do you know how much money we lose every year to shoplifters? The electronics department at my store lost $50,000 last year alone! Which means the store probably lost over $100,000!

Yes, Wal-Mart will call the police and have you arrested for shoplifting in the store. The things people do for a criminal record, oi.
Apparently many shoplifters are too crafty for Wal-Mart security. Who'd have thought?
This thread has officially become ironic. Today, a man attempted to walk out of the store with two, count 'em, two computers! I'm serious, he tried leaving the store with two large computer boxes in his cart!

Security didn't even need to try, this guy wrapped himself and stuck a big bow on his head. Some people... *facepalm*
You'd be amazed how easy it is to walk out of a place like that with a massive television and no one blinking an eyelid. All it takes is confidence, a couple of simple tricks and a little bit of luck on your side.

I fail to see where the "culture" part comes in here. Last I checked being a wanna-be antichrist isn't a culture. Also, your friend is pathetic and delusional. Get a new one.

I work at Wal-Mart. Here goes nothing.

First off, stealing is wrong. Period. With the few extreme exceptions, stealing is wrong.
Second, just because it's Wal-Mart doesn't mean it's okay to steal (see #1). Even if Wal-Mart is a huge corporate tyrant (which it's not), even if it's a merciless slave driver (which it's not), and even if it's products are questionable (which is fair, but consider most products nowadays are foreign-made) it is NEVER okay to steal.
I don't believe in moral absolutes. There is very nearly always a grey area or situation (I say 'nearly' because I'm assuming there's always gonna be something I can't think of) in any ethical problem. Just sayin'. And without that, I've just never been able to be convinced of the serious harm in shoplifting. You endanger no one but yourself (unless you do it in a situation where a staff member can be directly blamed and thus punished) and no matter how great the losses, it's still a drop in the bloody ocean. Employees keep their jobs, one or two less Wal-Marts are set up a year, execs keep their massive salaries. The world goes on.

I don't like your existence. Is it culturally acceptable to set you on fire? Because I hate you and your practices. I might make a poll about that.

Doesn't matter where you steal from, it's not right. I work in a little shop and I nearly battered this teenager I caught nicking a Mars bar. I mean a Mars bar getting stolen certainly isn't life or death but it's pretty disheartening for staff when they see things going missing.

Don't look at Wal-mart as a big picture, but think of it as simply another store. Don't make things any more difficult.

I wouldn't say stealing is wrong but it's definitely not culturally acceptable. Of course, this is all completely subjective.
Sweet, since to you stealing is ok, when can I come over to your house. Do you own a console system? Next Gen or Old gen?

The higher ups that make WalMart evil won't pay for it. Stolen merchandise is usually paid for by the people WalMart is exploiting.

If you're like...Robin Hood. Then no, stealing is fine.
Actually, it's strange. For me, sometimes good people have to do bad things. If such a thing requires stealing from an awful organization/store chain, then sure. I'm not going to, but go right ahead.

Culturally acceptable? No.
But then it goes down to whether you want to be culturally acceptable. I'd be more than willing to steal from them, if I was careful.

Now I'm overtly anti Daily Mail outrage, but this could be a sign of the problem we have in society, a growing group of people who think it's ok to break the law if they can get away with it, can break stuff, abuse people etc, can even beat people up so long as they win...

Maybe you can steal from Walmart and get away with it, but it's not right, it's that simple.

I admit I've pirated a few cds, movies and games in my time, too, but I know it's a bad thing and I should have bought them. I think it's not so much the problem that people are stealing now, but that some people think it's acceptable to, so long as they don't get caught.

Note: I'm not trying to start a piracy is theft topic here, just pointing out that I know piracy is wrong and so is theft. I certainly never thought I was striking a blow against 'the man'.

I really don't know what to think. I would never actually steal from a store, but I don't really see the big dead with downloading music and movies and such. I don't think it's culturally acceptable though. I mean, you don't go to Walmart and see a bunch of people taking whatever they want off the shelves and stuffing it in their pockets. In fact, I've never seen anyone actually steal anything from Walmart.

And the Walmart hate is just silly. Hating a store because it's big corporation is an idea I've never understood. Just watch Penn & Teller talk about it.

Stealing is wrong, no matter from whoever, it doesn't matter if they are ill-gotten gains or not. Two wrongs don't make a right.

How about the most logical answer....

There are multiple cultures. The answer you will get to your question might be yes or no depending on the culture you ask from.
Maybe it's just me here, but...what culture would say stealing is OK? I'm curious.
There are cultures where stealing is morally accepted given condition x (stolen to feed family etc) and there are certain cultures which justify stealing from the enemy of your state or people.
