Out of the ones already on the list, I'd have to go with Doom. Everything on there is pretty fun, but I could never get into the Half-Life games.

The Rainbow Six games up to whatever came after Raven Shield and its expansions (I think it was lockdown?) were absolutely awesome, I wish someone would go back and make a game in that vein today.

unreal tournament, S.T.A.L.K.E.R, and the killzone series (granted the 1st game had issues, but unlike some other developers Guerrilla learnt from their mistakes)

For me it's Battlefield, especially Battlefield 2. The features are great and make teamwork mandatory to succeed which is a huge plus for me.
Bad company? If so can't say I don't agree. Its my favorite FPS.

No love for the sequel? :(

OT: Can't decide. Doom/Quake/Half-Life/Unreal/Duke Nukem/Redneck Rampage because I grew up playing them and I have very fond memories of each.

i choose every fps.

they all influenced each other as their franchises continued...

and so ill just point out the things i liked most in these fps' based on features and/or game types:

Cod: good fps controls , fast paced mutiplayer.

half life: story.

Bioshock: atmosphere

Doom: the whole first person camera idea.

Halo: better campaign and multyplayer flow (rechargeable shields and what not)

TimeSplitters: never played it so i cant comment on it.

Quake and unreal: weapon reliance , arena , mutiplayer , announcer.

Battlefield: Music ,sound effects , Vehicles , Team play.

iam sure there are other iam forgetting but yeah thats what i got...

Halo as a series introduced so many things to the genre, with Halo 1 holding the distinction (at the very least, in my mind) as the first modern shooter. It's got my vote.

I didn't read all of the comments but I'm guessing that Goldeneye is on there somewhere (at least it should be). =-/ Goldeneye is one of those games that you can pick up at any time and still enjoy the game for how good it is and not just for the heavy wave of nostalgia that comes with shooting those enemies with the creepy faces and being able to be Oddjob in multiplayer.

The thing about Goldeneye is that if it came out now (The same way is came out in the 90's, not the remake) it wouldn't be considered that good. I mean, it is very much a simple first person shooter and the enemy AI isn't that good. At its prime though it was considered the king of FPS's.

I also want to bring up the COD games. Besides Goldeneye, I have never been much obliged to play FPS's. They were never really my thing. I have to say though, that Call of Duty: World at War and Call of Duty: Black Ops have to be two of the best games I have ever played. They have great, engaging stories, the action is well-done, in allowing you to do things that most things would put into cut-scenes, the voice acting is believable and full of life, and you actually (well, in my case) get attached to the soldiers that fight around you, and want to protect them from enemy gunfire. Because of all this I find myself so immersed in the game. I actually feel like I'm there, fighting Germans, Russians, Vietnamese, what have you.

Take it from me; for someone who doesn't much care for FPS I have fallen in love with two of the COD games, Call of Duty: Black Ops and World at War. In my opinion, these two games are some of the best games out there. You really get your money's worth in how much you enjoy the game.

It's a tie between Half-Life 2 and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. (all 3 of them, but mostly SoC)and also I find Doom 3 wierdly compelling, don't know why though.

Why in the fuck has nobody mentioned Perfect freaking Dark?!
Seriously? Nobody remembers the ONLY FPS that's better than Goldeneye?
Damn.

Call of Duty: World at War is the greatest game of all time, so i'm going with Call of Duty.

Also, not to nitpick but the second "e" in GoldenEye should be capitalised. It's a truly unremarkable shooter these days though. No denying that it had a massive impact on the genre, but it's not even close to being the best 007 game, let alone the best FPS.
