internet is full of people doing all sorts of things for all sorts of reasons.

Some people are on it to procrastinate, others are on it to relax, some want to talk seriously (like on this site) and others just want to goof off.

If you are goofing off do you really want to use full and proper grammar, then proof read it to make sure it's perfect? No. Plus it's so much quicker to type out "ur" instead of "you're".

With technology these days waiting 30 seconds for a page to load is out of the question but you want my posts to have care and precision, which take time? It's a little back-ass-wards, to me anyway.

I shall put a little thought in to it so the mods don't get mad at me and so all the grammar nazi's on this site don't start raining pure hate down on me.

If it's in somewhere like this where you can check your message over then it's nice to have a bit of structure and spelling/grammar in your post, but if it's on a game and you just want to type a quick message, as long as you get the message across you can make a few mistakes. Just as long as it's understandable and you don't have to put effort in to know what they're trying to say.

I generally spell shit correctly but I don't expect everyone to, especially on the internet. I imagine some people don't see the point, or can't be arsed, or don't type very quick, or don't speak English as their first language. I'd expect people to type properly even less on a fast paced game like TF2, every second you're stood still typing is another second you're exposing yourself. It's like on LoL and DoTA, I don't really type that great on them because it's much easier to just type "brb shop grp mid and push". It says the exact same thing as a full grammatically correct sentence would, but it's just easier and quicker to communicate it like that.

Obviously, I don't really give a shit how people type.

It's no different than how most ppl rarely use proper grammar when talking in an informal setting.

I always try to spell correctly and use the correct grammar and punctuation (I do occasionally make mistakes, because English was always one of my worst subjects) I find that the more you correctly spell the easier it is for you to spell any words you wish to use (Whilst also giving you a vastly increased vocabulary)

Also using the abbreviated words it can cause repercussions such as the inability to be taken seriously in an education/work environment due to constantly slipping in the abbreiviations without realising it into any written work.

That said it does make sense to use abbreviations in certain circumstances, such as if you need to type quickly (Can happen often in games, as well as in some other situations) or if you have a limited number of characters to use (Such as texting, I have a 160 character limit, which I reach on most of my texts, I also have to lead into completing what I have to say in the next text... I don't have unlimited texts though)

I've never used abbreviations enough for it to become a standard part of my typography, so everything's written intelligibly, hopefully.

Admittedly, my grammar on forums isn't exactly standard, but it utilises standard grammatical rules as I understood them when I was younger in order to reflect the patterns of my written speech. You'll see a comma wherever I'd pause in the sentence, for example.

I disagree. Even if you're typing with three fingers like I do, it's really, really not that much quicker. Frankly it'd take me longer to work out which letters I'd have to ignore...

Depends: are we talking online games/trying to get around a character limit, or just people who typ lik dis because they think it's cool? Because the first two are good excuses, the third one not so much. The example you gave was some kid in a round of TF2, and honestly he may have been the smart one in the situation. If you don't have a mic (and I'd assume someone who would bother with the text chat in TF2 does not), taking any more time typing than you need to to get the message across could have very bad consequences. It's why I tend to tell people who trash talk in LoL to shut up and start playing, because it's impossible to both type and play at the same time.

That's you, I often have to fight the urge to just hit "ur", or at least I used to.

I honestly used to type in that text like manner for everything I said and I could read it like plain English, it wasn't a problem.

It's like if I got you to touch type, you would be much slower than you are now with 3 fingers. Then after a month or two of touch typing you will be typing so much faster than you could dream of with 3 fingers, not just 'cos you are using more fingers but 'cos you are used to doing it.

If u frcd urslf 2 type like this thn it wud come naturally 2 u ... I just struggled to write that but 5 or 6 years ago I would have typed it like I am typing this.

I could show you entire email chains of me talking with friends like that.

That kind of makes me sick. You don't learn things in school for use in school. You learn things in school for use everywhere else.
