You are not mistaken. What you really notice the decline in quality is with long running shows, such as pokemon(pokemon's actually started ripping itself off now).

In the 90's after the success of Roger Rabbit, for a short time, cartoons were respected and people became nostalgic of the 40 and 50's cartoons. Animation became something that can be for both children and adults, and doesn't have to look down on children like the last 30 years had been moving towards. However, that age quickly died with three things. Anime started to come over to America in large amounts, Pokemon, Digemon, what-ever-emon. They were getting as high, or higher ratings then locally made cartoons and were far cheaper to redub. Cartoons for adults also came about with the success of the Simspons, meaning that having sexual innuednos or other adult entertainment hidden in cartoons like Animaniacs was unneeded. Finally, the big boy of television animation, Warner Brothers, shut down most of the animation studio since their finical flop of the 90 animated films (4 out of the 5 animated Warner brothers films didn't even make money, and I think the filth was Space Jam). With all adult audiences going to other shows, and all the kids going to anime, Western animation did the only thing it could do to survive, cut-back budgets, copy anime, and lose all quality.
Well said. *tear rolls down* I felt a great disturbance in the force when Warner Brothers animation shut down. It was as though a part of myself died. Like there would never be any laughter or happiness ever again. On that day I accepted video games as the true medium.

It's okay... (Pats Blinds on the back) at least video games won't sell out right? We only have a billion space marines, Farmville, several company's that only remake the same game every year, and Lego Rock Band...

Oh I love you for mentioning Johnny Bravo.

You're not mistaken. Cartoons are worse nowadays. Much much worse.
Oh you'll love this then!

By the way, love your avatar.
I love you for posting that, seriously will you marry me.

But yeah cartoons now adays are shit with very very very few exceptions, I watcched that new one Adventure Time today since nothing else was on and I couldn't find my remote I was expecting more crap to be surprised with something that wasn't bad.

I'm pissed about supposed cartoon networks showing live action shows (makes no sense) and I do miss the good old shows.

Dear God, it all makes sense now... We finally know why the downfall of good cartoons came... We must rise up and destroy anime! Every bit of the manga and poorly dubbed films that classifies as anime must be BURNED!

I'm sure they were better, but I have massive nostalgia-tinted glasses for that time anyway - take my avatar as evidence.

Also, Courage the Cowardly Dog is the only cartoon that made me cry. This episode really made me cry when I was a kid. Hell it still tears me up:

Anyway OP, normally I would say your just nostalgic and complaining about "kids these days" and that same old stuff about hating new things. But considering what replaced our old cartoons with:

Yeah. Cartoons back then kicked way more ass than cartoons now.

And now I leave you with a parting song...

Oh... how the mighty have fallen...

They do, but that doesn't mean I have to stop liking them, right? There are still good video games.
-We must bring the genius of Spielberg back to cartoons, it's our only chance! Hurry my old chum, to the Batmobile!

No. Courage the Cowardly Dog is easily better than anything else. Even without Nostalgia. Courage was about psychological comedy/horror, and made you think about some pretty deep stuff. It helped fuel good thinking. No other cartoon these days does that.

I do think that, except for a few, cartoons nowadays are pretty awful. Mostly because they're watered down unlike shows like ren and stimpy and rocko's modern life. But on the other hand I'm sure our parents thought the shows we watched back then were just as retarded as the ones we see kids watch today.
