No, it's not a religion.
Anyway, I don't know about the first amendment, but in our law the freedom of religion also includes a freedom from religion.
Therefore, atheism should be respected and unhindered like religions, too.

I'm an Atheist as well. Religion by definition is:

" A set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, esp. when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs."

Almost not a religion then. However, I would assume the Thomas Jefferson would have made sure there was something in there about Atheism, considering he was, in fact, was an Atheist.
A set of beliefs concerning it? Atheists hold the belief that there is no God... so... religion?

Can I have a cookie niao?

Atheism isn't a religion, because it's one who has NO religion. However, in the first amendment, it grants freedom of religion, therefore, you're free to NOT have a religion as well as one who has a totally obscure religion, or one that has one of the biggest followers on the planet.

That's true, bashing religion almost seems to be a trend now, I'm not even sure they truly believe what they are saying and just want people to think they are somehow enlightened or more intelligent.

Atheism isn't intended as a religion. However the definition of religion is broad enough to include it.

More to the point, when an atheist treats atheism as a religion (I'm looking at all the anti-theists) it crosses the line from philosophy to religion for that person.

If you don't want atheism to be called a religion do not act like fundamentalist Christians when discussing your beliefs.

Booyah! I love spending my time not collecting stamps, it's the most fun I had in years!
[small]Still doesn't make it a hobby, though. I fully agree with you.[/small]

Religion:
1. Belief in and reverence for a supernatural power or powers regarded as creator and governor of the universe.
2. A personal or institutionalized system grounded in such belief and worship.

Atheism:
1. Disbelief in or denial of the existence of God or gods.
2. The doctrine that there is no God or gods.

There, those are called definitions. Anyone who thinks atheism is a religion, clearly doesn't understand them.

But you need the rest.
Like
1: A holy book. (We don't have one)
2: Set of special rules. (We don't have any special ones. We just follow the laws of the country.)
3: A God
4: A way of life. (Telling what you should do when something happen)
5: Purpose of life. (Why you are on earth to begin with.)

Now if Atheism is classified as a religion. I'm gonna go ahead and classify, gaming, golf, soccer, hockey, football, driving, sleeping, murder and pretty much anything you can do.

Because by you anything that doesn't have a god is enough to be a Religion.

Atheism will NEVER be a religion. How many times do we have to say it? :/

I can be called a belief system. Because we believe there is no God/Gods. But that's as far as it goes.

Its important to remember that religion is not merely a term for belief, its "a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, esp. when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs."
If religion was simply a belief, then yes atheism would be a religion in its own right. But Atheism is a belief that religion is flawed or incorrect, and does not include a belief or opinion of how the world was created therefore cannot be a religion and is infact the polar opposite.
My own belief is that i am against religion in the manor that it causes the suffering and deaths of millions, so its not for me.

I believe that people are free to believe what they want to if they choose to believe at all and I believe that atheists are just exercising their rights to free speech et al. Point is: I believe.

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

Even if atheism is not considered a religion, it is still a form of free speech and therefore protected.

The first amendment protects freedom of conscience with its freedom of speech, the press, exercise of religion and establishment clauses. Of course the first amendment applies to atheism, it applies to any belief. Anything the government would do that would even begin to disturb atheism violates the establishment clause.
