I'm a metalhead through and through. My favorite artists include: Dream Theater (with Mike Portnoy), Symphony X, Metallica, Megadeth, Edguy, Disturbed, Avenged Sevenfold, System of a Down, Sonata Artica, and a few more.

I've never really liked it when rap and metal come together. Sevendust kinda did it with their style and I do like them but other "rap-metal" bands like Hollywood Undead just aren't my kind of thing.

I don't like rap, and the only hip-hop artists that I like are Beastie Boys and Will Smith. And with metal, it can never get too heavy for me.

Woah, even Anthrax & Public Enemy?

I prefer metal, but I don't hate rap & hip hop at all. I quite like a lot of 80's rap and the odd bit off hip hop but for the main I just don't really listen to it.
I didn't like that collaboration much. Granted, it was better than most of the other ones floating around at the time, and I liked the symbolism of those two bands coming together, I think it was definitely a good thing because it opened a lot of people's eyes up on both sides of the rap/metal fence to see those two bands work together, but I also think that the original version of Public Enemy's "Bring The Noise" is the superior version. Anthrax get the rhythm all wrong, at least to my ear. Mind you, it was never my favourite track on "Nation Of Millions" anyway. I'm surprised they didn't pick "She Watch Channel Zero" from that album, as the original Public Enemy track samples Slayer and would have made a much smoother rap/metal collaboration, but hey whatevs.

Its metal with me, I used to listen to Rap/Hip-Hop before i admited i had a problem and recoverd. Now i cant stand to be around it, as For metal like all kinds but mostly the more hardcore it is the better, Rap to me has no meaniing its sex/drugs/Hoes,killing cops or white people or both. Metal lyrics have more meaning to me. but thats my two cents.

BTW: i have never understood the lyrical greatnes of " To the window, to the wall till the sweat drops down my balls skeet skeet"

if someone could explain that id love to hear it

I used to be fairly into metal when I was about 14. Five years later, I'd much rather listen to rap. I dunno, I guess I like the funky beats a lot. Also it's a misconception that rap is all about shooting coloured folk, stealing their money and forcing yourself on their harems.
As Scroobius Pip says: "Thou shalt remember that guns, bitches and bling were not part of the four elements, and never will be."

Favorite rap artists: De La Soul, Eminem, Beastie Boys, NWA, Snoop Dogg (ok fine the last two are gangsta) and I'm partial to pretty much everything else.

Just don't go mixing rap and metal. Linkin Park need to fucking die.
Complete opposition to my viewpoint noted.

Moving on...

I prefer Metal because of the sheer raw energy, and because I like the lyrics of the bands I do listen to. Of course it may be stereotypical that Metallica is my favorite, but whatever. Demon Hunter is good. Oddly enough, one of my favorite bands, Breaking Benjamin, is part grunge, part metal, and sadly(lol) a tiny bit emo. I like Linkin Park not because they rap but because they're a decent counterculture rock group that doesn't sink to the level of a lot of what we accept recently. I especially like their newer album. I think a lot of people hate them BECAUSE they didn't say "fuck" until their third album.

Blatant rap opposition coming...

Also it's a misconception that rap is all about shooting coloured folk, stealing their money and forcing yourself on their harems.
Surprising then that no one seems to listen to rap that isn't like this. I have never heard "decent" rap on the street, on the radio, or in my friends' houses. And believe me, I hear a lot of cars in my area blaring rap through their stereos with their windows down, almost as if to say "Yeah I like rap, so fuck you, and not only fuck you, but I'm gonna make yo whole neighborhood listen bout bitchiz n hoes and cappin some pigs!" I apologize, but the last "clean" rap I heard was from the 90's, not counting the "nerd core" that my roommate likes. And it's not good PR for any medium when someone has to personally look HARD to find something in it that's clean. You can't say "Rap isn't like this" when mainstream rap IS like this.

EDIT: BUT that's just my opinion or whatnot, in the grand scheme of things I'm just one guy on a forum that grew up with an asshole drug-dealing brother whose underage live-in girlfriend blared the stuff all day when she babysat me.

Skeet=Jizz/Cum/Semen/Whatever you call it
And I think that verse describes copulating against a window and a wall, respectively, until his testicles perspirate profusely.

I love metal.

I dont like rap, mostly I despise it.

I think there have been research done to prove that rap is some of the "stupidest" music. Metal is a lot smarter (or smarter people listen to it). Too lazy to look it up now though, google it if you dont want to take my word for it :p

This should fit well with the poll tbh. Most people on the escapist seem like above average smartie pants :> And it seems (at least according to the poll so far) the majority of escapistees prefer metal.

Since completing a module at University called African American culture, I've regained my love for late 80s and early 90s rap and hip-hop. NWA and 2 Live Crew were great social observers of their time and genuinely funny. Dizzee Rascal is actually really fucking good too by the way.

Personally, I'm not a metal fan; I lean more towards punk, ska and hardcore. So technically, I prefer rap to metal but I'd much rather listen to NOFX or Sick Of It All than either to be honest.

In terms of Metal and rap coming together? I generally hate it because Nu-metal fucking sucks, although I well enjoyed Limpo Bizkit at last year's Reading Festival. Any band that can casually get women to get their boobs out in public is awesome lol.

Many ska bands have rap-style vocals so I guess that's the closest thing I can think of.

OH WAIT, a lot of Hardcore bands have vocals that border on rapping (Sick Of It All, Hatebreed) which is pretty interesting since Hardcore was an aggressive response to the black rap fans of the 80s who would push around the white kids. Strange how a music scene that promotes unity and equal rights now was built on racism.

In terms of rap and alternative artists gigging together, I saw Rise Against tour with The Flobots a few years ago. That was awesome despite Rise Against ignoring their old songs for their shitty new ones. >.>

Metal's my genre of choice, though I do like some rap. There have even been periods lasting 2-6 weeks where I listened almost exclusively to rap.

Eminem's "Marshall Mathers LP" is my favorite. The beats are catchy, the lyrics are clever and the songs are surprisingly varied. Dr Dre is pretty good too. And let's not forget about Rage Against the Machine - holy fuck, they kick ass. First band I liked. A great example of rap and metal coming together, though it's the only positive example I can think of. Mostly, rap and metal really don't mix.

I hate rap and hiphop with a passion. However, metal also doesn't really appeal to me, because most of the time its just "too much" for my current mood, and i feel like being screamed at while trying to concentrate on something. There ARE however moods, where i do listen to metal, while the same doesn't exist for rap/hiphop.

HOWEVER, turn hiphop into triphop, and the situation reverses: I actually listen frequently to it. To me, this is because with triphop, the focus shifts from the vocals and rythm, towards melody and atmosphere, with the vocals mostly becoming another instrument, and the lyrics something to which you can pay attention if you like, but don't have to.

Metal: MARILYN MOTHERFUCKING MANSON. Uh . . . and that's it :p unless you count Queen as metal. Which would be pretty ridiculous.

Rap: Eminem (on Marshal Mathers, mostly), Masta Artisan (He's pretty underground, but you might know him as the Rap Critic on TGWTG), and Brother Ali.

(The video kinda sucks, but the song is pretty incredible.)

Any genre of music has an equal amount of shit in it. I mainly listen to metal, but I appreciate a good deal of rap (Bone Thugs) as well. As long as it's well made music, I'll at least respect it.

My fav is definietely epic metal (vel Power metal). As for bands, my favorites are Blind Guardian, Hammerfall, Rhapsody of Fire and Sabaton~
But sometimes I listen to hiphop / rap too, if I find one with really good lyrics.
