(This argument is over Xbox Live and with some guy I don't know)
So I was talking with my friends about how they liked ODST (Stayed up all night/skipped school just to play it) and they were like "Its awesome" and such. So then I asked the question "How's the story?" and they said "Great!".

But the real "Argument" started when I said
"I saw a review of it online and all it said was that the story just holds the game together."

So then the army dude gets PISSED! Like seriously angry. He yells

"So what, you gonna believe some stupid fucking gaming site? This story is fucking GREAT!"

I just chip in

"I dunno, Bungie isn't known for great stories. Look at almost any other gaming company for that"

So he gets even angrier (Please note, I have no idea he's in the army at this point)

"FUCK YOU! You don't know SHIT about gaming and is probably a twelve year old who's balls haven't dropped!"

So naturally I went for his maturity.

"Wow, cussing and jokes about my age, great, but I'm fifteen and probably more mature then your stupid fanboy ass."

"Ahahaha! Just talk to my commanding officer *****! Thats right. THE FUCKING ARMY!"

"Dude, your commanding officer would be fucking ASHAMED of you for boasting about being in the army in an argument about videogames."

So I ask of you after this long post, was I right to say this?
I for one do not understand why you would bother to argue. I haven't played ODST, mainly because I am mostly an action/rpg type of guy. But neither of you is correct in your assessment because both of you have a clear opinion, probably formulated before the game ever came out. Neither of you can be objective about the situation, so neither of you are "right".

and yes I think he overreacted. but if you were part of the Old Guard of gaming, who paved the way for you, BTW, you would have the same kind of reactions to people attacking what you thought was great gaming. mind you, we old guard folks grew up playing calico and sega, so any storyline in modern gaming kicks the ass of off what we had back then.

I feel you handled yourself fairly well at first, but when you attacked his position in the Army ((if indeed he really is in the Army)) you stepped over a line. Try to stick to the subject and not let it ramble, or you are wasting time. If you cannot put into words why the story sucked, then do not try to convince people that it did.

Shalom

I hope he ends up as a P.O.W.
Because he got mad over a game debate?
No, because he's an incompetent human being that doesn't deserve the life he's been given.
Because he got mad over a game debate?
If I met a person in real life who acted like that, I'd sigh, pull out a switch blade, slash the dude's throat, and walk away.
No you wouldnt. people make statements like that on the internet because the are afraid to do things in real life. or because they are trolling. Im guessing the former mixed with a bit of the latter.

Honestly? You should have just dropped it s soon as he got irrationally angry.
Just drop it!

It's some guy over LIVE who you'll never meet, you gain nothing from the argument (Even if you 'win'), and you end up looking like just as big a douche as him (Even with eloquent responses). Some people are just looking for a fight, verbal or otherwise, and it's always just a better idea to ignore them and drop the subject. Especially over something so trivial as a video game.
No experience with LIVE, but it's my policy to (mostly) not feed the troll. Sometimes I do, for shits and giggles.

Clearly you knew it would make him a sad panda by keep pointing out vices in his favorite series. There are definitely people who have a hard time keeping out their emotions from an ordinary debate, and clearly he is somewhat of a Halo fan.

You knew all that but pressed on anyway and called him a Fanboy. Sure, you exploited his feelings and made yourself sound like the more mature gamer but...

Could you have avoided that simple minded conflict at anytime during the exchange?
This.
Also, OP, you openly admitted that you hadn't played the game.
I'm sorry, but I like Bungie's stories for the most part. I haven't played ODST for myself, but I have just as much foundation to say it was good as you do to say its bad.
I know that if I were in a particularly bad mood, and someone went out of their way to try to make me feel bad, I'd yell at you, too.
Actually, I'd start saying really creepy things and whip out my evil cackle. :)

I doubt he was in the army.

Probably just some guy sitting with his friends in his basement, screwing with people on Live.

Chances are the guy isn't even in the Army.
Grr. Beat me to it. Just because someone is in the military (not saying this guy is) does not mean they are any better than someone else. I scored high enough on the NASDAQ to serve as a submarine nuclear technician, but that doesn't mean I suddenly get 1000000000 argument points.

It's always best to know when to stop, the instant you realize you are arguing with a fanboy, that is when you stop. You didn't. So no, you weren't in the right here. Don't get me wrong, neither was he, but still.

No one wins in fanboy fights

Yes, and you should've said worse.
My Mom thinks that every jerk, thug, creep etc. should be sent into the army and put on the front lines. I sort of agree, they aren't really helping society that much by being idiots in society, but by being idiots in dangerous situations and other people's countries...

We're a nice family! =D

People like the guy he argued with sum up the Halo fanbase, a bunch of idiots.

Only idiots play these games and think the stories are "great".

I know you're kinda joking (I think :p) but still, it'd be a major issue. No wars would be won. Everyone would go AWOL. What's stopping them? You just handed them a weapon and some rations to get started!

More on topic, although I completely agree his commanding officer (if he really is in the military) would be both embarrassed and dissapointed, but you should have just stopped right from the start and said "well, to each his own".

You've been nice.

He chose to represent your country in warfare. Just like he chose to play ODST. The only time you have to be nice to army guys is if your remembering them, If you are outnumbered by them OR if they are bigger than you.
