They are metal and sadly due to their rise in popularity, change in band members, change in target audience and possibly the change in the record company their music has changed with it. The last song they made which I liked was Psychosocial... Then it just went boring with Dead Memories and the other ones they did so I stopped listening to their new stuff.

Dead Memories and Psychosocial are on the same album. Sulfur's on there too.

They are metal. Personally I only like Volume 3 as an album. Personally I think the members with talent are wasted in the band but that's just me.

Between metal fans I see a lot of controversy surrounding Slipknot and no one seems to be able to agree whether or not the band is metal.

My opinion is that they're more metal than a lot of bands that people seem to obsess about.
Well, they're more metal nowadays yeah. But when they started out, they were Nu-Metal.Which is a sub-genre of Rock. They're more metal than say...Killswitch Engage...or Bullet For My Valentine, you know..the bands Kerrang wanks over.

I'm still a fan of Slipknot and i liked the new single, but its by far not the best on the last album.

My brother always says Slipknot is musical garbage.

This video made me feel the same way.
Explain what's garbage about it?
Well it sounds terrible and the video looks terrible. Though metal isn't my type of music, but then again my brother listens to metal all the time and he still hates Slipknot.
Sounds terrible to you. That doesn't mean it's that way for everyone.

I think metal fans that hate Slipknot are a rarity; I've talked to a lot of metal fans and only a few seem to dislike Slipknot, and strangely, for their lyrical content.
He never said it was a fact that they are terrible. You don't need to say that it's his opinion, he already knows that. There is defending what you like and then there is doing what you do know, which is really imature. I would have understood if he said that slipknot sucks and it's a fact, but he just said HE thinks it sucks. It's really pointless of you to say all the things you do to him.

I don't understand why people thrash each others opinion like that. I listen to slipknot, I listen to plenty of other bands, some metal, some not. I don't get the "purist" metalheads. Yeah, I've started as one, listening older guys how they say everything else besides their own music is bullshit. I grew up, got a broader sense of everything and realized that I shouldn't just shun away everything else. I still think that metal in some ways is superior to other types of music, but it has its downsides too.

Also, how can you people say... I've been into them when I was 14 but I grew up. If anything is worse that listening to bad music, then it's certainly throwing away your roots. It's hypocritical, because you're actually throwing away a part of yourself, your younger self. I still ocasionally put The Prodigy, Linkin Park and that stuff I used to listen as a kid on my playlist. Why not? Why should I have to talk thrash about those bands, the same bands with which I grew up?

Anyway, I'm just irritated with some folks. Listen to your music, don't talk bad about others tastes and it's fine. How can you know that you are right and not the other way around.

some music I listen to:
In Flames,Machinae Supremacy, Frank Klepacki, Hypocrisy, Nine Inch Nails, Demon Hunter, Iced Earth, Dream Theater, Slipknot, Prodigy, Linkin Park, Pendulum, Disturbed, Lacuna Coil, Bee Gees, Celldweller, Apocalyptica, Three Days Grace, Killswitch Engage, As I Lay Dying, All that remains, Rammstein, Byzantine, Dark Tranquility, Arch Enemy, Devin Townsend and Strapping Young Lad, Evergrey, Evanescense, Eluveitie, Faith No More, Godsmack, Lamb Of God. Ill Nino, Ministry, My Dying Bride, Muse, Nickelback, Nile, Trapt, Soil, Soilwork, Pain, Type O Negative, Sabaton, Blind Guardian, Pantera

aaand

DETHKLOK

so to end my rant, you can still admit that you listen to "commercial" bands aside from the standard, yeah-I'm-so-alternative unknown bands. Go Indie if you want to be different :p

I say yes, they're metal. Metal is a wider genre than people may think/realize.

It doesn't mean I think they're good metal, per se, but they do fall under "metal".

Slipknot are Alternative and Nu-Metal! They are along the same lines as Disturbed, KoRn, and System of a Down.
ummm, disturbed is more hard rock, alternative metal. I don't get it why people put them in the nu metal basket. Also, Slipknot is not nu metal, atleast not the last two albums.

Slipknot is nu metal.
Despite the name, nu metal technically isn't considered a subgenre of metal. Glam rock, once again despite the name, is considered a subgenre of metal.

Sorry folks. The non metal classification came from nu metal's roots. It's a blend of grunge and rap, both of which aren't metal. Grunge is essentially alternate rock with "heavy" downtuned guitars. Nu metal is grunge with rap on top.
Being part of the "Nu Metal" generation (i.e. I was between 14-16 at its peak) I always loved the music (personal favs being Korn, hed(p.e.), limp bizkit and skindred) Slipnots musical classification by music journos and those who care nowdays always confuses me - why are they no longer nu metal just because the genre's no longer in vogue; as this post says their metal with elements with hip-hop (i.e. a lil bit of rap vocals and a dj/sampling)... nu metal are nu metal!

Personally given that nu metal isn't really made any more I went the hip-hop direction whilst other mates of mine went metal...

Let's see: it's heavy, thickly distorted, furious and pounding drums (pretty fast at times), shouting vocals... sounds like metal to me, whatever sub-genre you want to tag on to it is probably going to include "metal" in the suffix.

Metal is a good thing. I like metal. I do not like Slipknot. Therefore, no, I do not see Slipknot as worthy of the title "metal", although technically it may be a correct term.

Yes they are. If Motley Crue are metal then Slipknot are definitely metal
They're also one of those bands I'm not a massive fan of but can appreciate, cos for a band on 9 members, they manage to play together live soo well while also having an incredible atmosphere. Even if you hate them, you have to admit that is pure TALENT

Yes, it's metal... more so, it's rather good death metal.
The only problems I have is with their image and lyrics. If only they grew up a little instead of catering to teenage drama (and lose those silly masks), they could even end up as an accepted band in the hardcore metal crowd.
