When I first played it back when I was a kid I thought it was one of the most awesome games ever. But I have gone back to it since then and my opinion of it has since shifted downwards but I still think it's a great game that's become overrated over the years - mostly due to nostalgia.

I downloaded it on my Wii a few years back. I never did enjoy it. For some reason, the 3-d Zelda control schemes (Both OoT and Twilight Princess) never did work with me. It felt unnatural every time I played. I ended up quitting inside of the Great Deku Tree.

One of his biggest arguments was; "People always say Ocarina of Time helped push forward the age of 3D-gaming, when in reality Super Mario 64 did that, and not Ocarina of Time."
well unfortunatly he is wrong.

it did push 3d technology by giving better draw ranges, more fluid control and movement, and a multitude of things which are still used today in modern games. it superceeded what SM64 did with the same technology which is to be expected considering the game came out 2 years after SM64...

however what makes it iconic is the fact that it took a massive leap forward in visual technology, control technology, and video game story development. it is one of the first games which was not based on a movie and had a rather decent story line, progression, and involvement which drew the player in and kept them playing for hours.

the game flowed perfect, the controls where flawless and second nature, and the visuals didn't skip a beat. these things made the game look and feel more epic and involved than any other game before it and more than several games after it.

that is why it is considered one of the best games of all time.

Here's the deal; The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is the best scoring game ever, and has been so for more than a decade with it's 97.66% of 100% positive response overall, from different reviews.
I've seen similar list claiming Grand Theft Auto 4 as second place, not GTA 3 which really revolutionized sandbox games but 4....GTA4 was boring...0o

I care less about lists like that, and I claim the original Half-Life as the greatest game of all time.... so meh!

OOT was greatly innovative, but I see nothing but nostalgia behind it claiming it as the greatest.

I don't see what that has to do with anything. Entertaining the notion that quality and effect on industry are the same thing, the idea of 3d gaming had been around for a while with games like doom and wolfenstein, and neither OoT nor Mario64 really helped "push forward" the age of 3D gaming, because it inevitably would've happened anyways.

Anyways, I would not call OoT overrated, because even today it remains awesome. Really only two things in it have dated, the graphics and the combat engine, both of which where top of the line at their time and neither of which are by any means bad. The graphics are self explanatory, N64 graphics, you know. The combat, though still better than some modern games like fable 2, is a bit stiff and simplistic, but with a little bit of tweaking (extra swordplay moves ect. like in TP) it could be up to date and rival most games on the market now.

I'll just list the reasons some of the reasons it's still awesome.
-Big open world, with lots of variety and different environments
-Good story, which was fun and exciting at some points, dark and gritty at others. You enter a world of excitement as an enthusiastic young adventurer, but when you pull out that master sword you jump to the post apocalyptic future that you couldn't prevent and now have to fix. It executes it in such a compelling way that it feels like you're the hero of an epic. Also, it's got one of the most awesome climaxes ever.
-Great level design. Temples where long and had tons of interesting puzzles, mechanics, and enemies. You can not honestly tell me that forest temple didn't fuck with your head.
-Awesome and intense boss fights and sub bosses. Volvagia, Bongo Bongo, Ghoma, Shadow ganon, Dark link, ganondorf, the list goes on. There was not one boss fight in this game that didn't have me on the edge of my seat.
-It's long and has almost no filler aside from those optional side activities like the shooting gallery you can do. There are 3 temples when you're a kid, 7 when you're an adult, plus the ice temple and the well, and those are just the main challenges. Other places in the game such as the lost woods offer additional challenges and playtime, and there are plenty of side quests that yield useful rewards. You can go through the game without ever getting the ice arrows, the bombchus, the Biggoron's sword, ect. But if you want to do the quests to get those things they'll all help in the future.
-Chickens. You know what i'm talking about.
-Almost all the items you get in dungeons can factor into combat somehow.

That's just off the top of my head. Any game from 12 years ago that does all this and still holds up as a great game today deserves all the praise it gets.

Anything that is said to be perfect is by definition overrated, since perfection implies that it, objectively, cannot be improved upon in any way. Regardless how you feel about the designs, plots, dungeons etc. of future 3D Zeldas, it's difficult to convincingly argue that Ocarina of Time has better graphics, better mechanics, better combat and so on. So from that point of view, it's obviously overrated.

From a less pedantic standpoint, I'd still say it's overrated. People say that it's perfect, and yet we have countless people who did not enjoy it, and who hate on it even more because they were told that it would be the gaming equivalent of orgasm, constantly. Nothing could be the gaming equivalent of a 20-hour-long orgasm. Is it good? I would say yes, it is a terrific game, although I would rate Majora's Mask higher. Is it overrated? Nothing could have that kind of acclaim and not be overrated.

Your wording is rather terrible - you aren't sure of why its so popular, asking people ro prove you wrong (?), then claiming it is a great game.

It's not so much overrated as it's kinda out-dated. Yeah it pushed the industry forward as a whole (so did Mario 64, just not as much and in different ways), but, when compared to the newer games, you can tell exactly why people are starting to grumble about it (yes, it's a 5th generation game, it's supposed to have blocky graphics, but it doesn;t stop people from grumbling, etc, etc). It was ahead of its time, but not 2 generations ahead. Maybe half a generation, or even a whole one, but not two.

I must be the only person on the planet that liked no Zelda games (at least OOT, WW and Minnish Cap that I played). They are cute little time-fillers in my opinion, but the super-awesome fantasy world thing? I don't see it. Of course, I did play them recently, but I don't think that matters so much. If I had played OOT on release, I believe my thoughts would be similar, since around that time my gaming was things like Gabriel Knight 2, Fallout 2, The Pandora Directive and Grim Fandango. PC gaming was full of such amazing, well made and complex games, even then, that I think OOT would still seem silly.

Great game, but WW was clearly an improvement. You lying if you say different. Better controls, graphics, combat, more sidequests, more secrets, just better.

Then? fantastic landmark in adventure games as well as 3d games to come. Now? A game with decent progression and story telling but with small muddy environments and boring dungeon design.

Haven't played it - but given how overrated the Mario and Zelda games are, I think I'd probably say yes if I had.

It is in my top ten games of all time probably. I don't believe its overrated... The fact that very few people don't like it as opposed to the enormous masses that do pretty much explains why.

So...basically you're completely discrediting every single story-based 2D game ever made. Not that it's THE best of everything that came before it, but here's a random example:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Express
Not only was that game a story that really requires your involvement and understanding (lest you be caught at a station check, or killed by terrorists on the train) but it was pretty unique. They made up the situation from square one, and it consists of a lot of elements. I'm not saying anything following the "Evil warlord takes over kingdom, must be defeated" thing is so cliche it's boring, but breaking away from trends always seems to make for a more interesting story.

Yeah, I don't mind the game, but I'm with the Overrated crowd.

It is nearly perfect, yes.
If they would remake it in todays graphics, it would be perfect

And the 3D-thing isn't the point, it's the gameplay!
I am gonna have to agree. It's about the a story progression and how the game play added into that imo
