le sigh.
I suppose I should attempt to inure myself to the nonsense, but it seems I cannot.
To all my fellow Escapists out there: I respect your opinion on things that you have experience with, but do yourself (and everyone for that matter) a favor... please do not try to provide value judgements regarding issues with which you have no experience!
What do I mean? Very simply this: I see many posts passing judgment what is being discussed... and then I look at the profile of the posters and discover that the person making this sweeping statement is a student who isn't even 21 years of age yet, and they freely admit within the post that they haven't done anything even remotely similar.
So I ask you... upon what grounds are you basing your authority? Have you been a hiring manager and passed over someone for a job because they had a body-mod? Probably not: truthfully, all you have to fall back upon are the values and beliefs upon which you were raised, and it is ludicrous for you to assume that you share those with the OP.
I appreciate that you have an opinion regarding what you think is the right thing to do, but... honestly? It is absurd for you to present your opinion as being worthy of consideration by a person who is making a potentially life-changing decision, based simply on the fact that you THOUGHT it, when the only thing you have to offer is conjecture!
I hate to sound like a tedious know-it-all (although I recognize that I, frankly, excel at that), but the first responsibility of a member of a community is recognizing when he or she does not have the experience or authority to contribute to a conversation!
Otherwise, you are just increasing the Noise in the Signal-to-Noise ratio... and that is not a good thing.
{Stands back and waits for the flaming to begin, but GODDAMN some of our younger Escapists need to know this stuff, before they get destroyed in the 'Real World' for this sort of behavior}
EDIT: and just to clarify... I work at a software developer that I'm sure everyone here knows, and to provide a short-and-sweet example, if I went in to a planning meeting and made the statement "Oh, I don't think we should do that" about a proposed course of action, and when they asked me "well, have you done this sort of thing before?" and then, "what are your experiences with this sort of proposal?" and I replied 'No...' and 'None to speak of...', I promise you, I wouldn't be working there for very much longer.
