Opinion: A personal belief or judgment that is not founded on proof or certainty.

So no, it is not the greatest game ever. It is OK for a game to be your favourite, but that does not make it a fact.

No, there are some games I call greater because they had powerful atmosphere and amazing design, then there are others I prefer because I found even more depth in the game play and it allowed for so much... more.

But that doesn't change the fact the Portal is a really awesome game.

It's pretty much flawless in concept, presentation, mechanics, yatatata. And a terrific narrative integrated seamlessly into the game.

It's funny about games-- 3-4 hours for a movie would be considered long. And nobody claims that Psycho (for example) needs more replay value. Portal is what it is. It's a terrific darkly humored puzzle romp for an evening. And when looked at in that light, it's pretty much perfect.

Portal was a few hours of crazy fun. By comparison Dragon Age/Mass Effect have given me hundreds of hours of crazy fun.

So... no. Unless you're one of those people addicted to puzzles, Portal is not even likely to be in your top ten.

It's the most brilliant and flawlessly executed game ever. "Best" is hard to justify, because massive AAA games with multimillion dollar budgets deliver a lot more content, atmosphere, story, etc.

I voted yes anyway.

The poll seems to be missing an option for, "Awesome, but not necessarily the definitive, unsurpassable, ultimate gameplay experience we've ever experienced. Ever."
That's what the "no" option is for
Touché.

While you are technically correct (the best kind of correct!), I didn't feel that the options presented covered a sufficient spectrum of responses.
True, but that's why people respond to the question. The poll presents the four main spectra of opinion (a-c, d-f, etc.) and then you say where you fall into whichever answer you gave (you clicked a-c, so you say "b" in your response). "No, but it was close" wouldn't really be a different answer than just "no", especially because "not even close" (which is heresy) is also an option. "portal 2 looks cool" is kind of irrelevant though.

No.

But only because there is no such thing.

What is the best film ever? The best novel? The best play? The best sculpture? The best TV series?
This statement is false.

Once 2 or more of something in a same category is made ( films, novel, play, sculpture etc...)they can be compared to each other which determines which is better than the other. The fact that there are more than 1 means that undoubtedly one has to be the best and another worst. The best Novel DOES exist, now determining which of all the millions of novels out there is the challenge , but it does exist because comparaison exists (unless they were all made equal but that is not true ) .
They can be compared, but since there exists no objective criteria to rank them, there's no way to determine with is "best".

Person 1: I think A is better than B.
Person 2: I think B is better than A.
Person 3: Who cares? C is better than A or B.

Etc, etc, etc
Well, if someone took the time out to make an objective opinion about everything, which would take a shit load of time! I believe it is possible.

The best is usually determined by the most powerful, while the greatest is decided by popularity and the effect it had on the world.

There are so many little factors, especially with story's and movies. And music is a ***** to explain, depends how much the song/symphony progresses.

Unfortunately, I'm not good at going into detail, so I can't prove it to you :)

"Best" is an opinion, not factual. And therefor subjective, not actually existing.
Therefore, opinions don't exist.

You fail logic forever.

I think people should stay away from extremes like "the BEST GAEM EVAR!!", but the first Portal was very, very, very good. Since the videogame industry has so many different facetts to it, it's impossible to say that one game in one particular genre is the best game ever, but it definitely is one of the most well-made interactive experiences to date.

EDIT:GLARGHAGHA! *frothing at mouth* ONE WEEK TO PORTAL 2!

No. Games that are in my opinion better:

Final Fantasy VI-X
The MGS series
The Timesplitters series
The Civilization series
The Total War series
The Dragon Age series
The Mass Effect series
The Hitman series
The Assassins Creed series
Dynasty Warriors(they're all the same so any of them)
Shinobido: Way of the ninja (redundant title)
Tekken 5
Soul Calibur 4
Vampire: The masquerade
The Castlevania DS games
Pokemon Red and Blue
Elder Scrolls: Oblivion
Fallout: New Vegas
Fallout 3
Shadow of the Colossus
Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver
Digimon World
Bulletstorm
Unreal Tournament 3
Left for Dead 1 & 2
Just Cause 2
MTG: Duels of the planeswalkers
Cossacks 1 and 2
Burnout Paradise
Ridge Racer (PSP)

... I could go on. It was a fun and funny game, I'll probably get portal 2 as well. But it wasn't my favourite.

I think that portal is pretty much perfect however that doesn't mean it's the best game ever.

A cardboard box can be perfect but that doesn't mean it's the best storage device ever.

Shadow of the colossuss is the best game ever, doesn't mean it's perfect, the framerates a tempremental ***** and the controls haven't exactly aged well but it still does much more for me than portal.

Does portal have you killing amazingly huge beasts with only a sword and a bow?
Is portal one of the prime examples of games as art?
Is portal one of the greatest technological achievments of it's console generation?
Is portal one of the most Emotionally moving games ever made?
Does portal have an incredible soundtrack that is put to amazing use? (Does portal even have a soundtrack?)

No, it's nothing more than a perfect cardboard box.

No. A million times no. In fact, when people ask me what the most overrated game ever is, Portal immediately springs to my mind.
