A lot of people don't know when it's appropriate to challenge someone to a melee fight in the first place.

I usually accept these challenges, but only if it makes sense to do so. If there's a hectic battle raging on around us and you run in expecting me to drop everything and melee you, I'm going to shoot you and you'll have deserved it.

I play Gungame on CS:S, where knifing is required to win a game. Its also doubly humiliating as being knifed steals a level from you.

So we often get knifers trying to take down people using guns and doing so successfully.

Edit: knifing a player in a war or scrim is about as humiliating as it gets, often resulting in the player being subbed out.

Good point. Actually, what happened to any sort of etiquette?

I'd like a good gentlemen's duel every now and again in a game.

(Foreword. This is aimed at no one in particular, and especially no one in this thread. I barely read most of this thread (1-2 pages maybe) and am more addressing the general idea of knife-fighting in a First-Person-SHOOTER, and the strange idea of 'knife etiquette')

I've played a many FPS in my time, and every one of them has people wanting to knife fight. CoD4 is the big one i play now and even that does it. It usually happens in matches like search and destroy and so on, when you have 2-4 people left on the map (usually 2) and one person either asks (or more often spams) for a knife fight. I will always say no, if someone runs at me with a knife i'm picking the largest weapon i have to shoot them with.

I play CoD4 because it has guns, i like playing the game with guns, its a very significant part of the game you must admit. Why would i switch to knives? And what really erks me about it is if you say no - or you shoot said charging knife-psycho - you tend to get shouts of 'lame' or 'gay' or 'loser' from said knife-wielding crazy person just because I personally don't want to bring a knife to a gun fight.

Why is it "Knife Etiquette" to use a knife just because someone else wants to? I never understood why knives in a (arguably) gun-centric war-game was so popular with some people. There is little to no skill (certainly not more skill) involved with knives when all you have to do is either A) run around or B) be the first person to hit the button when you get within range, as most knives are not only instant-kill but also instant-hit.

I understand that some people like it, or think its some sort of "challenge" but there it has nothing to do with 'etiquette' and more to do with 'preference'. So really its not that knife etiquette is 'gone' its more that people that want to knife fight aren't getting what they want so other people are 'rude'. I want to shoot you in the face with my assault rifle, where is my gun etiquette? How dare you come at me with a knife inst- you know what, keep charging, its cool, i'm nice like that.

In the end, its fine if you want to use your knife, its fine if you can get someone to knife-fight you, but it has nothing to do with etiquette and if you want to knife-fight me, thats fine, but i'll be using my P90, in the end, i don't care what weapon you use, but i'll be using what i want to use, and what the game is designed around. (And a note to those who say its 'lame' or 'gay' or whatever other witty things you can think up when someone denies you your knife-fight or shoots your face off when you charge them, spamming/insulting after the fact won't make people more likely to knife-fight you in the future.)

Strangely, I did this in COD 2. Now we didn't have any knives, but when you saw someone charging you with a pistol, you charged them back and started a fist fight. Of course this only happened during the time when COD 3 was out, and COD 4 was soon to come out. So only casual guys played.
Also, some people in Battlefield Bad Company and 1943 want a knife battle. And I give it to them!!

Also I'm still waiting for an FPS to use a GunBlade of sorts. Charge at the enemey for a melee kill, then if they respond, shoot 'em. If they don't, slice 'em to pieces.

Ah the options of a GunBlade...

The whole idea of a knife fight is to make a serious FPS more fun. Its relief and I almost always end up laughing in the end. Thats why I likes me a knife fight.

The backstabbing knife ninja agrees with this post.

Whenever i see someone brandish a knife, I know what time it is. I do this alot in CS and CoD4/CoDWaW. I call it "dancing". We circle eachother, knifing and occasionally moving closer to eachother in our circling motion, much like an elegant dance. I call it "Dancing with Knives".

I mainly remember this in CS. Knifing the wall was supposed to mean you wanted a knife fight. But it was risky because sometimes, the other guy would just use the sound to find you and then shoot you, instead of saying no. Or even worse, they knife the wall back, which meant they accepted. And then, they would whip out their guns and shoot you. But knifing was so much fun in that game.

It sounds like a great idea, but it relies on the other player wanting a fair fight, and them not being douchebags

Unfortunately, a large proportion of online people will jump at any unfair advantage, and b)are douchebags

However, there is also this:

The phrase 'don't bring a knife to a gun fight' does spring to mind. Sure, use your knives, maybe even get people to use their knives too, but in no way try to force people to use their knives.

I've not seen a knife fight since Action Quake. Two guys kitted out with bandoliers full of knives. You could throw, slash and of course drop kick.

I do miss playing Action. You haven't lived until you've drop kicked a sniper off a tall building to his death.

There are certainly still knife-only servers on Battlefield 2142, and I've met many players who still abide by this "etiquette", as you put it, on standard servers.
For those who haven't seen this; the knifer doesn't charge at his opponent in attempt to kill, but swings their knife while out of melee range until their opponent switches to the knife too. If someone came at me flailing their knife in an attempt to kill me I would gun them down like anyone else would, or pistol whip them if they failed a backstab and so forth.

I see where you are coming from Neopopulas, and I totally agree with you cooperace27. The whole topic is about the long ago time when games were played more honorably and personally, but over all for the fun. The "Knife Etiquette" as I called it isn't really etiquette I just couldn't think of any other way to put it. It was a way to add more fun into the experience. Whats more fun, winning the round by running around guns ablaze, or in a one on one knife fight?

I don't expect to see it ever happen in games like COD, but in games like CS it is more common than not. As Rednoq said "back in the day I remember everyone knowing that if you heard that amazingly ridiculous knife sound that the one in CS made, especially if you did it by a wall, some one wanted a knife fight.
Shink Shink Shink Shink...Knife time!"

It was simply a way to add some more fun into the game, and no, not everyone would follow it. It wasn't required, they would just simply shoot you if they wanted to and keep running.

You worded it better than I could have, and for that I thank you. *Tips Hat*

You make some solid points here, and I see where your coming from. On the contrary, knives arent meant to take away from the shooter aspect of FPS games, thats not their purpose. Their put in the game for either unexpected close combat or (which i feel this thread is talking about) for players to have fun. For 2 people to meet eye to eye on seperate teams and decide to change it up a little with a knife fight. Its just something that a lot of people find fun in FPS. Now when you get people who curse at you for not knife fighting, thats a little extreme, I agree. Its just a fun little moment for 2 opposing players to have.

Have you never heard the phrase "Those who live by the sword get shot by those who don't"?

On topic... If you want Melee and have a PC, get on TF2 and swing by the Escapist servers on tuesday. Officially it's Melee night, but recently it's been melee/filming night xD Check out the videos over on the thread
