The Imperial Guard: laser pointers and cardboard armour but awesome tanks and titans.

Mobile Infantry: ageing one armed-officers and bad actors with crap hair.

No contest, even Michael Ironside can't compare to Gaunt's Ghosts!

Folks, I think its clear that the Guard would decimate the Mobile Infantry. In terms of weaponry, numbers, training, tenacity and emprah-ness.
Granted the MI where (as far as I can tell) the basis for most modern day space marines, they got nerfed something shocking and thus CHARGE FOR THE EMPRAH!

By the way, I would also join the guard, cause the then I might get close enough to see a REAL speehs mahreen.
For the foul crime of Necromancy, Commissar Fuklaw sentences you to death.

O (foul, rotting reanimated corpse of a) T: Mobile Infantry, the bugs are pretty much a minor inconvenience, it's only being stupidly overconfident that gets the MI slaughtered.

Depends.

Which is cooler? The Imperial Guard. Simply because they exist in the WH40K universe.

Which would I rather join? The Starship Troopers, because I'd actually have a chance to survive. When the shit hits the fan, billions of Imperial Guard can and will be sacrificed to ensure victory.
The Starship troopers are not much better in that respect.

First battle in the movie? 100,000 died to the bugs in an HOUR, with their commanders thinking that a Zerg rush was the best thing that could counter what basically WAS the Zerg.

At least the Imperial Guard have a good chance of having some combined arms (aka armor and air support) and use descent tactics at least some of the time, so your chances to survive. You also get a free book of comedy/toilet paper in the form of the The Imperial Infantryman's Uplifting Primer.

God Emperor help you if your a Planetary Defense Force, though.

Unless you're Cadian PDF. The Interior and Internal Guards are still better than the average Guardsmen from other planets.

Of course, Cadian's are some of the toughest people that aren't Space Marines and they recruit from sources other than gangs.

Everybody else, the PDF's job is to slow the enemy down by being dinner.

Very well, I will commute your sentence of death to a lifetime of service as a Homicidal Rage Counsellor for the Angry Marines.

That sounds like a job I can handle...from the other side of a void shield maybe?

Imperial Guard, as long as I get to serve with Grifen and Magot.

Oh, and that one whose name I can't recall who's like the accident-prone good-luck-charm.

Imperial Guard without a doubt, in the movie there are no tanks so the bugs are free to chop Mobile Infantry to bits. In the guard at worst there's a chimera firing it's laser safely over my head, at best a titan walks infront of you and wins the battle.

Also I might get to be a commissar, there is more honor in that position than in all of the mobile infantry.

Back on topic.

How are people voting for MI, the OP specified that it was the movie version. Compare the entire starship troopers movie, to the average IG army. Unless 40k has changed dramatically in the last few years, each guard army should still include several tanks, and occasionally a basilisk artillery piece. Lets see how long your redshirt MI can stand up to a barrage of HE artillery fire, and enough laser pointers aimed at them so that they all appear red.
I don't care how many MI they can throw in the field, the guard had untold billions at its disposal and will sacrifice as many of them as necessary to kill the enemy.
You must be confused. The question isnt who would win but instead which would you join. Given that the average lifespan of a MI grunt is about a million times higher than that of the "safest" IG grunt, I'd say I'm more surprised anyone would ever willinly choose to join the Guard. Then again...do people in the Guard even have a choice in the first place?

I see your Fish of Fury and raise you this guy:

Or this guy:

Imperial Guard all the way, unless you expand Mobile Infantry to include the ones from the book.[/quote]

There is no "the Imperial Guard", the recruit from different nation and cultures all across the galaxy. You could sign up and never see any action, garrison some world not worth invading...most of the time you probably would, I think, stuff like the wars for Armageddon are described as 1, 2 and 3, and the 1st was more than 300 years before the 3rd. Armageddon has been inhabited for millenia, and been fought over thrice...yeah, pretty safe place to be for a soldier, most of the time.

On the other hand, the MI, did they fight much? They were utterly hopeless, maybe there wasn't a war for some time before the movie, so you could have lucked out and served then.

...

In regards to IG vs MI (movie), way back when there was an article in WD about the similarities, and about playing stuff from the movie with guard and nids. It advised not taking IG heavy weapons and tanks, and any nid with a gun...yeah...

The universe that the Mobile Infantry inhabit is entirely livable, whereas, as they say, in the Grim Darkness of the 41st Millenium There Is Only War.

And treachery, having your soul stolen, mind-numbing religious observances, utterly minimal education, and a lifetime of slavery for the vast majority of the human race; being in the IG just means you'll probably die by the swaord before you die of exhaustion and malnutrition.

Guard. Guard is infinitely more awesome and for the record.

READ THE MOTHER FUCKING BOOK! YOu will come to loathe the movie after you do; and its a very good book all the same.

Plus actual MI is NOTHING like the flak armor wearing ninnies in the movie.

I won't rend the pleasure of enlightenment from you by describing the differences so for the love of the god-Emperor; GO GET THE BOOK!

Edit: This is me resisting the urge to explain why your knowledge of the mobile infantry is wrong.

Edit: Still resisting but since i posted i have an ad to join the Marine corp on my escapist ad box. Anyone else?
I actually equally enjoy the movie and the book. The movie is much easier to tolerate when you treat it like a parody, even though it mostly makes the same point.
