Slipknot is nu metal.
Despite the name, nu metal technically isn't considered a subgenre of metal. Glam rock, once again despite the name, is considered a subgenre of metal.

Sorry folks. The non metal classification came from nu metal's roots. It's a blend of grunge and rap, both of which aren't metal. Grunge is essentially alternate rock with "heavy" downtuned guitars. Nu metal is grunge with rap on top.
Not really, the whole rap-metal fusion has been going on since the 80's. Anthrax recorded a track with Public Enemy; on the album "The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste" Ministry recorded a track called "Test" (don't know who raps in it, but it's rap-metal); Faith no More has been doing it since the early 80's; and I'm sure there are dozens more.

Well, if they would get rid of the masks, they wouldn't be slipknot no more. And then the hardcore fans would be all like, yeah they threw their masks away but they still sound like shit.

EDIT: oops

Top that bitchez, :)

On a serious note, I first heard their songs, only after a couple of months I really googled some videos and saw that they have masks, so really, I was attracted by the music, not by the image. Really.

I didn't know Sulfur turned into a single. Sweet, thats my favorite song off that album.

Anyway, yes Slipknot are metal, and yes, they kick ass. They put on a badass concert too.

ok yes slipknot is metal if you don't listen to slipknot just because of there new stuff then your missing out go listen to Iowa or the Slipknot albums there new albums arn't as dark and hate filled Cory just isn't as angry as he was in there older stuff which is what makes the band great so if you want real slipknot go listen to Surfacing from the slipknot album (which is my personal favorite)

Slipknot are not and have never been Nu Metal; they just got lumped into that subgenre because they got big at the same time as the whole nu metal thing blew up.

I think they're metal. I don't personally like them. I bought one of their albums, and didn't really get attached to it. It had shiny album art though. Not Firefly shiny, I mean reflective shiny.

I think for a pretty good basic metal education, you should check out the two documentaries by Sam Dunn, "Metal: A Headbanger's Journey [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0478209/]" followed by "Global Metal [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1249171/]". Both are very well done and informative.

Slipknot, along with Korn, Disturbed, SOAD, are not metal. They might verge close to it, but it's not.

funniest thing is people calling it death metal. goddamn.

edit: this slipknot [http://metal-archives.com/band.php?id=102128] is metal

Between metal fans I see a lot of controversy surrounding Slipknot and no one seems to be able to agree whether or not the band is metal.

My opinion is that they're more metal than a lot of bands that people seem to obsess about. This is their newest single; what do you think?

Sulfur, by Slipknot.
They never were metal, they were nu-metal and should be given the same revilement as Linkin Park, type o negative, sevendust and recent System of a down albums.

But...nu-metal is metal, theres a strong clue in the title.

Nu-metal is a mere shadow of what people consider metal and should be banished to the deepest, darkest reaches of the seventh layer of hell.
If they ever want to be taken seriously, they should kick Corey out. He's better off in Stonesour.

You must be f***ing kidding me. You would put this...

...in the same genre as this?

I don't think you know what you're talking about. At all. I'm going to have to ask you to go sit in the corner for a couple of hours.

Sorry to say it, to the person above me, but It's not me that put them in the same sub-genre.
It is the media, and "authorities on music".
You think I don't know what I'm talking about?
I'm a fucking sound engineer...
I know what metal is, I mix it every weekend.
System of a down, Linkin park and Slipknot are all classed as nu-metal, so stop talking and deal with it.

"Authorities on music?"

How the shit-frosted fuck is the Slipknot song I just posted nu-metal and not in the same genre as your average Iron Maiden or Slayer track?

The "authorities" can kiss my ass. I don't listen to "authorities" when they're not making any damn sense.
