Poll: Minecraft, a sneaky plot to trap all gamers inside their houses till the end of time.

The biggest problem that I have with playing Minecraft is that I don't have much imagination or drive or ingenuity or free time to really do anything with it.

I see all these amazing things people build in the game, and I just get discouraged because all I've been able to figure out how to build are crappy little box houses.
I usually end up talking myself out of attempting any projects, because I think that I'll never figure out how to build it without making it look like something a five year old would be ashamed of.
Plus I'm kind of stretched for time seeing as how I'm a full-time student, so I don't have a plethora of free time to sink into something I'll likely end up giving up on before I'm even halfway done.

More likely that people who don't like it just don't see the point of the game. And there isn't one.

There is no narrative, no quests, no real pve, no pvp etc. It's just one big sandbox, which is fine and all, but isn't it the developers job to entertain me in the game instead of me having to find some way to not get bored?

The idea behind "one big sandbox" is that you create the fun for yourself.

It would be better if Notch wasn't such a shitty developer. He's still developing the game like a broke-ass indie dev with no fanbase, pushing out untested updates, and then releasing new broken updates instead of fixing the bugs with the old ones.
To quote a friend: "Imagine your car is broken. You take your car to a mechanic, but instead of fixing your car the mechanic installs a big shiny spoiler on the back and returns it to you. That mechanic is Notch."

It's ok. I like to make references even if I don't own it.
The idea that it'll make us never leave our houses seems about as farfetched as one of my friend's theories that it'll steal people's boyfriends...Mincraft? REALLY?

I've been playing a lot of it lately since I've given myself a project. For a long time I would just play it for short amounts of time, exploring caves a little but mostly just tiptoeing around in fear of monsters. Then I got around to turning it onto "Peaceful" and I'm enjoying it much more. I like the exploring and finding stuff much more than the danger aspect.

I followed a single cave system all the way to bedrock. That was immensely satisfying. Now I'm building a home for myself which started out as a hollowed out cave, but ended up with me digging all the way to the surface and stripping out the ground, and now I'm in the process of lining the walls with wood. There's something really satisfying about setting up a tree farm and harvesting it every other day so you can fill in the foundation of your fortress, then taking the occasional trip down your mine-cart roller coaster to pick up some lava or obsidian, and maybe take a few swings in the diamond mine.

That being said, I'm not addicted. I really just play it whenever my internet goes down and I can't do my normal computer activities. It just happens that the internet has been down a lot more often lately.

I almost said it was awesome, but I realize that at least a huge portion of the awesome is other players. So really it's just a very good vehicle for awesome.

I can't really display any of my stuff because it's mostly underground and unfinished because I keep changing projects.

It's taking over a month for a single man to create.

I hate how everyone treats this guy as if he actually did something. All he did was take a 3d model, and used a program (most likely Voxel, but he doesn't say in his video) to convert it into a schematic. He then imported the schematic into minecraft. He didn't actually build any of that.

It's still impressive. And the thumbnail looks like win. We're gamers, we accepted the plot of CoD4&6. We like shiny things.

ALSO ITS THE ENTERPRISE =D

Edit: All those things you say he did still sound like work. And more to the point. Work that no one else had done before.

But it's not impressive. It's like entering a sandcastle competition, and then airlifting in a concrete statue someone else built as your entry.

Edit: Actually it's really easy. I did it with the Normandy from ME. Took me all of like, 20 minutes.

I'm not saying what he has here is awful, but it's being recognized for something it's not.

I started playing it last week. I'm generally enjoying it but I think I'm missing something. Here's how it goes for me:

- digdigdigdigdigdigdigdigdigdigdigdigdig
- hit bedrock
- dig around, hollowing out a huge cavern
- find a couple of bits of redstone, maybe some iron ore, occasionally some coal, diamond approximately once every ten hours of this process
- realise that maybe I don't need to be that deep, go back up the tunnel and repeat the process to no avail

...am I doing something wrong, or are gold and diamond really that rare? What about lapis lazuli, which I've never found?

That said, it's keeping me occupied for hours at a time so I can hardly complain.

We have this on our server. In addition to about 500 golden cock'n'balls (thanks, Yahtzee).

Dig for diamond at Y=6 [hit f3 to find out your coordinates], gold at about the same range, and lapis at Y=19.

Make 1x2 tunnels going off in one direction until you run out of torches, with 3 blocks in between each tunnel. Repeat as necessary.

It just doesn't appeal to me. I don't want to spend my free time building things that no one else will see; I'd rather play through a narrative of some sort and get something out of it.
Agreed, which is the sole reason my current Minecraft game is a Let's Play ^_^

I am addict :3

I'll admit I was starting to get a little bored after I'd explored one world and built like, five different bases on a couple different continents and then connected them all with railways. So I started up a new world and got an awesome starting area. So far I've found two lava falls within walking distance of my spawn point, several (almost) floating islands and a few very cool looking cliff faces that have almost caves on them but then open up at the top to let light in. My interest has been piqued again.

Seriously, I can't be the only person who's completely absorbed with it. I recently had an "oh crap, I've been playing this thing for four hours now". Full props to Notch for doing this by himself!!

Oh yes, feel free to share your "OMG ITS AWESOME" here.
Just wanna say, nothing against the creator, I respect him and he did good work that well works for him

but as for the game, I can't stand it and I think it's being given WAAAAAAY more credit than it deserves

"Well the graphics are cute and charming"
yeah and when Cubivore did it they were called "Lazy" by a lot of people

"Well you get to do whatever you want"
you can do that in Cube 2, which is free, and has guns, and looks better, and has not broken multiplayer

"Well, it's MINECRAFT!"
Umm, so? honestly I've known about it sense like 2003 or '04 I forget, when did the first halo come out? I played it 6 months after that (it was classic though) and you're just finding out about it?

In all honesty I'll give it 8 months after the full release before people start getting bored or become so obsessed they just get gary's mod

ugh...

I put "Meh" as my response, it's not good, not bad... why? because it's not complete, get back to me after the full version is out and I play it for a few hours...

oh

Before anyone else says I hate it because I have "no imagination" or "well you suck at it"
like in the zero puntuation review its joy is actualy having to work to build something awsome i just got it because a friend whos opinion i respect recomended it and i figured why not it looks fun and im completely hooked i mean i made a 50 block high watch tower so i could jus find my one castle the sucky one that i actually finished

PC PowerPlay (An Australian PC gaming mag that I quite like), just gave Minecraft GOTY for 2010. I am in complete agreement.
It also got PCgamer UK's GOTY.

While PCgamer US gave it to BlOps. Douchebags.
