Im wondering what the child actually did as there is no mention..

Actually, there is in the video. He got in trouble at school, and then lied about it. Doesn't deserve a mouthful of hotsauce (poor kid) and a freezing cold shower, that's just brutal.
Hey, rules are rules. In that house, you don't lie to your parents. End of.

Seriously? Rules are rules? Words cannot explain the intense ignorance of your statement.
Her house, her rules. If the boy didn't want a cold shower, he shouldn't have lied.

to say first I'm NOT saying she was right, but that is an interesting way to punish a kid without spanking them since THAT'S CHILD ABUSE! adults need to me more creative. Just not HER kind of creative the *****.

So... if the rules of my house were... if you say, betray my trust, you get locked in the cold, pitch black basement for a day with starving rats... would that also count as "My House, My Rules"?

I must say, I see very... odd, flaws in your logic.

Lately in the news, there's been a number of broadcasts detailing the story of a strict mother in Alaska, who, after discovering that her adopted child had lied to her about an incident about the young boy's school, forced him to hold hot sauce in his mouth for an extended period of time, then forcing him to take a cold shower afterwards, all the while yelling at him about what he had done wrong.
Here's the actual news story:
http://au.news.yahoo.com/latest/a/-/latest/8749128/us-mother-charged-for-hot-sauce-punishment/

The mother was a guest on the Dr Phil show, and upon seeing the footage below, audience members were appalled at the punishment, and Dr Phil's wife even spoke out:

(Edited for embed)

The mother is currently being charged for child abuse, and if found guilty, she may have to have her adopted son transferred back to his home country.

So, Escapists, what are your thoughts on the matter?
The poll is ridiculous. There should be a "that was wrong, but with therapy I am sure the mother could turn around her abusive behavior" option.

You do know that if this kid gets taken away from his mother and put in a foster home he will get a lot worse than hot sauce and a cold shower, right?

What the mother did was horrible, but having her lose her child is way too harsh.

Please add a poll option closer to the midway of the spectrum.

I think there's a difference between disciplining your child in a reasonable manner for bad behaviour and just using the trouble they have caused as an excuse to abuse them so that you can relieve some of that pent-up stress from work, but I guess I'm just a pinko crying-heart liberal for not deifying all parents and allowing them free reins to treat raise their property children however they like.

it's set up, how did they get a camera in there overwise?
If you finished the video, he said that it was her daughter that filmed it.

OT: I think that that's pretty bad...I think if they can set her straight though, and keep an eye on her in the future, she should be allowed the keep her adopted child. Maybe she just didn't know how out of hand she was really taking things, second chances, blah blah blah.

EDIT: 11% think this is ok? The generation of our children will be even more fucked up than we are.
Most of it seems to be coming from the older generation who are saying that kids should get the belt again like their daddies did. The ones that had to walk up hill both ways to AND from school.

This threads needs a good front page updating. Child Services visited and they find nothing wrong with. I guess the boy is one of twins, from the way I read the article, and he seems to be the problem child. Supposedly when she puts him in the cold shower, she's at the end of her rope. And she has either six children with this kid, or six children not including him.

She's treating that child like a Drill Sergeant treats a private.
I don't care if that child is a constant misbehaver or had ADD or anything... this is not something a child should ever be subjected to.
This is certainly not the appropriate way to discipline a young child.

OP: Include an "Other Opinion" option in the poll.

"I see nothing wrong with the situation" - 2

Jeez, are those troll votes or something? That wife has rage problems I reckon.
How is it wrong that I don't see anything wrong with the situation given the information I was presented. The Child did wrong and the mother applied corporal punishment. While opinions on the value of such punishment vary wildly, it has served as an option since people decided to write things down for posterity. Given I have no evidence that this child has suffered permanent physical harm, I am utterly unwilling to offer condemnation. While some might cite "psychological damage", I would simply point out that such a change is the desired result in any training scenario.

By that admission, waterboarding isn't torture. The act is physically, and psychologically intimidating. While it may not be as bad as being whipped, it's still a non constructive form of punishment. I never had any of that, and I'm not running round in a gang, swearing like a sailor or anything. In fact, I don't know any body who did, and you know what? We're all great people.
I assure you, this form of punishment is constructive. It works. Also, something tells me by nature a punishment shouldn't BE enjoyable. Because if it is, it ceases to be an effective punishment. I just realized something, you ACTUALLY compared being forced to taste tobasco sauce to waterboarding. The hell is wrong with you?

Verlander said:
And tobasco may not be hot for you, but different people have different thresholds, especially young children. Tobasco to this child could be like habanero or worse sauce in your mouth for a few minutes, which is pretty unpleasant for a child. This is physically and psychologically harming, both are. I'm not saying don't punish your kids, I'm saying theres a better, more effective way than physically hurting them.
I'm not joking here. I'd be incredibly disappointed if my child found tobasco sauce physically (or psychologically) harmful. What's next, preaching against spanking? My lord people are wusses these days.

Verlander said:
Well I don't know anyone who said that on here, but I don't think that. It would nullify my ow point. She shouldn't be allowed to foster children though
Quite a few people talked about causing the mother rather noteworthy physical harm. At least I saw it while browsing it. These people have serious problems.
And the cold shower?

That's some proper degrading shit right there that shouldn't be done to a child.

The kid lied, and I bet he will think twice the next time he wants to run his mouth. As a parent you cannot be afraid to punish your child, and you should never, ever make a threat if you can't back it up. This woman backed it up.

You just repeated your stupid statement using different words, thus doubling your stupid.

You think that the person in charge can just make any fucking rule they please? If the rule doesn't fit the crime, then the rulemaker is at fault.

And you act as if a 5 year old knows better. He lied because he didn't want to get the cold shower as punishment for getting in trouble at school. He lied because he was AFRAID of his mother. His mother finds out, and pours tabasco sauce on his little face as well as putting him in freezing water. You do realize that can kill him, right? What are you gonna say now? "If he doesn't want to be killed, he shouldn't lie." Is this what your parents brought you up to think?
Well... Yes. He shouldn't do that if he doesn't want to be killed... Wait... How can that kill him? O_O

Man I wish that kid thought like me when I say here face to face with the kid I was like SPIT IT IN HER EYES FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DO IT. Butt still take the child from her custody thats idiotic. Worst part is she isn't even his mother and the whole time was saying "when you live in my house", almost like a threat that if he dosen't like her boots he'll get sent back to his actual family who ( i can't tell from the video) might be living in poverty,
