COD4 was (arguably) my GOTY for 2007. Great single-player, with loveable characters and a well told (if generic) story.

The multiplayer really shined for me. A lot of people are saying that It's unbalanced, but it really isn't. You could make any weapon work; you could use any weapon to your advantage. I personally favoured the MP5, a friend of mine swore by the Skorpion, and another friend constantly used the M4 or M16. Every weapon had its benefits, providing you used it properly.

The playing field was usually level in terms of perks as well. Most people chose Stopping Power, and overall it was very balanced. Martyrdom and Last Stand were minor annoyances, but avoidable given the skill.

The perks don't make the game unbalanced anyway. A skilled player with no perks will easily overcome a inexperienced player who's armed to the tits with juggernaut and a LMG.

Edit: Yeah. The guy below didn't listen to me.

COD started going downhill after the second one, they introduced all these *blech* perks and abilities, the first ones were just about the utter brutality of war, the rest have just added novelties that dilute the fun.

And don't get me fucking started on martyrdom, last stand or the mines. Or the endless grenade spamming. Or the overpowered rifles. Or the gulf between the newbies and the vets due to weapons. Or the deagle with the accuracy of a sniper rifle. Or the stupid voice overs "Victory for GERMANY".

COD is hard to rate. On one hand, you have games like 2 and 4:MW, which were both great games. On the other hand, you have games like 3 and WaW, which were rather poor installments. I think the series is only over-rated because of the following it appears to have in most critic circles.

COD4, NO. COD 5, yes. COD4 and COD2 were the only good ones, at least in my opinion. Killzone 2 is better than COD4 though, if only because COD4 uses invisible markers so often. Enemies will just keep pouring after you until you get to a certain unmarked point. It's too linear. Killzone 2 only uses that 3 times, and it's well masked each time. Those moments almost ruined COD4 for me, almost, but not quite. It's such a good game that it can get away with it, but that doesn't mean that it isn't bad. So I voted no, COD 2 and COD 4 are great.
I have an xbox and i hole-heartedly agree with your opinion.
As long as your saying COD5 was better than COD4 and 2 and 3 were also good.
I don't want COD5 simply because it's another WWII game. I'm tired of WWII shooters. I'd rather spend my money on Halo Wars and Killzone 2. I don't have enough money for 3 games, just two. And COD3 was good, but it doesn't hold a candle to COD2 and COD4. The inclusion of vehicles doesn't make up for lacking level design and shoddy graphics.

Its good but incredibly unbalanced. On CoD5 the best weapon is the MP40, on CoD4 it was the M16 or P90 (CoD4 had larger maps than 5).

And I laugh at people who think they are realistic. I mean, the flamethrower on World At War has a range of a garden rake.
I'm going to assume you play on a console as these guns will get you nowhere on PC. the M4/mp5 and AK-47/74 dominate competitive league play.

It's not overrated in my opinion because I think it's boring and rate it very low. My friends all seem to like it so I half recommend it to people. I say, "Everyones seems to like it so you may."

Yes, COD4 is exreeeeeeemely overrated!
Now don't get me wrong, I love the game I found the single player mode to be a very immersive experience (if a little short and irritating how the enemies constantly respawn and your team mates do bugger all to help you). The online, as well, is very well done. It seems to be quite balanced most of the time and although a lot of people rant about the perks/overpowered weapons I can't see a problem. To me if it's something that everyone can use/earn then it's all fair game.
The one thing that makes me deem COD4 as being overrated is the simple fact that a short while ago the store GAME did a survey and asked people what the "greatest game ever" was... COD4 came in at number 1! Yes, it's a good game but it's by no means the greatest game of all time.
(and I know this topic is about the COD series as a whole, it's just that in terms of being overrated COD4 tops the pile)

I know what you mean, but be careful not to overdo the generalizations. Eloquence ≠ pedanticism
Yeah...I did not feel like editing my post after reading it...

Yes

What got me against the series was when Cod4 came out, and it was named GOTY by like everyone. What about Bioshock? Crysis? STALKER? Any one of these 3 is way better than COD4 or any COD game.

And the COD series is not even realistic! I'm not even getting into examples.

True. Its a solid FPS, but brings nothing new to the table. Much like Halo 3, but people treated that like the second coming of christ.

Every day at college i hear people banging on about how the cod seres is the best series ever because of its realism and multiplayer. I disagree with this as i am admittedly a massive halo fanboy. But one of my main reasons for hating cod is that i find the multiplayer incredibly unbalanced. On an open map on cod4 one player can sit back, out of view, get seven kills and then call in a chopper to kill everything. Surely this doesnt make a good online experience? So, i would like to know if im the only person who thinks cod is shit.
And a CoD4 Fanboy like me says:

Halo is too easy

The point that there are campers in CoD4 pisses me off, but then I remember why they are there. To provide a challenge..and that people are stupid <.<

But at least it requires a lot of skill to play, unlike halo.

Halo is basically the "If you are new to FPS's, Play this!" type of game.

I mean don't get me wrong, Halo is fun but doesn't take that much skill.

I haven't played too much of the other games except for Modern Warfare and I am passionately indifferent towards it. So yes, considering how much it's praised, it is very overrated. I really don't mind people liking it, but I do heavily mind people calling it one of the best ever. Yes, it's a well built game, but it never did anything to convince me that it was anything special. Campaign is short and the story hardly feels like it's there because most of it is told through rather boring mission briefing segments. This is somewhat eased by the on and off presentation. The multiplayer, like any other online shooter, can't really be judged by quality because the only reason any one ever LOVES a game for it's online is because they are either good at it or are trying to be modest. On top of that I can always nitpick it. Like the bullshit ranking system (I never liked ranking systems, even matchmaking systems, but CoD4's is indeed bullshit by giving the more experienced players the better weapons and shit) and extremely unbalanced range of weapons like any other game with "realistic" weapons. Modeling your arsenal after real guns means most of them are going to all be machine guns with little variation between them.

I do yes.

Im guessing the precision with the mouse makes people great with those weapons. People on PC don't use the M16 competitively? Whoa.

.... It's decent. If they could redo 4 again and solve its flaws I wouldnt say it is overrated.

Not very often. Watch a few archived casts over at www.e-rev.tv and see for yourself. completely different game.
