Yes they are, although many dont like them, they still are.
here is a breakdown from what i have seen. (slightly off topic)

Wannabes who think they are mega metalheads seem to drool over them.

Metal fans who thing they are all that seem to hate them and everything about them cos its the cool thing to do.

Metal fans who actually like metal for metal, not by the name of the band it came from either seem to like or dislike a few songs.

A lot of their songs are very differant and appeal to some people more than others, i know people who love vermillion pt2 but hate everything else, i know others that love sic and hate everything else for the very same reason.

Sure there are exceptions to the rule, just like any but this seems to be quite accurate.

Slipknot are metal, not decent metal but still metal. I do hate the fans though especially the ones who think Joey Jordinson or however you spell it is a better drummer than Neil Peart. Thats freaking blasphemy.

Yes, but metal elitists don't like them because they're popular.

I can understand why you might not like them, and yes, they are a bit commercial, but saying they're not metal is just being stupid.

Is Slipknot Metal? That seems like a simple question but does anyone really know what they mean when they say Metal? Metal is a blanket genre that encompasses many, many subgenres. The subgenre Slipknot falls under is Nu-Metal. In my opinion the absoloute worst subgenre to fall into Metal. So I suppose the answer is:"Yes, in a way."

Metal fans hate slipknot for the sole reason that they're popular.
I used to be into the metal scene pretty heavily and I saw it time and time again; once a band started getting too popular all the "hardcore" people would start to hate it, then opt for some obscure band no one has heard of so they can be super cool and trendy.

I like a lot of "nu-metal" stuff and I don't see why that's an issue.

They're Nu-Metal. Which is basically the lovechild of metal and alt-rock.

What this means practically is that they take a traditionally metal sound and apply it to contemporary rock's song structure. They also tend to emphasize mood and emotion over melody. It also often serves as a "gateway drug" to even harder metal for people who usually only listen to rock.

This can anger some metal fans, who consider it "metal-lite", but frankly I can enjoy it quite a bit. I like the fusion, but regardless, there's nothing even to argue about. That's how it is.

Yes however they are still not good. There is only like 3 songs of theirs I like and none of them involve random screaming.
Me too. I have no respect for the drummer either, whenever he drums live, he's rubbash. He depends on feedback for his songs for the really fast bits.

Slipknot is Nu Metal, which isn't metal, I think it's a form of grunge or something.

no, not anymore i actually used to like them but there new album is absolute garbage and any "metal band" who has a new hit single is pathetic.

Not anymore, they're not. They used to be metal, now they're just weirdos who play instruments while wearing silly masks.
May I direct you in the direction of G.W.A.R.?
Hee hee. I was going to mention that GWAR does the whole costume/mask gimmick far better and manages to make generally better music than Slipknot. Scumdogs unite!

Well that's the dumbest thing i have ever heard. What about lamb of god or meshuggah? I love both those bands and they are both popular. People stop liking bands that have become popular because the band always seems to figure *hey we have lots of money lets stop putting an effort into our music and put out generic shit that our lousy fan base will buy anyway* also known as dragonforce disease.

The issue I run into is that even if you're right and the band starts making shit albums, the hate seems to transfer to the earlier albums as well and thus breeds a general disdain for the whole band - even their early work which the same people condemning the band used to love.

Of course it's metal.

I still hate them though i dont know why they're sound always grated on me but i guess that's because I'm more of a symphonic metal kinda guy.
