Air, I think. Or water, but i voted air. It's the old tvtropes issue of http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/InverseLawOfUtilityAndLethality as in, yeah maybe air wouldnt be so good in a fight, but screw that, you can run up walls and jump tens of metres at a time! and fly, that's quite cool. Ditto water, but you can't fly. But you can make any shape out of ice, or freeze people amusingly at will.

Then comes fire, it has the fewest practical applications but does look the coolest. Earth is last because although it's cool, in a civilised and policed society it would be the most strongly controlled and feared. you wouldn't be able to kick a rock at someones head in the street, because it would leave a big hole in the pavement. I have actually thought about this during my sadder moments, if there were benders in the modern world, I reckon they'd be registered and quite restricted legally, 'Heroes' style, with earthbenders the most strongly controlled, since they could take a city centre apart in minutes. Such a ridiculously good program.

I'm a sucker for ice magic, so water bending it is for me. Also the healing part is always nice and I like how fluid the movements seem.

Yeah, but most people live on terra firma. Being a waterbender near a river, swamp, or lake would be neat, but it would get hard to fight an earthbender with, say, only your sweat or something.

...Oh yeah. Probably earth or air. No need for some weak-sauce weakness like a new moon or something.

I believe you are mistaken because if you watch the show, there is only one character who ever learns to bend metal and even then, she has to have physical contact with it.

OT: air, because if I get good with it, I can just suffocate everyone who pisses me off. Also I get a bo staff, and the ability to fly with said staff.

EDIT: also the staff has wings that fold out, which is awesome. I'm just not so syced on the whole shaving my head, meditating, and get tattoos everywhere.

Earth. I love that show, I'm so glad THEY NEVER MADE A MOVIE OF IT.

I know right, if there ever was a movie it would be so annoying if they MISPRONOUNCED THE NAMES.

Honstly, earth bending is probably the coolest. I mean what makes you feel more badass than making the earth beneath your feet crack and tremble? Also you get to feel like a jedi, moving objects with your mind and such.

But i have to say that I've always been more partial to controlling the wind. I mean if you can feel the vibrations in the earth to "see" than imagine what you could do with the air! NO ONE is sneaking up on me, EVER. I can tell exactly what you're doing without needing to see you. I could probably hear miles away as well. And if you like blood bending? Imagine me PULLING the air out of your lungs. That's it, you're toast. But honestly it's the increased awareness thing that really gets me.

Fire's kinda iffy for me, because it's not exactly exerting control over something that's already there. The only thing it'd come in handy for would be burning things, unless you already happen to be stuck in the middle of a big forest fire.

The choice between air, earth and water is, for me, pretty difficult though. Water would be incredibly cool, but limited. Air would let you fly, and earth would be probably not as cool, but useful. Actually, you know what? I think I would go with water. I suppose that you could draw it out of the air, if necessary, and it just appeals to me the most.

Although... flight is pretty damned epic...

the one character thing is irrelevant. Its not because shes special , its because she thought about it and concentrated. Similar to the other unique styles of bending such as plant bending, lightning and blood bending. Its thinking of new ways to use your ability.

Good argument, but she also was slightly special, because they already made a point in previous episodes that the best way to contain earth bender was to but them in medal cages, or, for example, prison ships. The whole idea was pretty much any other earthbender would have been completely helpless in the cage they put her in, but she spent the long ride using her ability to finally do what no other bender had ever been able to and escape.

Unless you are in a hot desert there is water everywhere. Chances are you could even pull water out of the earth the earthbender is throwing at you.

A few people in the fire nation could fly using fire. However i see your point.

On Topic: I'm not going to lie, this is the hardest decision i've made for some time, and i will go with air. If you could remove all the air from an area, say the area surrounding an enemy's face, you could do some damage.
