Poll: No Girls Allowed (I might actually be okay with that, unless the game sucks)

I can't wait to play Brink. It looks awesome, but I was disheartened to hear there will be no playable female characters. As a chick, I prefer my avatars be chicks, but whatever, if the game is as good as I hope it is then it won't matter much. Besides, the developers gave a pretty good reason for why there are no woman. Basically adding another gender would have brung down the quantity and quality of the character customization. What do you think? Would you rather have the option for both genders at the cost of weaker character customization or the greater customization?

Hmmm...

Well, even though I am a guy, I always play as the female mage in RPGs, so yes, I would prefer female characters, but honestly, it is a first person game. I really don't think it matters all that much.

Depends very much on the game. Saints Row or Oblivion, no problem, great to have female characters available. However, games like Uncharted or Alone in the Dark with a set romance inside the game won't really work like that.

EDIT: Oh wow, it's your first ever post too, and it's a decent thread too, I'm impressed. I'm sure you're about to get plenty of 'welcome to the escapist' posts :D

Would say cut the crap, put in some extra work and add the female customization. It's not that hard.

Doesn't really bother me as I always play a guy.

But I'm definetly all for as much character customisation as possible.

I always make myself a female character when I can as well. My logic is that, if i'm going to be looking at some avatar for a good portion of my gaming experience, it might as well be one I can enjoy looking at.

It doesn'r really bother me either. What DOES bother me is this: What happened to all the women on the Ark? Are they all dead? Because if they're not, why in the HELL would they not help the men in the fight against Security/Rebels?
It just doesn't make much sense in canon. But on the other hand, seeing how ugly the men are, it might be for the best that there aren't any women. :p

I don't think it would be too much of a problem. Everybody knows that the first thing to go in a real disaster or apocalypse scenario is women's rights, so all the guys start restraining their women. This is why there are no women soldiers in the world, anywhere. (And before you say otherwise, women in today's military only get non-combat roles)

That kind of sucks, i always play women in games because they're always more badass than the men. They're most likely to wear less clothes too, but that's just one of the reasons!

I would rather have women and weaker customization.

not true!!!!

Here in Canada (my home and native land) woman are allowed in active combat. My friend is serving in Afganistan right now (keep safe) I think she's infantry but not sure. Also, Denmark, Isreal, Finland, France and others as well. Also, womans rights are not the first things squashed in a disaster. In revolutionary France, woman fought along side men and had previously unparralleled equality. It was when order was restored (albeit, in the form of Napoleon) that they reverted back to second class citizens, though he did give them right of inheritance which woman didn't have before.

That's even more sexist then Mass Effect's "Only Lesbian, No Gays" rule.

Seriously, what is this, the fifties?
I thought that was wierd too. They did it in Dragon Age.

I think Brink's aesthetic would work really well on female characters.

Besides, they have less volume, and are therefore less likely to get shot.

The other day I reminded myself that Mass Effect not allowing same sex relationships is understandable if it doesn't offer them to any gender, although unrealistic. And then I learn this.

As a male, in third person games I like the jogging bum which swishes in front of me for hours to be a woman's, call me insecure, so I appreciate choice when it comes to the gender of the avatar. While I understand that if you're telling the story of a particular person it's difficult to reconcile that from an artistic viewpoint with a flexibility that would allow either gender to fill the protagonist-shoes, if you're not then I think the choice should be available.

I always play a dude anyway, since I am one. Usually, he'll be a moustached, skinny, bony-faced, scraggle-haired guy who looks like he's just tired of all this shit.

Like I've said many times, I just don't get on with women.

Plus, in most games where stats change on gender, men usually get a strength bonus while women get agility. For some reason. Maybe game developers thing boobs are full of helium or something?
But yeah, I usually go for a better ability to put sharp things though faces.

It's kind of odd that they wouldn't add women to Brink seeing as the Ark (the setting of Brink) is suposed to be one of the last citys on Earth, so as far as the fiction is concerned that is a little odd. I don't think it is game breaking but it doesn't really ring true either.
