Or not collecting stamps isn't a hobby.
I disagree. Not having any views on the matter would make you religion-less, but since Atheists have an opinion on the matter; I'd say that Atheism is as much of a religion as Theism.
Surely a religion isn't just a matter of having an opinion about god? I'd say for it to be a religion, it needs to involve a belief in a deity
Well, if that is the definition of a religion, then Atheism isn't a religion.

I am glad that we agree.

Atheism is just the label. Its not a common goal, or unification of any kind. It would be like you saying you like baseball then everyone labeling you as a pro baseball player. Its just the rejection of such things as religion and deities etc etc. We cant have a proper debate on this because of how ill informed most people are on the subject at hand. Hence we get flames, recycled arguments with a deep basis in ignorance, etc etc.
This is really good. Everyone read this. I really wish I could say /thread now and it'd have meaning.

A civilised religious discussion on the internet in which two parties agree? I must be dreaming!

Atheism isn't a religion, given that it's not a belief in a deity. Therefore, atheist views fall under the "freedom of speech" part of that there paper, and should not be oppressed.

atheism is not a religion, but it is still a belief that many people have and hold dear so it should be protected by the first amendment. but not in that stupid take god out of the pledge of allegiance kind of way thats just nitpicky. i wouldnt care if i had to say under zeus or whatever i just dont want to have to relearn it.

You are sorta right. YOu can be religious and still be an atheist (Buddhists), it just means you lack belief in a god or gods. A= not/without theist=belief in a god or gods

I think that it has something to do with the music I'm listening to. Normally I listen to Rage Against the Machine (angry rap/rock/funk) and similar music, but currently I'm listening to Nujabes (extremely relaxing music)... Strange. I've never thought of it before.

Is not a religion and requires NO special treatment.

The right to EXERCISE religion is the right to abstain from it as well.

Hard to argue against that that
Thank you. This thread is going to get overly complicated VERY quickly. There are some very simple points that should temper that... I hope.

I personally think it's a religion. Christianity is a religion, Atheism is a religion or lack thereof. Blue is a color, black is a color or lack thereof. But that's just me. I suppose the counter argument to that is black is not technically a color. So go ahead and debate it(kindly) but I think Atheism is a religion.

What definition of religion are you going by? Would you therefore agree that Christianity is a type of atheism?

This is all getting really stale now.
Agreed. Besides, it doesn't really matter: when the First Amendment says "religion", it's assumed to mean religious beliefs in general: including being an atheist.

But yeah, the debate over whether atheism is or is not a religion is pointless. I reference atheism as a religion only because it's a pain in the ass to constantly have to make exceptions in my posts.

Makes sense to me.
The matter is really quite simple and I see it going very much astray.

The same rights apply to the freedom of expression and the right to bear arms.

I have a right to own a gun, and the right to NOT own a gun.

I have a right to express myself respectfully in any way I please, and the right to remain silent.
(This actually extends to the right that one may ignore the expressions of others.)

Wow that was fast. Anyway, I suppose the one that says do what you feel in your heart is the right thing to do.

I'm an athiest and I say its a religion because religion is belief and I believe there is no god so therefore its a religion. Saying I don't believen magic isn't really a religion because its used in a different way kinda, not really, but whatever, you see where I'm going with this. I just don't want anyone to contradict my reason why atheism is a religion.
I believe in freedom of speech, doesn't make it a religion.

Religion involves superstition. A cloud fairy, miracles, virgin births, humans with animal heads etc. You can have these superstitions and be atheist (lucky pulling pants for example) but it's not a prerequisite like it is for religion.

A lack of war (peace) is still a war = A lack of religion (atheism) is still a religion.

You are playing word games.

I'm gonna go with:don't know, don't care for the topic question.
Hey, at least it's something a little bit thought provoking, not like on Newgrounds where the same thing is happening with Pot threads.
