Earth for two reasons.
Firstly, so I can make/easely find gold and gemstones.
I've also been playing alot of minecraft, so It'd be awesome to make my own giant skull cave thing.

A few people in the fire nation could fly using fire. However i see your point.
Oh right, fly by basically shooting rocketfire behind.

I seem to recall the only person ever doing that was Firelord Ozai, and only with the comet. But good point nonetheless.

I'd still go with air, though.

I believe you are mistaken because if you watch the show, there is only one character who ever learns to bend metal and even then, she has to have physical contact with it.
OT: air, because if I get good with it, I can just suffocate everyone who pisses me off. Also I get a bo staff, and the ability to fly with said staff.
the one character thing is irrelevant. Its not because shes special , its because she thought about it and concentrated. Similar to the other unique styles of bending such as plant bending, lightning and blood bending. Its thinking of new ways to use your ability.
Good argument, but she also was slightly special, because they already made a point in previous episodes that the best way to contain earth bender was to but them in medal cages, or, for example, prison ships. The whole idea was pretty much any other earthbender would have been completely helpless in the cage they put her in, but she spent the long ride using her ability to finally do what no other bender had ever been able to and escape.
I never got the impression that she was "special" so much as skilled and dedicated. Perhaps special in her level of devotion and understanding, but not in any way that others couldn't emulate. Learning to sense the metal in the earth seemed to be a crucial part, but she learned to do that due to being blind, it wasn't some magical "you're blind, now you can sense the earth" ability and presumably others could learn to do it too.

OT: I chose water. After the bloodbending (which I would have far fewer qualms over) episode, it's clear that there are very few situations where some water won't be available if you have some ingenuity. It also seems the most versatile, offering solid, liquid, and gas manipulation. Air just gets gas, fire just gets gas (plasma), and earth just gets solid. I also think the Tai Chi for waterbending looks the best (in terms of integration with the effects produced) aside from Toph's ideosyncratic Southern Praying Mantis Kung Fu.

I'm actually surprised by the results - they're in the exact opposite order, thus far, of what I'd choose. Airbending always seemed the most boring part of the show to me and fire seemed to be pretty lacking in utilitarian applications (when all you've got is a hammer...). Earthbending barely loses out to waterbending in my mind due to the phasic versatility and better-integrated martial art aspect of waterbending.

Fire.
More destructive, I guess?
Maybe not... But fire is certainly cooler.

Get it? It is funny because fire is hot.

On a side note, here is the trailer for the movie [http://www.youtube.cf/watch?v=r2N3w69wsmQ].
What movie? That link looked broken to me.

Well you've got to take into account each elements "special" ability.
Fire benders can also bend lighting.
Water benders can also bend blood.
and Earth benders can also bend metal...
Air? Eh.
But in today's society, I think bending metal would be quite beneficial.

Earth. Most "powerful" (in a brute way) and it would be equal most impressive with Fire, in my opinion.

Anyone who hasn't seen the show should definitely give it a try.

If you have to shoot yourself to avoid seeing the movie, however, do so.

I more imagined you had a 1/10 chance of being able to heal(although I am not sure if that power is for females only. The show didn't elaborate on that) or something like that. We only see three firebenders shooting lightning and is even stated that only very powerful firebenders can do it so not everyone who answers "firebending" is going to be able to shoot fire.

Uh, most of the earth is covered in water.
Just saying.

Anyways: I guess fire.
It would really hurt if someone got hit with it. That's always good!
Don't forget air! Fuckloads and fuckloads of air! ;P

OT: I'm gonna go with water, since it seems to be my element, being flowing, smooth and versatile. It's also coupled with my Pokemon style, which is mostly water types.

Water because not only can I control water but also control ice, heal wounds, and physically manipulate people.

You can also just create fire no matter where are you. Man, clearing off the car and driveway would be really easy that way!

All of those are restricted to very powerful benders. Very few fire benders can create lightning (anyone can redirect it). Same for bloodbending. You need to "see with earthbending" (as Toph puts it) to bend metal since you need to be able to sense the impurities of the metal which is what you are actually bending.

I have thought about what extensions Airbending could exist. You can actually do some really interesting torture methods with it. Whether it be increasing the air pressure around a person or sucking the air out of someone's lungs.

"Is good?" That's all you can say for the greatest fantasy creation ever? In my opinion, at least; I freaking love that show. Best show ever.

And before someone asks, no, the movie was not good. Ugh.

Anyway, I would go water. I think that would be best. However, I think based on my personality that I am either fire or air. I'd be okay with those too.

I would love to control water, water is life, but also water can mean death, also, I like ice attacks and the such.

Earth all the way, because it would grant me the ability to chuck rocks at people's heads with my mind.
Also, just think about how cool it would be to go to the beach a and build a kickass sandcastle just by waving your hands around.

I'd come up with so much stuff to do with that kind of power...

Jaun-Jaun was hovering during the comet and Azula did it repeatedly without the comet.

are our natural abilities and aptitudes we are born with not what makes us different than others? Did you ever consider Batman special, even though his only abilities are ones he gained through study and concentration? and what if bending is like the force in star wars and you in fact, are only born with a certain affinity for it? That would explain why the avatar is the only one who can master all four of them.

(in fact, if its a choice, I'd like to change my answer to, "I would want to be the avatar so I don't have to choose")
