I'm on the fence, but in favor of getting it done. Despite the nearly one-sided responses of this discussion, one thing most people have right is that it's a big deal. Regretable in the long run if I ever change my position on this. I'm about to return to college (art school), and I can't help but wonder if getting it done while in college will alienate myself from the youngins.
First, let me preface by saying that I have several tattoos and piercings, so I generally favor and understand body modification, although I personally am not into the extreme kind, like this.
I'm glad to hear that you've invested a great deal of thought and research into the matter.
Ignore the people saying 'eww, that's gross', 'you'd be making yourself into a freak', etc. etc. This is an aesthetic value, and while I suppose they are entitled to their opinion, it's kind of moot, because if you agreed with them, you would not be considering it. (Frankly, it still completely baffles me that people think such statements are acceptable contributions for a
discussion.)
Don't worry about what the younger students think. You are going back to school for you. I was a 29 year old college freshman and 34 when I graduated, so I know what I'm talking about when I say that yes, it can be kind of weird going to classes with people who aren't even old enough to drink yet, but it also is kind of cool, too. Profs tend to be more receptive to returning students. (And you're probably not going to be the only old fogey in your classes. It's become rather trendy to go back to school.)
Ultimately, if you believe that the procedure is safe, and that there are no long-term mental or physical health risks associated with doing this, I would focus on how it could potentially impact what you want to accomplish in the future. What is your dream job? If you say 'actor' or 'CEO', then I'd have to say it isn't a smart move. If you say 'artist' or 'musician', then you might could get away with it.
I know you say a split tongue isn't that obvious, but since you can't be guaranteed that no one will notice, what is the worst-case scenario? What if you are in an interview for a job (or talking to a professor might be more appropriate), and you're nervous and you lick your lips... and, just by random chance the person notices? What happens if you meet the guy of your dreams, and he really really digs you, but flips out when you kiss and he notices it?
Seriously, this is the kind of thing I'd do only when I was pretty secure in life. I mean, virtually everybody has tattoos these days, but this is something that people could still freak out about. But it's your body, the procedure is not illegal, and so if you choose to do it, I totally support you.
