Neither of those. Blastoise is the best choice.
Absopositively. On the poll I'd say Poliwrath since they are awesome. However try to get Suicune since its awesome. However it is very hard to catch.
Maybe, but if you don't wanna use the legendary ones since they are banned in most tournaments, then Blastoise would be best.

Go for a Quagsire. Good Stats in everything (except Speed) make him a damn tank. My Quagsire's Atk is slightly higher than his Sp.Atk, so you can use both Special and Physical moves without impunity. This mean he can use Ice Beam to counter Grass-type Pokemon...provided they don't KO him in one shot. But this is what the Focus Sash is for.

He can also learn Ice Punch to go with his Atk stat (I think), but he can't learn Avalanche. A shame, too, as he could easily double its attack power every time he uses it due to his damn poor speed.

That, or go with Dragonite.

Poliwrath is pretty awesome but as suggested before me Cloyster is also pretty helpful. Or you could get a Wailord, those things are massive and awesome.

Also, this may help as well. Nice little comparison tool, you can see stats and movesets on the final evos of all water type starts as well as some of the others suggested.

Thats always screwed me over in Tournaments. I've always gotten all of the legendaries I could since I love them. The only Tournaments I've competed in have been friend ones which have a 1 Legendary rule.

Also I just remembered I support Lapras since they awesome.

Nevermind...Try to get a Vaporeon? You can win elemental stones from the bug catching contests in HGSS. Lapras is also spiffy (the Union Cave on Fridays). From your list I voted Poliwrath because he's cool beans.

I'm using a Gyarados and I <3 her. She's a pretty Gyarados. Goes nicely with Typhlosion and Electabuzz :).

Did gold have silver have Lapras? I love Lapras...
I think it did, but it was very well hidden. You know the area where you can find Smeargle.. in, I think, Gold? There should be the cave of unknown nearby, and it has a basement with Lapras.. something like that.
Actually, it Union Cave, only on Fridays.
Oh yeah, that sounds about right. I need to get SS or HG so I can play this again.

Poll: Poliwag

Getting a water pokemon early means choosing one that has great attacks and can learn many other moves easily so that's why I would choose Poliwag as a starter water pokemon if you didn't choose one from the Professor before going on your adventure.

Lapras. I've used one since I beat Morty on Soul Silver and its been brilliant. I'm at the Elite Four and it is kicking booty.

Kingler, because he is bad ass.

He also kicks ass with his left pincer which boasts 10,000 horsepower of crushing force he also eats shellder, thats right, he keeps the Clyoster population in check!

Politoed... Sure, he might not be fighting-type, but he's wicked fast, and he doesn't have the Flying or Psychic weaknesses. A high Spec.Atk rating will be good for moves like Surf or Bubblebeam, or Ice Beam if you get it. Plus, Hypnosis... That move has saved me quite a few times.

I'd recommend Golduck. Its well-rounded stats make it as useful an all-around fighter as it is a straight up Water type. If I've got to go with one of the options given, though, the Poliwag evolutionary family probably isn't a bad choice.

Probably Poliwag etc. Out of curiosity, how do you evolve it into a 'wrath? I forget. Is it just through training? I don't want to bother training one only to find I can't evolve it without doing some trading.

I freakin' hate trade evolutions, I don't know a single other person who plays.

Shelder/cloyster is always a good choice, not very many pokemon learn ice type moves. Ice is also week to fire but water is not, so the major weakness cancels out.If you don't wanna go with that like was said previous garidose isn't bad if you have the time to commit to evolving a magikarp. But of your list Krabby/Kingler is your best choice, I never use the worthless peices of shit but you might :D.

Stay away from tentacool for the love of the flying spagetti monster stay away from that terrible pokemon.
Welcome to the Escapist! Congrats on your first post.

I'd use them, but Cloyster is more of a Special attacker. Good Attack stat, no good physical moves.
Cloyster has that ability to land a 2-5 turn hit into a 5 hit no matter what. Icicle cannon should be fine
SHHH!

[sub]Real reason:

I'm too lazy to keep catching/breeding them until I get the ability. It's already hard enough to get the right natures.

Do you know how long it took me to get an Adamant Technician Scyther?![/sub]
You do have a point. I'm more of the breeding type/masuda method abuser.
i got obsessively good at breeding, i could get you an adamant technician in about 2 minutes.
of course it does help that scyther/scizor are my fave poké...

for physical water, i'd use kabutops. waterfall, dive, aqua jet, take your pick.
