It's your body, do whatever stupid thing you want too and stop attention-whoring....but then that's the very reason you want to split your tongue.

I can't see any reason why I would give my hard-earned money to someone to cut or stab me.

Ok as someone thats into body modding myself. I have plenty of tattoo's and piercings, for the past eight years my hair has been bright green. Im not saying this to play "look Im cool" but to show that Im not someone that is preaching what they have no idea about.
Whne it come to body mods what you really need to think about is "how easy is it to cover up or undo if it looks like shit or I get sick of it?" as an example I have one stretched piercing that is done to just blow my personal point of no return, and all of my tattoo's are covered by a shirt and tie. This is because I know that some people hate any kind of mod, so for high level meetings my hair is returned to a natural colour, my septum retainer goes in and my ear piercings come out. To any outside viewer Im just a long haired guy with a beard. If any of my mods becaome a big issue in the future they can either come out or erased with a few laser treatments.
Tounge splitting is not so simple. If my septum ring causes people to wince, just imagine what response your tounge may get. While your current boss may be OK with it, will your future employers? What if it becomes a problem with customers? I can assure you that the profit margain will come before your right to self expression.
To make matters worse, while a splitting is reversable, its not simple. You will need surgery that will make quite a mess of your mouth and you may lose some muscle control. Your taste will suffer, and it just looks crap (the repaired tounges not the split ones)

Try to balance the worst case senario against how badly you want it done. I dont mean consider the worst that could happen seriously think it over. Like i say Im all into modding yourself, but even implants can be cut out fairly easily in comparrison.
Your opinion is most welcome here. :) I'm glad that someone in the body mod community is here to chip into the conversation.

I figure this won't be that hard to hide. I mean, how often do you look into a persons mouth. Most likely if they're showing off something in there, saying "ah," or simply razzing you. ;) The only times my attention has been called to the mouth is if there's something shiny or repulsive (yellow teeth) that stands out. The tongue kind of hides back there. :)

As for reversal, you're right about the labors and difficulty behind it. I've tossed the idea around for a few years. Like I mentioned before, it won't be the biggest mistake I've made, should it ever turn into one. :) But if I get it done, I do so with a few years of thought behind it.

I would never, but I think it comes down to personal style. I find it far from attractive, but again there would be a lot of folk who do like it.
I just guess check out all the health benefits/problems that can arise before jumping into it. I'm sure you would have already spending a few years going over it. If you're keen I can only say 'Go for it,' and if you're having second thoughts then, 'hold on to you tongue.'

I don't know why anyone would want to do that to themselves... Wait a year or two then see if you still want to do it.

They say people who are lying as "forked tongued," and when I see somebody with a split tongue I have to wonder if they did it complete out of fashion or if they're aware of this saying and just wanted a good excuse to lie. So you'd be pretty much going through life with that stigma.

That said, I put down "no opinion." Hey, it's your tongue, not the Internet's.

How about this point of view?

You're violating your own body.

You are causing self injury to your body when you tattoo, pierce, split, etc. It's your choice of course.

hi,

First of id like to say that i know some one that split their tonge, they were kinda odd to begin with tho so no major difference to apperance or employability and stuff but it should be considered. Ive been assured by them that it perfectly fine now its healed (like a peircing). I know quite a few people with varios peircings tattoos and body alterations including ritual scarification. Personaly i some times feel i stand out amongst my peers for beleiving in the sanctity of the human form and the body being a temple, I choose not to decorate my temple walls as it were. my freind 'cat' who has a split tongue assures me there are options sexualy that can be acheived with a split tongue that cannot without so there is a plus side but aparently its not the reason he had it done. I would say to you that if you feel you should alter your body then do so - and frankly if you have the courage to make such a step i dont think you will have an issue with regretting your decisions in years to come. Im not saying you wont consider what it might have been like to take the other path but i think you will be without serious regrets. If you do decide to get this procedure done look into the 'binding' method as aparently its the safest. oh and if you do get it done make sure to post up a picture link so all us interested parties can see you sticking your tongue out at the world!

I'm on the fence, but in favor of getting it done. Despite the nearly one-sided responses of this discussion, one thing most people have right is that it's a big deal. Regretable in the long run if I ever change my position on this. I'm about to return to college (art school), and I can't help but wonder if getting it done while in college will alienate myself from the youngins. :)
First, let me preface by saying that I have several tattoos and piercings, so I generally favor and understand body modification, although I personally am not into the extreme kind, like this.

I'm glad to hear that you've invested a great deal of thought and research into the matter.

Ignore the people saying 'eww, that's gross', 'you'd be making yourself into a freak', etc. etc. This is an aesthetic value, and while I suppose they are entitled to their opinion, it's kind of moot, because if you agreed with them, you would not be considering it. (Frankly, it still completely baffles me that people think such statements are acceptable contributions for a discussion.)

Don't worry about what the younger students think. You are going back to school for you. I was a 29 year old college freshman and 34 when I graduated, so I know what I'm talking about when I say that yes, it can be kind of weird going to classes with people who aren't even old enough to drink yet, but it also is kind of cool, too. Profs tend to be more receptive to returning students. (And you're probably not going to be the only old fogey in your classes. It's become rather trendy to go back to school.)

Ultimately, if you believe that the procedure is safe, and that there are no long-term mental or physical health risks associated with doing this, I would focus on how it could potentially impact what you want to accomplish in the future. What is your dream job? If you say 'actor' or 'CEO', then I'd have to say it isn't a smart move. If you say 'artist' or 'musician', then you might could get away with it.

I know you say a split tongue isn't that obvious, but since you can't be guaranteed that no one will notice, what is the worst-case scenario? What if you are in an interview for a job (or talking to a professor might be more appropriate), and you're nervous and you lick your lips... and, just by random chance the person notices? What happens if you meet the guy of your dreams, and he really really digs you, but flips out when you kiss and he notices it?

Seriously, this is the kind of thing I'd do only when I was pretty secure in life. I mean, virtually everybody has tattoos these days, but this is something that people could still freak out about. But it's your body, the procedure is not illegal, and so if you choose to do it, I totally support you.

Well, it seems like you've given it a lot of thought. I'd say, if you're really keen on it, but people around you still humming-and-harring about it, just do what you want.

Go for it. It is your body, and as long as you are happy with it, that's the most important thing; that you think you look good.

Also, I can't imagine it being that visible in everyday life, unless you were laughing or screaming or poking your tongue out. o.o

But yeah. Good luck with it. ^.^ And let us, or at least me, know how it goes, if that's okay. You've got me curious now.

i'm probably never going to do any sort of body modification, but i have to say i fully support tongue splitting. it's one of the few mods that's actually functional beyond looking pretty and hurting a lot.

a lot of people don't seem to understand what it entails and what the effects are; there's surprisingly few negative side effects; the two halves of the tongue are perfectly capable of functioning independently; they're also muscles, so there's no way they're going to "flop around".
note that i have absolutely NO body mods whatsoever, and without voluntary action i have a completely normal tongue. as shocking as tongue-splitting may seem, biologically it's really not that big a deal. if there wasn't as much of a social stigma around it, (if it had the acceptance of, say, body piercing) i would absolutely have done it when i was younger.

for the OP's particular situation, i'm curious as to how long you've wanted to do this. if you've been thinking about it for a decade, definitely go for it. i would wait at least five years before doing something that irreversible to yourself. also, i think it's banned in the U.S. military, idk if that means anything to you.

i'd also suggest you get a tongue stud first, if you don't have one already, and "gauge" (pun intended) how both yourself and others feel about it.

finally, a lot of people in this thread seemed turned off by the idea. personally i think it's hot, and i've heard it said that
"it makes oral sex absolutely incredible."
EDIT: oh, i almost forgot. i've never heard about the increased risk of heart infection, but the major veins in the tongue are rather neatly situated in each half. (you can probably seem them on the bottom of your tongue. these veins, incidentally, make it a really bad idea to try and split your tongue into anything but halves.) Aside from the procedure itself, which i would never let anyone aside from a trained surgeon do, i don't really see how it puts your health at any more risk.

Gah
Watched the vid with the lady getting her tongue all split and damn if I didn't have the same reaction to two girls one cup, hand over mouth saying never again.
But here's the thing, I'd never do it but I'd never tell someone not to. If you want it you go ahead and get it but like everyone says you gotta live with it and be warned if you can't tolerate the pain.

There's not a lot of reason for it, it's more of a novelty than anything, and even if it were my best friend, it'd feel awkward associating with someone like that, and I don't associate too often. Merely, the thought of doing something pointless because it looks cool and sounds/seems cool on paper is really... needless, and the whole thing is just rendered needless.

Go ahead and do it, since you are, though I highly advise against it, seeing as it strikes me as either attention grabbing, or self indulgent, neither of which are really upstanding qualities, so I say.

For the record I read the OP and first page of comments, nothing after that.

Personally, I think body modification is pretty neat. If that's the kind of thing you're into (on a general level) then by all means go for it. I see the prejudice against piercings, tattoos, and other body mods as ridiculously close minded. My ability to think rationally and/or preform any physical or mental activity is not hampered by the picture on my arm or the gauge in the cartilage of my ear.

I'm assuming this is not your first mod. If you've got experience with tongue/ear piercing then you're probably qualified to make this choice. If you don't have a lot of experience with this kind of stuff then I would advise you to start a little smaller. But obviously, you're old enough to make your own decisions, and since you've got a job you don't realy have to worry about interviews.

From everything I understand, the mod your looking at is pretty easily concealed, does not hamper speech and is fairly unique. If you can handle the pain (which I hear is INTENSE) and your job doesn't involve talking to customers all day (because your recovery is going to involve a lot of silence) then do it!

If it floats your boat, sure, go for it. It is your body. Just keep in mind what you are actually doing to it, and if it is something you will regret later on in life. My final advice, think about for at least a year before you go and do it. After a year, if you still want to do it, go for it. I use this method to sort out tattoos for myself.

At the end of the second video you can see the girl cracking up badly. I guess that's endorphins for you, which kick in after a painful episode.

More on topic: Honestly, the anwer depends on how you see yourself and how you are doing in life. If you are pushing thirty and have a stable job then go for it, but if you are trying to put yourself out there and have to be doing interviews and whatnot then I think you should seriously consider the setbacks--sometimes society's perception does affect one's outcome. Again, it depends on how you view yourself and what you want out of it.
