Art is a way of expressing emotion and giving opinions, and is pleasing to some audience, but like all art throughout history, it is mainly a matter of opinion what is art and what isn't, and no, I don't think a lot of modern music is art, especially not pokerface.

in fairness all music appears to be art to those who make it, through the ages there will have been music some people liked and some people hated as it is all a matter of personal taste. though i will freely admit that most popular modern music does just sound liek noise to me i do accept that there are a lot of people who like it (hence it being popular), though whther it is art or creative expression is another matter entirely given the rampant commercialism of the modern music industry.

Any song is art.
Any painting is art.
Any game is art.

Any creative work is art.
But art does not necessarily mean good.

If there's one thing I actually learned from school, it's that you can take a dump in a bucket and call it art...

"Sound and silence, both are part of music and music is art... And there is bad and good art... mainly bad." Some wise old Trombonist that was totally wasted and I met him in this on Jazz happening where I was last summer.

My personal opinion is that for music to be art, it has to effect you in some way, on an emotional level. I personally like my not musical art to move me emotionally, so maybe thats why?

All music is art because 'art' is extremely subjective. If there is at least one person out there who experiences some emotion from the song, be it happiness, sadness, anger, annoyance, etc, then the artist(s) did their job and the song becomes art. Now whether or not you want to hear the song again is a different story.

Well, I play clarinet and I've been in the Performing Arts program for four years.

Sigh. Of course it bloody is. That's like asking if wet paint is smelly.

Outside of Hip-Hop and Rap... Yes.

Inside the Indie scene it is most definitely art. Almost every band I like and know plays their music to enjoy music, and to share themselves with it. Pesonally I write my music for the sole purpose of other people enjoying it and taking something away from it. I would never write music just for profit. I do not play to become famous.... I would hate being famous.

Edit: Other thought... everytime I hear Poker Face.. I phoenetically her "Poke Poke Poke Her Face"... at which point I reach over and poke my wife in the face... lol

For clarification: I was not specifically referring to you, but rather the many ignorant opinions coming out of threads like this.

Of course music is art. All music is art. I just drew this:

Just because it isn't as good as this:

Doesn't make it not art. It's a spectrum, and they are near opposing ends but still are on the spectrum. The same applies to music.

Also, interesting that you cite Queen. They were good, but they were just a pop band as well. What of their songs meant more than any pop stuff that's around today?

And music doesn't have to have insightful lyrics to be art. Beethoven? Mozart?
This is also considered art. So yah, art is in the eye of the beholder.

Far too many people perpetuate the idea that I was trapped in in my early years of high school, when the only rap I heard was the crap they play on the radio, and so I just made blanket statements of "I like everything except rap."

I realize not everybody cares for rap in general, but that doesn't mean that all of it sucks, and it sure as hell doesn't mean it isn't art.

I'm going to have to disagree with you. I believe it is just as much art as any other music. The way some (not all, yes many rappers are absolute trash, but so are most of every genre) can play with beats and use wordplay never ceases to amaze me. And lest you forget, when a member of the band Oasis tried to call out Jay-Z on this issue, he proceeded to play one of their most popular songs, both playing lead guitar and singing lead. I'd like to see anyone form Oasis repeat one of Jay-Z's raps.

Of course music art. But just like visual media, there will be good examples and there will be bad. Today's pop might not be the most...meaningful, but for the most part it's catchy (whether you want it to be or not) and snappy. That's a feat in of itself.

Right now, I think the most "artistic" bands (for lack of a better term) are on the independent scene. And these are slowly starting to come to light with their songs being used in TV and movies (usually because their rights are easier and cheaper to acquire). I've heard The Decemberists in How I Met Your Mother and Antony & the Johnsons in Bones, two bands you'll never hear on the radio and both pushing the boundaries of the indie rock genre.

Music is art. There can be bad music, but there can be bad art too. Bad art is still art; there's still someone out there who likes that stuff. Why can't the same apply to music?
