Im wondering what the child actually did as there is no mention..

Actually, there is in the video. He got in trouble at school, and then lied about it. Doesn't deserve a mouthful of hotsauce (poor kid) and a freezing cold shower, that's just brutal.
Hey, rules are rules. In that house, you don't lie to your parents. End of.

Seriously? Rules are rules? Words cannot explain the intense ignorance of your statement.
Her house, her rules. If the boy didn't want a cold shower, he shouldn't have lied.

You just repeated your stupid statement using different words, thus doubling your stupid.

You think that the person in charge can just make any fucking rule they please? If the rule doesn't fit the crime, then the rulemaker is at fault.

And you act as if a 5 year old knows better. He lied because he didn't want to get the cold shower as punishment for getting in trouble at school. He lied because he was AFRAID of his mother. His mother finds out, and pours tabasco sauce on his little face as well as putting him in freezing water. You do realize that can kill him, right? What are you gonna say now? "If he doesn't want to be killed, he shouldn't lie." Is this what your parents brought you up to think?
Well... Yes. He shouldn't do that if he doesn't want to be killed... Wait... How can that kill him? O_O
Hypothermia. A 5 year old should not be surrounded by cold water. Keep in mind the family lives in Alaska. It's damn cold there. You wouldn't drop a kid into a lake in Alaska, thus you shouldn't give a kid a cold shower in Alaska. It's really not that complex.
i kinda doubt the shower water would be cold enough to give the kid hypothermia. and i would agree with you that killing the kid for lying would be abit extreme. but the kid is fine and have probably endured manny cold showers. (it is quite obvious he's been punished before, since he already knows what's comming.)

how would you punish your kid for lying?
It's very simple. Take what he relies on for entertainment. Ground him, tell him no TV for a week. That will do the trick. If he has further behavioral problems, then he might have ADHD, which is quite common and NOT over-diagnosed. But in most cases grounding will do it.

7 years old and he lives in Alaska, his cold and your cold are two very different things. Taking a cold shower shouldn't be as bad as I don't know, a 7 year old from the states taking a cold shower. Of course he's adopted and Russian so we don't know how long he's lived in Alaska.

Hypothermia? I've tried to find information on cold showers being bad for you and I've fond null. Getting Hypothermia from a Cold Shower is extreme because you're not even submerged in cold water (I'm assuming this is where you got the idea that cold showers can give you hypothermia)and showers aren't long. They take 5 minutes tops and even if you were submerged in freezing water, you would not die.

Cold Showers are in fact, good for you.

How is that a valid punishment?
How isn't it? It's not painful, it's not really a form of torture. It's a mild inconvenience at best. Two swigs of water, taste is gone. In fact, this is probably SAFER than the "wash mouth out with soap" punishment. For the love of Rah, people, it's just Tobasco sauce!

To summarize almost everyone else in this thread: "How DARE she punish her kid in a mildly physically painful way! People like that need to be rounded up and drowned in ammonia!" Kinda sick.
i agree with you. also i would take tobasco sauce over soap anyday. atleast tobasco tastes good.
(not sarcasm btw)

At first I was thinking, "What the fuck is wrong with this woman? How can she possibly think this was a good idea?!"

However, as I read up on this further the child's voice is never brought up. Nobody asks what he thinks of his home, and the Russian Consulate actually visited and said they were good people. Without a doubt the mother is lusting for her 5 minutes of fame, but I don't think the blame is entirely the mother's. There are many things unexplained.

I do not believe she should be convicted, but a fine should definitely be demanded of her. Going from what knowledge I currently have, this is my two cents on the topic.

You can get hypothermia in the rain if you aren't the type who produces a lot of body heat. I once went into shock after plying in the rain as a child during a particularly cold winter because I wasn't wearing a coat. I live in northern Jersey. A cold shower in Alaska for someone his age is not my idea of a smart decision.

if i had the choice as a kid, i would rather take tobasco and a cold shower over no tv for a week. grounding a 5 year old is not really efficient anyways, it would be anoying for you. having the kid sit in his room and sulk for a whole week? no entertainment? have you tried doing NOTHING for a week?

It annoys me that people keep saying that, 'well, they need to be disciplined'. There are so many ways to do it; injuring your kid is not the only option!

*shrug* My parents used to put Tabasco sauce on my tongue to stop me from swearing.
question is.. did it work? : D

i also have a question for everyone saying the mom is in the wrong for doing this: how would you stop your child from lying?
Mostly... until I became old enough to understand the concept of mixed company.
well such a punishment tends to wear of after the years. most punishment a parent gives to a child stops as the child grows up anyways.

also your probably not scarred for life, and can still enjoy spicy food? : p
No it certainly didn't scar me for life, and while I don't particularly care for spicy food I wouldn't cite that as the reason why.

well this would indicate that in your case this worked out pretty good, both for you and your parents. : p

Once again, he lives in Alaska which is a generally cold place, he should be used to the condition. It all depends on the person but from what I've seen, if he was seriously injured or even did get hypothermia it would have stated so.

I should note that taking a cold shower and being in the rain in winter time are two somehow different things.

Ugh, that must really suck. I've mistaken a bottle of tobasco sauce for my glass of water before. It sucks, and I'm way older than this kid. My parents weren't above corporal punishment, and I think I might be a bit better of a person because of it, but damn, never anything like this. He should be seperated from her.

The best way to teach them who is boss is to take a bag and fill it with oranges and beat them up that way it wont show any bruises and you can still show them who is boss.

Isnt that right Peter?

Is that what you're saying? Because that's messed up.
True in a lot of sense, but consider this:

Many parents have gotten done because of physical and emotional abuse. Thousands of children have been BEATEN to death. I myself endured both physical and mental abuse and the scars will never fade.
Yes, what this "mother" has done is cruel and unjust, and i will NOT condone it, but at least it is better then physically smacking him. Amusingly, a parent DOES (in this country) have the right to punish their child as they see fit as long as it does not leave a mark or go to dangerous extremes (such as holding them above a cliff). She wasnt forcing him, though probably would have done. She didnt smack him, and considering many parents still put SOAP in their child's mouth, forcing them to have a mouthful of hotsauce is a hell of a lot better. I bet it wasnt even that bad in terms of spice. Kids dont like even the mildest hotsauce.

Before you lot start, im NOT IN ANY WAY condoning what has been done, but I am saying consider that there are WORSE punishments then this. Personally, I quite like these punishments, well, at least a short dip in a cold shower. They will NOT harm the child, though thanks to her shouting, THAT will.

It's a big deal sure. But there are kids being abused worse everyday and these don't make breaking headlines.

The media at the moment is really filled with stuff like this. And to be honest that's what disgusts me.
yes this is what is boggling my mind here, this is not really that bad of a punishment, and people seem to think we need to get this woman put down. o.o'
