Possible insults from a moron versus possible death. Seems like a no brainer to me.

It's always worth it.

I find it so stupid when I see some moron riding a bike with no helmet, no jacket, and shorts. I secretly pray that the guy has to lay the bike down at some point and rip half the skin off his leg or arm.

My uncle got in an accident on his bike once. He was wearing a helmet and jeans but no jacket so when he hit the asphalt he funked up his hand pretty good. It still doesn't work properly. But he probably would be dead if he hadn't had the helmet on.

So yea... defiantly worth it.

Edit: I just realized we may be talking about bicycles, not motorcycles... oh well, my point still stands.

"Because it makes you look like a fag."
Yeah, I'm really liking his reasoning. I'm sure he was using "fag" as a catch-all term for a stupid or otherwise annoying person, but the rough gist of his actual message was "wearing a bike helmet makes you look like a flaming homosexual".

Because bike helmets are just so fabulous, aren't they? Meh, let him ride his bike without a helmet. He doesn't seem like a very constructive force in society, so his massive head injuries will affect few people bar himself and his unfortunate parents. I'd pity the parents, but this guy's a twat.

To each his own I say.

And besides, that's one way to let natural selection run it's course. Leaves the reproduction to the smart people.

They're too uncomfortable, and considering I'm biking on sidewalks at slow speeds, I don't need to worry too much.
dude, you don't even need to be biking to get f'd up, and please don't ride on sidewalks, i was in japan for about 3 years as a kid, and im walking with my mom to school, this asshole is speeding down the hill comes up shreds my Achilles tendon with his tire, gets back up and keeps riding on like nothin f'n happened. really, don't drive on sidewalks.
Sidewalks are still 1000x safer than streets with regards of being run over. Besides, I'd much rather be hit by a biker than a car.

Yes. I ride motorcycles. I know guys alive only because of their helmets. Anyone that doesn't ride with a real helmet is a moron.

And not those idiotic turtle shell helmets either. The fact is no one lands directly on the crown of their skull, they take a face dive into pavement at 30mph and rip their jaw off. Most wrecks won't be happening when stuff like helmets and leather won't mean anything, so it's worth it to wear a helmet, gloves, boots, jeans, and a jacket. While we're on the subject of safety, it's also a good idea to wear something reflective, and loud pipes don't do a damn thing.

I saw that once, a dude and a chick on a Motorcycle both wearing nothing but bathing suits. I know it's evil, but I was secretly expecting them to get in to an accident. It just seemed so irresponsable.

Bicycles are pretty similar depending on how you ride one.

I think I'm also being a bit stubborn because I get so pissed with how parents bubble-wrap kids these days to keep them from skinning their knees. And, obviously, trying too hard to prove them wrong, but whatever.

Whine at me all you want about how it's unsafe, or wrong, but I don't care. If I get hurt, it's by problem, not yours.
That's kind of how I feel on the matter, I also really hate the bubble-wrapping treatment kids seem to get these days. I grew up in 2 small towns with 4 brothers, so to me it would be unusual for a kid to grew up without experience a couple broken bones or stitches.

For the helmets, With my age mandatory bike helmet laws were just coming around when I was a teenager, always having lived in small towns so grew up without having ever worn one, same as every other kid. I took plenty of cuts, scrapes, bruises, a few stitches, and a couple broken bones, but never actually hurt my head or knew of anyone else that did. So when the laws came into place the cops didn't really care in my town and I didn't want to spend the extra $50-100+ they cost at the time so I never got one. As for today? If I got a bike in the city and planned on riding it in or around traffic I'd get one, but if it's out in the country I'm not going to bother. For the poll I was split on sometimes/usually, but consindering most people live in a city voted usually.

On a similar topic what does piss me off and I'd vote NO on is skiing helmets (note: snowboarding's a bit different). There was that stupid actress that died on the bunny hill or whatever not wearing last year that brought the issue into focus with talks of making helmets mandatory, which I'm really thankfull seems to have died down. I forget who it was and I don't mean to disrespect her I just hated all the media focus, the "Oh no what tragedy a celebrity died, let's focus on and magnify the issue!" I would contend that if the statistics were available you're more likely to save your life by wearing a helmet on the road to the ski hill than you are while actually skiing.

If you're just going for a light stroll on the bike, it's probably not nessecary, but if you're doing anything more than that, you should. I'd be dead right now if I didn't wear a helmet. I'mserious. There have been moments where I accidentally crashed and somehow ended up flying headfirst into the ground. Before my face was smashed, my helmet stopped it. Sure, I hurt my stomach, sure I scraped my elbows, knees, and hands up bad, but at least my face didn't get smashed.

I'm seriously confused on whether this is about motorcycles or bicycles. Who the hell thought it was a good idea to use the same contraction for two vastly different types of locomotion?

For motorcycles, you'd have to be suicidal not to wear a helmet.

For bicycles, it depends on where you live. Here in the Netherlands it's extraordinarily rare to see a 'regular' cyclist wearing a helmet, as there are so many safety precautions concerning cyclists (cycling lanes, separate traffic lights, etc). The only serious cycling-related injury I've ever had was on my left knee (still have the scar), so a helmet wouldn't have done much good anyway.

It can make you look a bit retarded at times, but if you're riding a bike in city settings a helmet is always helpful. I don't bike myself and haven't done so in years, but wearing a bike helmet is almost always worth it, especially if you're one of those freaks and assholes nice people biking on car-roads. If some asshole driver knocks you down, at least there will be a little bit of protection between your skull and the asphalt.

So~... This guy's willing to trade health for Style-points? Judging from his reasoning, there must have been several instances in his life where he could have used that helmet.

On a bicycle no.

On a motorcycle YES.

I don't live a in a big city so the odds of me getting hit by a car on my bike are low. So me falling off my bike would be the same as if I fell down while walking. Therefore, no helmet unless I'm riding a dangerous trail.

I don't and never will wear a helmet, I'm not what you might call a casual Cyclist nor a hardcore one but in 10 years I have yet to hit anything or fall off. Fuck Health and Safety.

Feel free to discuss bike helmets and the percieved fagginess thereof.
Always wear a helmet, I need them so much I get new ones for 1/3 price...

Also, when at school I used to headbutt people who questioned my wearing a helmet, hard. They shut up.
PS, your friend thinks you can look like a cigarette, he's clearly a moron.
